Nine Blades usually plays during combat, specifically to replace the normal combat soundtrack when the player does big dmg to the enemy. It's used to change the feel and tone of combat. Ive sometimes realized the song was playing during combat and just sat there to listen.
Yeah, I started noticing that it starts playing either at big dmg or when we have taken down a couple of enemies and it looks like we are more to be winning. Makes you feel powerful and hyped :D
Actually, Nine Blades starts with some specific combat encounters, in particular the first Goblin/Grove fight, and the fight at Last Light Inn. However, if you start winning, it transitions to Sixteen Strikes, which is a slightly more upbeat "version" of Nine Blades. This happens with a few other songs throughout the game as well.
so also to add some context, while Nine Blades (in 9/8) is playing and you roll a critical hit (the damage from rolled dice is doubled), the song transitions to a track called Sixteen Strikes, meaning you crit so hard the music doubled as well lmao.

In an interview for a bulgarian tv show Slavov said that he wanted to incorporate a lot of the typical odd meter time signatures which are very common in bulgarian traditional music (7/8,11/16,9/8 etc... there's even style that doesn't have a rhythm signature at all xD). Thus creating a feel that something is not "quite normal" in his own words. Good stuff
I love Nine Blades so much, an amazing display of a hero's journey playing out in a song.
As combat music, Nine Blades has the classical emotional motifs that tell a story of a melee througout the piece. There's the initial anticipation, with a sense of danger and anxiety of the clash. Then it picks up into a heroic engagement with the male chorus, a sense of determination and forward momentum. Then the turn-around, a key/rhythm change to show a doubtful moment, which ends into a cresendo of brass. A moment of despair, and the original message of determination repeated in a wistful manner. Finally the salvation, the female lead starting into the near silence in a striking and clear fashion, and hope restored with the male chorus repeating the original theme of determination.

All "combat" music gets looped and interchanged in the game. A DnD round of combat takes "6 seconds" despite people conversing/ or thinking about what they want to do, the narrator/ game master effectively weaves each turn into 6 seconds. Borislav Slavov sought to incorporate this concept into the combat sections of the game, to keep things interesting and drawing in the players attention without them getting bored. Certain pieces of music will shuffle in to replace others when certain events take place, (doing really well/getting critical attacks against enemies, etc) It makes fights feel more dynamic and fluid. They did an outstanding job with the music for this game, and how they use it.
Hands down the best song in the game in my opinion. Especially with several of its sections faded and mixed during combat, not only looping, but reacting to actions and combatants falling. It is one thing to listen to it as a song, but a completely different experience listening to it in combat.
Fun fact, when the song nine blades plays there are 9 allies fighting (your party of 4, another adventuring party of 3, and 2 from inside a grove)
I do so much love how the female voice at 15:40 takes over the position the solo trumpet/coronet/oboe(?) had at 6:13 .
1:49 - There is definitely lightning involved in one of the more memorable battles where this music takes place.

9/8 is such a difficult timing to integrate in this more classical genre, especially since it is also using traditional middle eastern instruments like saz, darbuka and lute. Bravo in marrying all into this masterpiece.

You absolutley have to do "legacy of Bhaal" or the Ketheric thorm theme, unforutnaly I don't think that one is offical but it's a work of pure art.
In general, I want to say how cool the Larians are to include so much music in the game, literally for every event. It's the size of a whole concert. This music plays when your group starts to win in a game, as if to represent that you are fighting as one...
I would seriously pay to watch a concert of the music not gonna lie.

I remember being in an epic fight in the Grymforge area with my boy Astarion and this came up in the background. 🤤 Such a cool gaming moment. Hope you do more of these! My interpretation of Nine Blades links to Wyll's character, coined the 'Blade of Frontiers'. He makes a pact with a half-devil called Mizora who is from one of the Nine Hells. I suppose if a devil from every one of the hells made a pact with someone like Wyll, you'd indeed have Nine Blades by the end. Really interesting to hear how the music lends itself to focus on this number. Great analysis

I'm not sure why it's nine blades. You could have had up to nine companions in your party at launch (two were mutually exclusive but they've changed it so now you can have all ten at once)

As great as the tracks in BG3 are I believe that they are not as good as in Divinity: Original Sin 2. They are by the same composer so you could have a look at them as well.

I love this song, it plays in battles, after you've killed an ennemy or landed a huge critical wich turns the battle in your favor. You really feel it in the song.
