  • After almost a whole year of on-and-off work, I present to you a rather different take on Hidden In the Sand. (Well ahead of my planned due date too! Neat!)
This video started out as just a quick lil short made for funsies, but then I quickly got carried away lol. This video was basically the main reason I've been radio silent for most of the year. (Along with a lot of important personal life stuff that happened during this vids production)
I couldn't be happier with how this video turned out! This might be my most thorough music video yet! I hope y'all enjoy it as much as I did making it!

The Nightmare Chica is genuinely the most disturbing of the designs, it's uncomfortably smooth and kinda plays into the fear of massive open mouths ready to swallow you into darkness.

Another detail about the eyes: in the beginning where the first animatronic was singing, they had round pupils, typically meaning they weren’t predators, but after it started switching to the other animatronics, the eyes became slits, like a predator cat. I think the most disturbing part about The Hidden Nightmares is that unlike FNaF 4 where the animatronics are still robotic, here they are a lot more... natural. Still extremely unnatural, yes, but they've got the feeling of actual monsters a little kid would imagine. I think at the age the Crying Child was at, it'd be difficult to imagine the animatronics as robots. And also taking into account that a child's mind exaggerates scary things to make them seem scarier, this makes more sense than having 9-foot-tall robots waiting for you to open the door. It's absolutely fucking terrifying.

This animation captures the essence of a nightmare, in that everything goes wrong in every imaginable way possible.

I adore the design work on these... I have no way to describe them other than, in the most flattering way possible, _wretched_ creatures and how Just enough about them feels wrong even when they aren't explicitly distorting themselves.
The way their pupils dilate into squares yet contract into circles. The way they all look distinctly like they have bare flesh rather than fur, feathers or felt. And as an extension of lacking hair, they lack claws of any sort and just have big, thick nail-less fingers and toes.Their mouths don't even lead anywhere as if they only have them to cause suffering.
And then the individual details. Oh man.
Bonnie's gigantic, weight lifting frame that looks like he could rip you in half without using his teeth.
Chica lacking her usual teeth, in fact lacking ANYTHING in her mouth. Just a constant gaping, black void that could swallow you whole just looking at it.
Foxy actually does look and move like an animatronic in the dark, implying he's consciously mimicking the robot to catch people offguard.
The Freddles gaping, toothless maws that look more like a bird's beak than the actual bird, combined with Freddy looking as if he's a living corpse with milky white cataracts in his eyes and a gaunt yet bloated frame.
But what I love about Nightmare is that it doesn't go for the obvious factor of making the mouth the most noticeable part or the motif he draws from. His belly mouth is basically incidental, and his teeth aren't any different from the others. No, Nightmare's strongest trait is his EYES. Because no matter what teeth, fangs or beaks are brought down upon Michael, it will never feel real when he wakes up, because he can wake up and realize very quickly nothing was done to him, and thus the creatures aren't real.
But a set of eyes doesn't need to prove itself alive or physical to feel as if it's watching you. It's why animatronics are unsettling to start with. It's a primary reason why the uncanny valley exists. Something that shouldn't be alive staring at you is one thing... but what if the stare behind those eyes is one of personal, visceral hatred?

0:57 The way Bonnie's eyes dilate and his gums unhinge a bit right before it cuts away is such an underrated detail. Just adds so much to portray how these creatures are just mindless animalistic predators. It's even more disturbing and unnatural cuz it's a RABBIT behaving like a wolf or cat. Absolutely love this animation!

I like the designs compared to the originals for that reason. To a child, these animatronics are viewed as actual animals, hence why they design them more to look like fun, cuddly animals and make them more realistic. So the kid that got his head bitten wouldn’t view in his dream monsters made out of gears and withering, he would view them as organic, living monster animals out to eat him.

    • @3nq838

And it makes it even more interesting when you consider that since bunnies and rabbits are widely deemed "prey" food and their eyes are normally placed on the side of their heads which is a characteristic for a lot of prey animals, Bonnie's eyes are placed in the front and center, something more commonly seen and associated with predators.

Even though its easy to make the Animatronics scary and evil, that isn’t the case. They are children's souls trying to kill their murderer but don’t know exactly who he is. But when dealing with that, it should be noted that (especially as nightmares) its the impact they give you when one of these things is right in front of you. They come off as harmless, but see these things in the dark and/or a traumatic experience, you can see them as feril animals, and that is a terrifyingly creative concept.

The fact he seems to just zip between positions, undergo positions that would literally be impossible for something of his size and gain or lose random pieces of anatomy at will just screams "abomination", even when compared to the other nightmares.
And the complete lack of focus on his stomach mouth makes it oddly more horrific, since you're baducally forced to question it once youve aftually noticed it's there.

The most insane thing to me is how this is built like an actual nightmare, and not like a cartoonish kind of nightmare but a legitimate nightmare where so much happens at once and it's all confusing but dreadful, nothing bad directly happens to you from your POV but you're still in great danger and can feel it.
And not a lot of media can replicate that feeling at all without exaggerating or being over the top! So this is really impressive.

I think this design would've been more than perfect for the actual game itself. The focus on the nightmares was to make them look so scary that it did the opposite instead. I think the gum structure, teeth and eyes along with the clay like shell of the animatronics helped re-create that uncanny valley at a perfect degree that was even better than the original games. It created something that was almost human but something wasn't right, something was off and that's what the first game did with it slowly straying away as time went on. I think it's also a really good animation in general as well too.
