The 2.0 is still slow, and it won't be the volume seller. 3/4 of Corollas will have the 1.8, and very VERY few will have a 6 speed manual and 2.0 combination. People who want a car with power bought a Mazda 3 or a Elantra Sport.

Manly? LOL, what's womanly about the Corolla? If anything, the Civic, with its ridiculously busy styling, looks like a transformer toy! I much prefer the way the Corolla looks. And the Civic is not 'sportier'; I drove the manual version of each and found the Corolla was actually more engaging to drive. The Civic is only slightly faster if you compare its 1.5L turbo against the Corolla's 2L engine, but I wouldn't touch that turbo anyway because of its oil dilution problem.

I love MotorWeek and John Davis, I really do, but I have to say this was a crap review. Possibly one of your worst. It is like someone drove it that had no experience with the prior generation whatsoever...
You say that it has ample power on the highway, but it runs a 10-second 0 to 60 time and traps in the quarter mile at 79 mph. That's the exact opposite of ample power guys. That's gutless, it's downright shameful.
You say that it has space galore inside, but you failed to mention how much rear seat legroom it lost versus the previous generation.
You say that there is "less of a pinned in cockpit feel" in this generation, but the last generation just had one flat swath of dashboard that wasn't angled towards the driver in the least. Nothing about the last generation had a cockpit feel, it was the cheapest most generic design of all time.
The 1.8l base motor is an embarrassment for Toyota. You say that enhancements have kept it competitive, no they haven't. Other than the Sentra, it has the lowest output and torque in its class.
I'd expect this sort of contradiction and hyperbole on a 1st drive, but this is a full review and road test. Come on MotorWeek, do better.
With that being said, essentially this is the same old Toyota Corolla that we all know and understand. It is a boring sedan for boring people who can't even be bothered to cross shop and test drive the far superior competition. This new Corolla still has a cheap interior, terrible dynamics, is slow and uncompetitive but will be bulletproof reliable and sell by the millions.
