    My bf and I just finished a trip to Puerto Escondido and Barra de la Cruz. Overall as intermediate surfers we found the localism and waves not worth it in Puerto, unless you’re advanced and willing to surf Zicatela. When it was small, the more chill spots sucked (like La Punta and Carazillilo) cause it was filled with learners getting lessons and all the teachers demanded you to get out of the best spots for them. So you spend ages sitting out there trying to be respectful but not catch much. My bf got told to “go home” many sessions, and even one time he talked back and the guy came up and smacked his board multiple times trying to scare him. We spent 2 months there and would’ve much rather spent that time in Barra. We were expecting way worse localism but it was actually amazing compared. We must’ve got Barra when it wasn’t too big, so the locals weren’t really out or competitive. But it was still head high with overhead sets and so fun. And as a woman, all the guys were super respectful. I was shocked. There was actual surfers etiquette in the water and we all took turns which was a “crazy” concept after surfing in Puerto Escondido. Plus on Sundays in Barra, from 10-12 only women and kids can surf. That was one of the best sessions ever for me to experience. Like Snapper Rocks quality without the people or competition. I cant wait to return to Barra as it was amazing. Thought I’d share that extra info for anyone interested in going, love the vids 🙌

    Yea Dan I was in Mexico 2014 in a American catered for holiday destination and things got pretty expensive. Had to travel to get out and support the local eateries in the next town where it was a bit cheaper.

    April to October is actually the hottest time of the year here - by a lot - but ya, everything else sounds pretty accurate and most definitely south swell season anywhere south of Manzanillo. Occasional big south swell and especially SSW (more west the better) will light up as far north as Vallarta area all the way to Baja, but in general anyone who wants to try summer Mex should should go South. Cheers.

      vallarta gets insane in the summer. like 4 hours/year it turns into pipe

      @@aaron.monson_surfI don't know if you're kidding or not, but for anyone reading the comments, this is exactly true actually. There's on average about 2 hurricanes between Sept and Oct that generate swell that hit some super random beachbreaks just a few minutes north of Vallarta proper, in Nuevo Vallarta (now called Nuevo Nayarit.) They literally work for about 4-6 hours, once or twice a year, incredible Pascquales style barrels, then vanish... And the entire regional coastline turns back into longboarding/ adult learner hell for 90% of the rest of the year. But those 8-12 hours are wild 😂

    When I traveled to a point break as a surf destination, I would train pretty hard to sustain fitness. Lots of padding and not necessarily surfing about a month out from the trip.

    Cartels forcing you to bribe them to surf, the culture in Mexico sure does sound as you say "wicked".

      Finally he's touching on a very important subject of Southern Mexico privatization of waves. The one or two families that have been forcing surfers out of the water and charging hundreds of dollars a day have a plan to privatize all the points to the north of there as well. As long as wealthy gringos continue to pay this will go on😮

    • @barracuda833

      If theyre making money and still get to surf their waves why not? Better than turning the place into another bali.

    • @NadiKyle
      @NadiKyle 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@barracuda833 there's many reasons why- because if you're not making Western dollars you will never be able to afford it and even if you are some people can't afford it. The privatization of nature to sell it back to the highest bidder is a wicked plan. All you will see is Southern California surfers whose daddies are lawyers drinking chilled Gatorade that their surf guides pass them as they run back up the beach after barrel dodging a set wave. It's ridiculous

      I actually surfed China beach (My Khe Beach) in Da Nang in august of 2013. I was lucky enough to be there during a tropical storm and scored some super fun waves. Beach was really peaky, water was clear and warm. There was a woman who owned a coffee shop that rented boards out, she was an interpreter for the GI’s during the war. Anyway that was a decade ago but long story short, there are waves just need a tropical storm or typhoon in the region to score.
