Very interesting. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Amazing...must listen again and again and also meditate as advised, to get the essence of emptiness and know the one eternal oneness in which everything is appearing and disappearing...

@Мария Стефанова I just follow the breath. I used to count my breaths but now I don't count. I'm not very good to be honest and I often find myself thinking about other things. It's quite slow progress but it's good to develop a routine. I can focus for much longer than in the past and am happier in general, I think.
As usual very exciting lecture by Maharaj. In my view Advaita and Prasangika are very similar based on my learning from online classes of Geshe Dorji Damdul. There were three turnings of the wheel of dharma and Buddha targeted different audiences of different capacities in each turning. The second turning had the highest teaching of emptiness on which Madhyamaka/Prasangika is based. Buddha in one of the turnings has said that all the three realms are minds. He also has said in Dashabhumi sutra, “Mind arose from delusion and karma”. So just as sruti pramana is the final authority for Advaitins, the sutras of Buddha's teaching is the final authority for Buddhists. Both chittamatra and Prasangika in conventional analysis say everything is subjective (except for the nuances of reflection in mind vs projection of mind). Chittamatra consider mind as mirror and all objects as reflection in the mind, they deny externality. Prasingaka do not deny externality from the perspective of individual mind but see all objects as projection of mind within conventional analysis. Chittamatra finally take mind as intrinsic existence whereas for prasangika the mind is also empty. As Maharaj mentioned mind is dismantled by prasangika using whole and part analysis, the discerning mind is made of non discerning segments. As Maharaj mentioned Prasagnikas in their meditations still use terms like clear light of the void, dharmakaya etc. Also they talk about non-dual awareness in the ultimate analysis, they say the supreme is seen in the ultimate analysis. Now Prasangikas outside of their practices might not name the reality but I am sure they do not think this realization is like that of a rock, which neither knows itself nor it knows the truth. So when prasangika talk of emptiness in ultimate analysis, it is not just philosophy. The lowest among the buddhist sages, the Arahats, actually experience emptiness (the world and body mind complex disappears). Now experience is probably not the right word as there is no experiencer left in this non dual awareness. So the pure awareness cannot be ruled out. Prasangika first resolve everything to the mind in conventional analysis and then dismantle the mind in ultimate analysis. This technique is used by Gaudapada also in Karika (both waking and dream is combined into dream). Both experienced (object) and experiencer (subject) dismissed, the Self shines in full glory. I found the example of lamp used by Yogacara (Chittamatra school) very very powerful. The only mistake he did was he applied the example to the inert mind. I personally did not find the refutation of self luminosity by using knife example (knife cannot cut itself) or a gymnast cannot stand on his own shoulders at all convincing. Light is subtler than the knife, and knife is gross, there is no comparison. If I say Self is like space, beyond pure and impure and someone comes and refutes it with the logic that water can be pure and impure so Self can also be pure or impure. This makes no sense, comparing something so gross with something beyond subtle does not make sense. The example of dream itself to knock off the intrinsic nature of the individual mind is sufficient as both Chittamatra and Prasangika take mind as an individual mind which is associated with the individual body, this individual mind of a dream body is dismissed on waking up. Their mind is not equivalent of an all encompassing mind of the EkaJivaVada (single mind which itself divides into subject and object, like that of the mind of the person sleeping and dreaming) or the cosmic mind (multiple minds with a shared world as object). Self luminosity cannot apply to the mind as it is inert but definitely applies to the Self, and last but not the least for Advaitins it has sruti pramana. Self is self aware. Advaita does a reasonable job of dismantling the objects but in my view is lacking in techniques to dismantle the mind. Buddhist have quite a few tools to dismantle the mind and can be useful to Advaitins. Chandrakirit’s Madhyamakavatara delves in these techniques to dismantle the mind. Here are some sutras from Madhyamakavatara as reference. For if the Buddha knew the world to be mind only and, on that basis, did engage in the rejection of matter, why then would the Great One proclaim in the same sutra that the mind was born from delusion and karma? 6.88 It is the mind that constructed the vast diversity of both the domain of sentient beings and their universe as well. The Buddha said that all beings are born of karma; there is no karma without the mind. 6.89 While remaining within the truth of the everyday world, all five aggregates known to the world do exist. When we speak of the arising of the gnosis of suchness, then, for the yogi, these five aggregates will be no more. 6.91 So if there is no matter, do not hold that there is mind, and if there is mind, do not hold that there is no matter. In the wisdom sutras the Buddha rejects them equally, but in the Abhidharma he speaks of the existence of both. 6.92
Listened today, though it was there since about 4 months. Wonderful, mind boggling study and summarization , as it appeared to me, who is neither well versed, nor well read, neither religious nor spiritual. Swamiji - Pranaam, Pranaam, Pranaam. Bless me that I may be able to understand your teachings and discourses.
