"Lawns" performed by John Scofield Trio Blue Note Milano 21-10-2014 John Scofield - guitar Steve Swallow - bass Bill Stewart - drums www.bluenotemilano.com
No one plays like him. Just been listening to Combo 66 and he's still got it! Hendrix and Holdsworth have been my biggest influences but Sco remains the best in my book! I've had the pleasure of meeting him on 3 occasions too. A great man!
I think what sets Scofield apart from many other contemporay jazz guitarists is his timing; he has an incredible sense of groove. Also his blues bends.
Mr. Scofield turns all the scales into sweet warm bubblegum that stir together so nicely the autumn wind outside does no better with the leaves. Yah as another gentleman in comments said- "his playing is wonderful".
I love this because it sounds like it’s a ballad but it’s also got that country thing going on with it with the guitar and it’s just relaxed. It’s beautiful!
When I first started listening to Scofield’s rendition, I thought ‘He’s playing it too fast; it’s not an uptempo song.’ But I’d forgotten how lush and fat Scofield’s notes are. The way he plays it, takes the song to a whole new dimension. It’s soulful without cheating the song of its essence. Simply amazing! And Swallow’s bass is totally in sync with Scofield’s guitar.😮😮😮😮
Fantastic playing by Bill Stewart. He's really playing for the music, very sensitive drum part that goes perfectly with this tune. And that ride cymbal tone and technique is just excellent!
i believe rosenwinkel popped into his head at 2:25 , a little nod to that classic rosenwinkel lick. scofield is such an endless font of "the flow".total master
great performance. Why does the bass player uses a plectrum instead of 3 fingers? I thought that the plectrum was mostly used in rock. However the sound is good.
+danlovesnan Because, beyond stereotypes and music styles, the use of a plectrum (made of copper) is a trademark of Master bass player Steve Swallows unique sound since the 1970s. He used to play a Fender Precision and constantly refined his sound from then.
to elaborate a bit further, steve swallow was a great jazz upright player who switched to this particular technique decades ago. he is one of the most lyrical and unique voices in jazz.
Did anyone notice that the bassist is playing on some horse-mule bass guitar? No wonder he's able to cover all the bottom notes in a fully rounded way.
I love the black Ibanez AS200, beautiful instrument. Doesn't sound quite as good as his #1 IMHO, but its still a nice looking/sounding instrument. Love Sco's arrangement of this Carla Bley composition also.
I remember watching Steve Swallow on night music hosted by David Sanborn. I thought he was so cool with that bass. Here is playing the same song healing power
Scofield's ability to make every note seem relevant and sincere... god his playing is wonderful.

No podría estar mas de acuerdo. Saludos

Swallow's tone is so unique and cool, especially in a trio setting
This is his wife's composition - Carla Bley

Absolutely beautiful. John Scofield is a national treasure.
A world treasure 😉
Steve Swallow is killing it on this!
Trio magnifico, mi ha sempre emozionato tanto.

His jazz makes a lot of sense
I've known Sco for ages and yet ... his soulful and so inspiring music still gives me the goose bumps !
Great to listen to! Great trio!
Just freakin beautiful and brilliant.
Heavenly voicing ❣
Dio Scofield vi ama tutti !

Beautiful. It sound so full. No keys or comping guitar missing.
A favorite Carla Bley composition.

Brilliant. Recorded at the International Jazzfestival Munster, June 1988
Fantastic, Carla Bley!

