Really enjoying your channel. My piston slap has finally become unbearable and you've given me the confidence to do it myself, tearing into it tomorrow. Hope your channel keeps growing, its awesome
The 4.0L is very easy just take your time, label everything keep everything in the order they came out! Use torque specs for main bearing caps, rod caps, head bolts, oil pump bolts, and the bolt for the camshaft sprocket and you’ll be good buddy!! These things are great to learn on!
Can't say enough good things. Good dude with awesome attitude and your friends are super cool also.. don't even think about changing anything but your vidyas.. great insight and content. Love it!
Love to see a ZJ getting attention. I’ve had 10-12 over the years having two now with a 4.0 and one 5.9. Of all the ones over the years I had one run hot with 4.0 that had Stuck thermostat. The ex wife ram it so hot it stopped then wen it cooled enough to start drove it till it stopped again. I changed the thermostat got her a new car then I drove it another 4-5 years. I’m usually not that lucky. Nice videos buddy now show me a 5.9 ZJ with 249 case swapped to a 231 or 242 so I can see what’s involved in the input shaft matching the 46RE transmission. I hate the AWD can’t do burnouts like I wanna! MOPAR2YA KIDD
The rod bering might look that way because of the block bering journals were rough when it was assembled. The black marks on the bering tells me the block dident have a good bearing journal grind when it was assembled and therefore, oil worked its way into that aera and became blackend which is an indacator that it was a bad grind from the factory. Good job.🤔👍
I had a xj in shop few yrs ago it threw rod 3 the rod bolts were sheared customer did pistons rings rod bearings and way over torqued the rod caps so tight I'm surprised it could turn I think he torqued them to main cap specs it was fixable no windows in the block needed a crank thought
I'm a former Marine and live near you. I recently lost a kid in a car accident. Anyway, I have 2001 xj with a nasty radiator. Looks rusty, runs great 256k miles. Don't overheat. Windows are wacky at times. Goes like a tank.
you can make a mild steel patch and stick weld with cast iron welding rod...you can pre-heat the area before welding and just weld a small amount at a time not letting any area get to hot
Dex in case youre ever wondering if you should drag the camera, were interested! Its crazy how much little things ive learned from you and commenters here. Thanks brother!
That is definitely a hack, I haven't seen you go there. So stop thinking your a hack. I like your idea to put a plate and jb weld, cast iron can be welded with nickel. I've had it done. So... I'd say, disassemble the whole thing and find a welder that can weld cast iron. Then actuality rebuild the motor. It will probably be decent. I'd use it if it was done right. The torque converter is trash. , set it aside for a core charge. Cool video Dex.
Dex, did that ZJ come from Savannah GA area. If so it might have been "done" by the same grandfather and the teenager grandson that "worked on " I got a XJ from years ago. 😮 when I pulled the oil pan it actually had gravel in it. Anything they had touched was scrap metal.
Just got ahold of a 99 ram they’d lost the two big bolts on the bottom to the trans those 7/16ths you showed there the ones that go in from motor side threaded into the trans wound up busting the bell housing on the the nv3500 so they welded it back up put it back in again missing those same bolts lol then sold it when it busted again I brought a spare trans with me limped it home missing those bolts then had to pull the trans out again because my Dakota nv3500 has the shifter about 2” back from where it is on a ram I switched the rear case with the Dakota bell and been running it also slapped those damn bolts in it