All I know is practicing the slow breathing and saying OM on the exhale, while practicing not thinking, has sometimes allowed me to leave my body. This is a wonderful place of peace and relief from all thought. There is nothing called a thought. Or a me. Great relief.
Sunyam is the term in sanskrit used to represent the "infinity" (from which physical creation begins as big bang) as well as "zero" (from which the number system or mathematics start), both of course after "maya" puts a hypothetical circular border in any region of infinite space. Thus physics and mathematics, the two foundational stones of creation comes out of sunyam
Great discussion. Thank you Swamiji. I am learning every time I listen to you. You have a great knowledge about the topic. Harvard University is honored and grateful to you for enrolling in their department as a student.
The Emptiness of Buddhism is simply the Pure Spirit of Hinduism, Spirit free from objects and phenomena and therefore empty. Thus, the essence of reality is indeed Emptiness or Pure Spirit. In fact, however, Buddhists need to answer some questions that are difficult for them. 1. If there is no self, then for whom does the false idea of self appear or disappear? 2. If there is no self, then who needs to come out of the suffering of Samsara to enter the bliss of Nirvana? Yes, there is indeed an Atman: It is conscious Emptiness itself.
Yes ,yes . Sri Ramakrishna gave example of peeling off onion. Go on peeling the layers one by one at last there will be no matter & then what is there ,He said is-- Chaitanya( Brahman or self) .
1. To the non self 2. There is no samsara or nirvana, its our entrapment into the ignorance of ultimate reality that leads to samsara and freeing from it is nirvana. The very brahman is svabhav shunya. So shunyam or brahman are the ultimate reality empty of all worldy description. Same essence but different naming. This is so far my understanding of vedanta and madhyamaka.
🌹🙏 swamin.... From the lectures I could conclude..... Reaching Advaita state. Hard to reach in the material world. I am convinced i have already passed through the dvaita state..hats off to that school. To realise the state of Advaita bhava or to atleast know of it. I have to practice. Which is very friendly to me is visisht'advaita where I not only feel the intimacy but further get the light to the path shown by sri Sankara who addressed the lord as "bhuddi sakshine...🙏 Swami please guide me.....
Crackin' good lecture. Mmmm mmm the good stuff. The earlies. And the dialectic as it proceeds through the ages. And it's such a heart matter, so meaty and chunky and beefy. Like right in there. And such an expansive view. My, how pretty it is. And thank you many times over Swami. I keep coming back to these lectures many times to clarify. And to learn new perspectives. Many doors to the temple. We are truly blessed to be in the presence, so to speak, of a master scholar monk. But I wonder about that reference letter. What did she exactly say that they had to confiscate and hide it in the archives at Widener? Mwa ha ha ha. LOL.
Namaste Swamiji, thank you so much for this insight, for long i have wondered what exactly Buddhism was, why they needed shunyam ,niravana at all, after listening to you, i also watched the tibetan monk debate that you referred to, and suddenly it clicked that this is the route to Shaolin defence system, and its a way to defend ourselves against the karma of physical violence, ie how to retaliate without incurring karma..i mean who perpatrates the violence on innocent people, not directly but through adharma, ie by unfair means, the ashuras, the cowards who have manipulative minds, so its a mind stunning process, where the attacker's mind itself gets confused and stunned into inaction,"babhayasa mati" but this needs purity of intention, if personal revenge etc is intended then it again goes into karmic cycle,so these mind excercises, through logic, zen, etc.The question is why did Adi Shankaracharya debate them, then? I think likely he debated the fake buddhists who were advocating violence, like his cousin devdutta who shoots a swan.