Steve's solo is very fine !
rhytm section is absolutely awesome:)
The best there will ever be.
Fantastic playing by Bill Stewart. He's really playing for the music, very sensitive drum part that goes perfectly with this tune. And that ride cymbal tone and technique is just excellent!
i have said several times that i could listen to stewart playing only a ride for hours.
👏
Excellent trio
I'll be going to see John Scofield at the Cadogan Hall tomorrow -16th may 2022 - really looking forward to it...
Scofield tem fraseado muito bonito e refinado
Beautiful
What a beautiful song
So good as a swing! This is a cool version too... @
The Master ❤😊
Beautiful!
Great work!!
I said nobody could touch this delicate song but Carla and Steve, certain not an electric guitarist. Is there anything Sco can’t play? Me thinks not.
Wonderful !!!
Your take on Carla’s tune is so sweet!!!
Que Viva Carla Bley!!
Real classy
Magique!
Genius,...3 misician . ... Gloria CarlA
Very nice job !
i believe rosenwinkel popped into his head at 2:25 , a little nod to that classic rosenwinkel lick. scofield is such an endless font of "the flow".total master
I bet it's the other way around, Kurt emulating Sco...
Great!
Que bienn.Maestros.
a great guitar player robert duvall!!!!
ha!
Unfuckingbelievable
Бесподобно!
HUM!
That subtle tremelo effect is nice and warm then he kicks it off to solo. Kick ass gritty lead tone, but it's still nice and warm.
Just played this tune with a friend and thought we sounded pretty good. then saw this haha. oh Sco…
That little kickdrum, in my universe it is forbidden.....
ja,really smooth...
Good!
very good for the love of make.specal sound for to person and flavor feel.
Unique
맙소사...
parts of this song remind me of Stevie Wonder's: Isn't she lovely.
it remind me "that's the way of the world" at the beginning
Or Joel's 'Just The Way You Are '!
스코필드 선생님, 만수무강하세요.
I feel best from me )

Como se llama este tema?

I see.
to elaborate a bit further, steve swallow was a great jazz upright player who switched to this particular technique decades ago. he is one of the most lyrical and unique voices in jazz.
Because he wants to. It’s his sound.
Also bassists use predominantly 2 fingers..
fantastic how Bill doesn't fall out of rhythm here (4:50)
Scofield’s double time feel at 3:29 in a different time zone in the best way possible
Listen to how clear that ride “ping” is.
Sounds like “tak”.
it s look like Sweet Virignia from the Rolling Stones. but great guitarist
Such imagination. Brother John.
Did anyone notice that the bassist is playing on some horse-mule bass guitar? No wonder he's able to cover all the bottom notes in a fully rounded way.
Jim Hall tradition. And then some.....
I was going to like this song, but didn't want to ruin the 700 likes and 7 dislikes.
Someone did it!! :)
mamm ro carmn
No doubt about his abilities, but I don't like the up speed. The feel of Lawns by Carla Bley is gone.
Un brano della Pianista e Compositrice Carla Bley, attualmente compagna di Steve Swallow, un tempo moglie di Paul Bley.
5 STRING ACUSTIC BASS ON A BLUE NOTE? wtf, perdonatte
Whoever did the sound can’t hear. Drums so down in the mix.
Yes, but are you a drummer?
If so, is that a 16” kick?
never liked this crap and still don't like it even after 35 years playing guitar.
What a dreadful clangy rendition! And it sounds so damn cheesy in 'swing'. I was quite astonished that Swallow was actually on it!
Agree. Completely wrong feel. Misses all the gentle swing and prettiness of the original. John is the wrong man for the job here.
swallow swing a lot with no speed phrase, a big musician and scofield, the incarnation of cool dude playing
this is real "shredding" - intelligent and tasteful art.
I was there ... it was simply fantastic
this like goes to the warm sound of steve bass!
What a great bass solo!
I love the black Ibanez AS200, beautiful instrument. Doesn't sound quite as good as his #1 IMHO, but its still a nice looking/sounding instrument. Love Sco's arrangement of this Carla Bley composition also.
Sticky touch sco… beautiful notes, perfection!
Bravo!
The best of best... This is the life.
Jazz through a Vox amp is the future - love it!
Ho ascoltato questo fantastico trio nella mia città: magia pura ❤️
Che culo ❤❤❤
건강하게..오래오래..늘 그랬듯이..
I remember watching Steve Swallow on night music hosted by David Sanborn. I thought he was so cool with that bass. Here is playing the same song healing power
i love this tune
Steve suono micidiale!!!
There's no words for this fine performance. They are just each others better halves (or thirds)....
What a night... Unforgettable
Have my babies Mr. Scofield
