Didn't ask for much as I was pretty content with what they bought us, xbox and nintendo, we may not have had the latest console or phone or anything, but I appreciated that I at least had something. We had a lot of fun outside anyway, riding on our bikes and playing sports or games like hide and seek or guns/cops and robbers, or watch movies with friends/ other kids in the neighbourhood. Also went with the older brother to collect firewood, camping or fishing or played with the nieces , mainly the oldest 1 who was only a few years younger. We didn't spend all the time on our consoles, mainly at night time. Childhood was good, we were in the middle not poor but not rich.

The “globally rich” thing is really crazy to think about because what we consider middle class in the US is like crazy rich in lots of poorer countries. Even what we consider “poor” here, like only having a minimum wage job, is still sooo much more than some people who can’t even afford to buy a toothbrush.

    • @RishabhJainSolutionist

Yeah, the economic class system is relative and not universal. The economic sections of society look pretty similar in all parts of the world www.gapminder.org/dollar-street/matrix . Also, the Rs 10 story is just weird, I belong to an average middle-class family in India (works for an MNC), beggars here usually get furious and curse if you don't give them at least Rs 5. (She probably expected more from Foreigner). The lowest wage in India is around Rs 500 - Rs 800 for a day's labor.

    • @mgr3969

Totally. In my country for example, minimum wage is the equivalent of $200 dollars. Usa's minimum wage is what some with a reaaally nice job earns ($1200 dollars). And no, living expenses are not cheaper, it's actually a lot more expensive because our prices are directly linked to dollar value. Middle class is not s very common thing here

I can relate to so much of these! I grew up in a pretty wealthy family since my dad is/was a well known politician and it was so awkward to realise the amount of things that i thought were normal.
    some examples:
    - I thought every family had a "personal chef", i never saw my dad or mum in the kitchen to cook or bake so it was really weird when i was visiting a friend (i was about 8 or 9 y/o) and complimented the food and his mother was like "that is a family recipe", i seriously thought these things only exist in movies. Looking back that was probably the most stupid thing I thought.
    - when I was like 4 or 5 (really young) I thought that every family has multiple houses/estates in multiple countries and when my (at that time kindergarten best friend) asked me to go on holiday with her family I thought we were going to go to their holiday house (they were not wealthy at all and we didnt even leave the country, I remember being such an asshole and telling my mum very mean things about the family I went with because I was kinda traumatized by the circumstances (I'm not an asshole like that anymore and am very sorry for everything I said and for behaving like some spoiled little beast!))
    - I thought that every house had at least one protective bunker or kind of a safety room in case of a natural disaster or similar things like that.
    - I had a couple of my favourite musicians play at my birthdays, I appreciate artists now a lot more than I did back then and feel like I wasnt really realizing how special that was
    - I didn't know that the "pocket money" concept really existed since I've always (not always but most of the time) just had to ask my parents to buy me something and they did
btw I am in my 20s now and dont live such a wealthy lifestyle anymore, I kinda left that behind when I moved out but I'm well aware that I still am having huge privileges!

My mom cleans peoples houses for about $75 a house depending on the house and person. Some days I would help her and occasionally get paid $15. I always felt a little guilty because that was part of her payment. Also last year or the year before I worked at a pool and got about $110 a week and most of the time gave it to my mom to help us out.
One of my friends is about middle class and asked me if I wanted to go out to eat. (it would've costed about $10) I told her I didn't have any money, so she told me to ask my mom. Little did she know I was referring to my family that I couldn't get money for it in anyway. (Just to make it clear we always have PLENTY of food at home, but that is why we eat at home. We don't waste money outside the house when we don't have to.) Life is starting to get better and my mom signed for a new car today. It is a 2015 jeep (thats all I know because I dont know cars very well) it is super nice and doesnt have a bunch of miles on it. Its going to be the nicest car we've had. We get it next week and I cant wait. Our other van had so many issues that when we drove it I was afraid it would quit. It was also recently wrecked (everyone is okay) but was not driveable anymore. We now will have a vehicle again. We didnt have a vehicle for only 1 week. Thanks to anyone that read this far.😁❤