Can you tell me does the ZJ have the body ground strap on the back drivers headbolt? If so where does it connect to the body? My 97 has a broken ring terminal and about an 1/8th inch of the braided cable. I bought a new one to replace it but can't find where it would connect to the body. Starting to wonder if the engine was swapped from a XJ which does have the ground strap but the ZJ doesn't and maybe the cable was cut off during the swap.
Hey dex I was wondering if you got a 89 xj with the 4.0 guy put a distributor on it has it 180 off I got it All right and put new injector there was two bad on now it starts and idle good a little high now but when it gets to 1500 rpm it backfires real bad
So wait a minute. That other engine had 298k & you thought they changed it bc of the ignition/key/fuse. But then you show a broken piston & good rod bearings.... So it wasnt good? Or am i mixong them up?
They tried to fix the slap themselves, messed it up, it ran for a few moments then catastrophically failed. They then haphazardly slapped all the bolts back on in the wrong spots, buttoned it up and put oil in it so they could sell it. On another note, in your experience, do you have any advice for a WJ with a Catalyst below efficiency code? It's intermittent and changing the O2 sensor did not solve the problem (That was another whole fiasco just replacing the downstream o2 sensors)
Dex. I been trying to get ahold of you... I need your help with my comanchee. I'm trying to run it stand alone... I need your wiring diagram from a video about 5 months ago on the standalone 4.0
Had a co-worker of the wife bring his jeep to me. 2.5l Wrangler a real mechanic told him the clutch mount was bad, turned out the #4 cylinder grenaded so bad the rod was wedged into the side of the cylinder oil pan was full of lovely aluminum chunks. Whole thing was jammed up, best guess his boy was wheeling it without permission and she had a big ole' drink...
Hey have a good question i have a grand cherokee i bought and we race in a race series called the shit box race with pure insanity in Texas. my problem is i am trying to figure out how to make the transmission shift manually like you can do in the XJs with a AW4. any info would help a shit ton.
My $1,500 truck has more rust but it is actually just around the edges and a few spots in the bed back by the tailgate, and the front fenders are rusted out over the wheels it would look like a different truck with better front fenders honestly and I have a set of plastic fender flares for fixing that but it is not how I want to fix them do you happen to have a decent set of second gen dodge ram gloss black fenders a bit of rust doesn't concern me but the front fenders being rusted out over the wheels makes it hard to keep the inner fender liners in them to protect the inner fenders from Indiana Ohio salt,, and it looks like crap with holes in the front fenders u have the original Ohio title and owners manual, it has fairly decent interior, and i have the factory ignition key with the Rams head cut into the plastic on the key
I think whoever put this jeep grand Cherokee back together then they realize it was junk and just literally put enough bolts in it to slap it back together and unloaded it to the first excuse my language sucker they came by, and started over with another jeep that ran
Really enjoying your channel. My piston slap has finally become unbearable and you've given me the confidence to do it myself, tearing into it tomorrow. Hope your channel keeps growing, its awesome

