I'm amazed at John Scofield's ability to quote the previous player when trading

This stellar quartet (thank God that Scofield, Lovano, and Stewart are back on tour and recording together) burns down the house on this number. Fantastically tuned-in duets and solos by Sco and Lovano, respectively, followed by a lesson in jazz drumming history by Mr. Stewart (his polyrhythms, press rolls, and that crazy, inimitable hi-hat work!), finishing up with Ben Street's chording on acoustic bass: this is a complete meal...and then some. - Dr. Bob Weathers - Irvine, California

+Dr. Robert Weathers (Dr. Bob) Thanks Bob! That was an unbeliveable night with these brilliant musicians in the beautiful city Wien. You will enjoy this show in LA, I'm sure. Take care friend. Tom

+Tom Kovats Great to meet you, Tom! I can't believe you actually got to see them in Wien. I've been to Munchen and Salzburg decades ago, but sadly never Wien. One day... :) I guess L.A. will have to do with this incredible band! Best to you, Bob

Nice...gotta buy this new Sco CD...him and Lovano make a great pairing - both always swinging their ass off. Great simultaneous improvisations.

I dig BS and the others. Saw them live years ago. Stewart is absolutely wonderful because he has his own style. It must have evolved from the crazy syncopation of Scofield, and Elvin Jones. How can two white guys get so down, dirty, and bluesy?

Bassists...question from a NON-bassist: Wouldn't a walking jazz line be easier if the player used multiple fingers? It seems like the musician here is kinda limited based on how quickly he seems to only move a single finger (or two fingers paired up).

    • @johanhallgren6717

Anthony Ryan Two fingers are used to get a more percussive sound when playing the double bass. You also wear out your fingers quicker if you use one at a time.

Bill is the best in trios and combos drummer, hands down, so listening,
he made the tune, otherwise they would be shorten on musicality support...i mean he he not the Joe's bullshit...(how he survives this days anyway?)

Love Bill Stewart, but I feel sometimes like listening to him play in the last few years is no different than listening 20 years ago. Not much progression in terms of personal repertoire.

jazzants I guess you just gotta appreciate his phrases cuz he's picked what defines his personality...don't fix what ain't broken as they say...that's what Bill sounds like

you mean using it as a comping voice? Listen to Ian Froman talk about comping in contemporary jazz.

Asking why is a great question. That said, I’m not hearing any wasted, unintended nor useless notes, however. He strikes me as someone who means every note played.