Hey should probably tell her that the Jeep (made by Chrysler Corp.) is a huge money pit that will break down a lot over time as you put more miles on it. It’s not a good reliable vehicle to have if you wanna save your money. Man, reminds me yesterday I went to a friend's house and their entire house was like bigger than my entire apartment building, literally 1 bathroom was bigger than my bedroom, and every bedroom was the size of my living room and kitchen combined, plus some. I never have seen a house that big before, didn't even know a house COULD be that big. And I am over here sharing a room with my mom while I am 20 years old, while my friends house had like 5 big empty rooms because they just didn't know what else to put in them because they already had like 3 offices, 4 living rooms, two kitchens, and more. Like,, what's the point of even having a house with completely empty rooms???

I grew up very wealthy. So I thought everything that I did in my house, everyone did too. I was homeschooled unlike my 10 other siblings, they went to a private school. So I was around 12 and finally went to middle school. I immediately made 1 friends and hung out. After a month of being there, my friend-let’s call her “Carla”. Carla asked me to come over to her house so we can have a sleep over. I agreed and went home excited. My parents came back at like 10pm and I ran up to them to ask them if they could let me have a sleepover at Carlas house. They were hesitant at first, but soon after 10 minutes of me trying to convince them, they finally agreed. I called my friend and told her my parents agreed. I went upstairs and into my room and packed my clothes for 2 days. I was excited as any 12 year old would be. I went into my bathroom to shower. I was planning it out and something struck me. Where am I going to sleep. I soon relaxed and realized she’ll let me sleep in the guest bedroom. I went to bed. The next day after school we went to to back side of the school and waited for her mom to come pick us up. I wasn’t used to my parents picking me up. I was used to my butler picking me up in the limo. I was fucking confused. I asked her if she had a limo. She looked at me like I was the craziest person and shook her head. “No, why would I?” Now I was fucking lost. I shook it off as my nervousness. But when her mom arrived in her 2000 Chevrolet lumina. I asked if this was hers and she, again, looked at me and said,”yeah. Of course?”. I got in and her mom greeted me,”Sorry for the mess.” I told her it was okay. She asked me for my address. So I told her. She looked at me wide eyed and mouth agape. She asked me if I really lived there and asked if I was messing with her. Obviously I told her no. She sighed and drove. It took about 30 minutes to get there. I used to live in California so these kinda houses were, pretty much huge. I told her to stop and I ran inside my house and told them they could come in for some food or a drink. They came in and they were amused. As the 12 year old I was, I was obviously confused. I brushed it off and ran upstairs to get my suitcase. I told them I got it and we left. When we got to where they lived, I was shook. They lived in a neighborhood and the houses were small. Like fucking tiny. I was raised, if you didn’t have anything nice to say, then don’t fucking say it. So I asked them where I can sleep. They said I could sleep on the couch. I smiled and said sure. So when the clock hit 9:00. It was time to go to sleep. I went into the small bathroom and washed my face took a shower, and brushed my hair and teeth and went off to the couch. Let’s just say i didn’t get a goodnight sleep. I woke up, it was Saturday. I woke up and ran to the kitchen. I was excited, I greeted my cooks name,”hey Rob-“ shit, he wasn’t there. Carlas mother laughed and greeted. She told me to have some cereal. I told her I wasn’t allowed to it. She said then what do we eat. I told her my whole diet. She was surprised. After spending two hours there, and hanging out with Carla and her mom, playing board games. I asked them to sleepover at my house for the rest of the week and wake up on Monday. Her mother agreed and we headed to the house. We arrived and my butler Michael took her car and parked it. They had a nice visit they said and came over often. I learned at age 13 everything and everyone was different. I just had to get used to it.

I had a similar experience. When I was in primary, I thought everyone's house and family were the same. One time we had to do some team homework and we had to decide in what house do it. My parents NEVER let me alone in other people's house so I suggest mine. They told me it's very huge (I still think is really small ) and told me this: "Your bathroom is literally my whole room". I was shook. Then I went to my friend's house. I was so surprised anyone can live in such a tiny place.

She felt so bad that some years later refused to live of her parents money and even got a job after school. She was a nice girl. But no clue what happend to her later because i moved to another city. But i'm 100% sure that she didn't became one of those uppish bitches.