Good luck on your rebuild brother, don't be intimidated it's just nuts & bolts
28:55 “you did blow up the motor, so congratulations” 😂😂😂
This is the best show on earth
Now we are talking. Ahh what a beauty. I recommend the Orvis package, at least another 15% hp.
Exalant videos, I have a 93 zj it's been a nightmare but I'm still working on it ,
Love the motor hanging in the background just dancing in perfect sinc to the signature Dex elevator music @26:49😂😂
Those exhaust manifolds will crack just from looking at them! 😆
Can't say enough good things. Good dude with awesome attitude and your friends are super cool also.. don't even think about changing anything but your vidyas.. great insight and content. Love it!

where the pistons even put in the right way? great video
Never seen someone with so much Jeep knowledge,
The rod bering might look that way because of the block bering journals were rough when it was assembled.

We’re going to save this block for a rainy day. I respect the heck out of you for that man.
I'm a former Marine and live near you. I recently lost a kid in a car accident. Anyway, I have 2001 xj with a nasty radiator. Looks rusty, runs great 256k miles. Don't overheat. Windows are wacky at times. Goes like a tank.

Yeah man...we with ya! Try one with tractor paint...? Either way we all having fun! Keep turning that wrench...one love
Surprisingly, your fast motion shop music never gets old. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Cool video Dex.
The block is cast steel. Weld a patch plate with a mig welder
That's a great investigator work thanks
I really like what you are doing. Thank you for making a home for all of us who love our XJ's
LOVE These types of videos! Thank you for teaching! I suck at electrical stuff. How to use a volt meter and test light are great!
I took a old distributor shaft and welded a small extension on the shaft and used a drill to build up oil pressure
I need that window washer fluid tank
Like the info u give out.
Have no clue about these.
Somebody obviously took that motor apart seen that it was garbage and just threw it back together good enough to sell it to you
Yeah make this run again that would be sweet to see dex
Dex, did that ZJ come from Savannah GA area. If so it might have been "done" by the same grandfather and the teenager grandson that "worked on " I got a XJ from years ago. 😮 when I pulled the oil pan it actually had gravel in it. Anything they had touched was scrap metal.
Dex. You can make 8 hrs video and damm ill watch them
Love your videos have used you multiple times to fix my Jeep keep up with the wonderful information
Awesome video and what a hack job by the previous owner. Learned alot.
Really enjoyed your content, but would like to see more trail videos please
That hole in the block looks like the Chrysler symbol
Very very interesting video. That’ was some really shotty work done on that poor engine.
Funny how the hole in the block looks like the Pentastar logo cast into the block above it.
"Mechanic" said 4.0s are bulletproof and proceeded to turn the whole engine into a live grenade.
Love the content man, I’m in middle tn and have a painful 86 Comanche and a 2001 xj I’m working on 4x4swapping. You keep me focused on gettin em right
Just got ahold of a 99 ram they’d lost the two big bolts on the bottom to the trans those 7/16ths you showed there the ones that go in from motor side threaded into the trans wound up busting the bell housing on the the nv3500 so they welded it back up put it back in again missing those same bolts lol then sold it when it busted again I brought a spare trans with me limped it home missing those bolts then had to pull the trans out again because my Dakota nv3500 has the shifter about 2” back from where it is on a ram I switched the rear case with the Dakota bell and been running it also slapped those damn bolts in it
Also I know my punctuation is none existent I turn wrenches I don’t write books lol
Love the long format videos. 😊
Unbelievable.... thats has to be the worst engine put together ever. Blows my mind that it turned over at all lol
He was like fake it till you make it
ZJ's where its at!
Man dex I m thinking I'm in the wrong part of the country.

Another Great Vid , Dex you have so much Fun ,I enjoy every one !!! Hey ya ever mess with any Track Hawks ???
I would have removed the rod caps with a torq wrench to see how much York it took to get them off for fun
So that bloke knew what he was doing who you got the Jeep off 🤣😂😅👍🏻🇦🇺.
You do a great job of instruction.
AND THEN SIMS MUSIC LOL THIS IS AWESOME
you could have pulled the oil pan instead of the head too. may be quicker and see a lot of what you need
Hope you didn't pay much for that jeep. Great watching your mind work.
What happens to the door that that needs done? My brothers jeep is like that! Didnt notice it till a year after he bought it
Send it to the scrap pile
Hi Dex, love your vids! Can you give a little advice? I have a 04 WJ 4.0L. Will that motor go into a 99 00 01 XJ? Thanks for all the good vids man!
It won’t fit but I plan on making it one day somehow!! Thank you!
Hey dex I was wondering if you got a 89 xj with the 4.0 guy put a distributor on it has it 180 off I got it All right and put new injector there was two bad on now it starts and idle good a little high now but when it gets to 1500 rpm it backfires real bad
Suggestion, you should build a buggy liberty and full send that ole girl ,😂
Name it lady liberty 🗽
So wait a minute. That other engine had 298k & you thought they changed it bc of the ignition/key/fuse. But then you show a broken piston & good rod bearings....
So it wasnt good? Or am i mixong them up?
I had a 97 xj melt a a rotor button in half. That was weird
Pretty sure that was done by a mechanic that was "methed" up real bad!😂😂😂
Cool a green grip on tools telescoping magnet with the molded powdered grip
Can anyone tell me the best year Cherokee? I'm looking to buy a trial rig. What's DEXs favorite?
They tried to fix the slap themselves, messed it up, it ran for a few moments then catastrophically failed. They then haphazardly slapped all the bolts back on in the wrong spots, buttoned it up and put oil in it so they could sell it.

I love you bro. Thank you so much
Methhead mechanic must have put that thing together 😂
SO YOU FOUND 2 ENGINES THAT WERE BUILT POORLY THE ROD BOLTS WERE NOT TORQUED
Dex. I been trying to get ahold of you... I need your help with my comanchee. I'm trying to run it stand alone... I need your wiring diagram from a video about 5 months ago on the standalone 4.0

It came from cuba