Actually Buddhism was already at decline at that time in India, because Buddhism became a mess filled with various vamacharas, some negative customs etc. Vedic religion was at rise, Mimansaks (people who believe in th3 authority of Vedas but not the God) defeated many Buddhists, Mimansakas were defeated by Adi Shankarâcharya. Buddhism that time was not the Tibetean Buddhism, it was some different kind of Buddhism
Simply WONDERFUL. A meditative experience ended up with light nothing but light or chaithanya. I don't find all the five are unique that what our tradition narrates about shoonyatha ... Truth is one. It can never convey different for different branches or sects etc., A nice presentation as ever. Swamy started with the light of Shree Ramakrishna and concluded with the same light emanted in all at the end. Jai Shree Ramakrishna
at 1:05:01 swami describes the indivisibility of the atom as it was the lack of sides, the idea of atom is that it is indivisible, that is what the greek word mean, and that is essential for the reasoning he is trying to convey because he is using logic to dissect the literal meaning of it to make a link, which does not fit if we make this "correction"
A great lecture, worth watching several times. amazing work by the swami. Shows the illogical nature of all these five philosophical schools and the greatness of Shankaracharya. If Brahman can not be talked about in words then how can Nagarjuna's fabricated four logical buckets 1:08:15 will disprove Brahman? 1:10:08 Chandrakirti's example of two bales falling together not anywhere in Hinduism, why? That makes perfect sense, it will be a surprise if it was mentioned anywhere, because it is a bogus and mistaken example. It is EXTREMELY rare to get to "Chetan Samadhi". Sri Ramakrishna talks about "Chetan Samadhi" and "Achetan Samadhi - non-conscious Samadhi" just like deep sleep. That is what Chandrakirti is referring to. As Sri Ramakrishna says, one can see the roof from higher steps but it is extremely difficult to step on the roof. 🙏🙏
@@sumitdutta7043 Don't you see? Second reason why teach it ? - to break somebody's pride. This is not spiritual but political, perhaps that is why they were treated. "Clear light of the void" the most illogical combination of words, it can break ChatGPT.🙏🙏
When you spoke of the creepy feeling of blending or mending the waking and dreaming. It made me wonder.. could that be a factor we have yet to explore with say an ilness of the mind such as dementia
Swamiji 🙏. These invaluable talks by our swamiji, are the clear light of the void for people like me ,who could never study in details these things yet get to listen and understand and know. Ever indebted to this channel. Thank you🙏

Having deep gratitude for Swami Sarvapriyananda, who with his brilliance and remarkable goodness, made me return to the enchantment with the path of Sri Ramakrishna, and even the pure and simple faith in my own spirit as part of God. However, once I immersed myself in Sri Ramakrishna's teachings, what stands out most to me is the path of devotion to God. For "the devotee wants to eat sugar, not be the sugar." I think that Swami Sarvapriyananda at some point becomes less close, not because he is no longer wonderful, but rather because the path of devotion is a little far from this fascinating intelligence that swamiji likes so much. But surely he will go on to help many other spiritual aspirants.
What you are saying I correct, but again Swami Vivekananda was "Bhakta Inside and Jnani Outside" so it can happen with there follwers too not to the same extent
@@sumitdutta7043 What seems to me is that in the days when Swami Vivekananda brought his message to the West, he thought, "The language for this time is not devotion. The language of this time is about freedom, about reason, about material progress." combined with peace of mind." He understood that it was necessary to reduce the very disclosure of the figure of Sri Ramakrishna, as he understood that a world that is no longer interested in Jesus would not be touched by Sri Ramakrishna. And so the Vedanta Society has this spirit, of a somewhat restrained devotion. The prevailing idea is: bhakti as a step before jnana, or bhakti as a tool to reach jnana. Thus, we can say that there is a certain "tolerance" towards devotion (in the swamis' speech), in the sense of "understanding people's needs", but that everything is conceived in a way to make it understood that at some point " childhood of devotion" will be overcome by the "maturity of jnana". I understand this way of conceiving things, I understand the reasons (Swami Sarvapriyananda seems preoccupied with talking to secular people of this 21st century, and understands that these people can only be reached with the language of Advaita), but reading Kathamrita, it seems to me that Sri Ramakrishna teaches otherwise. He teaches that "Vedantists" believe in this and that, and that's fine with them, but bhaktas have another way.

Feeling blessed to hear and understand these profound talks. Pranaam Swamiji.
It is our hope that the world can continue to become more peaceful through a shared understanding of our common origin and purpose.
This is a hope. Unfortunately a vain hope.
Great talk Swamiji! I appreciate you and your oratory style. 🕉
Yes, his oratory is amazing.
Amazing...must listen again and again and also meditate as advised, to get the essence of emptiness and know the one eternal oneness in which everything is appearing and disappearing...
i listened again and again. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.
You got it right.
Thank you very very much Swamiji🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Great talk Swami, Thanks!
Love you Swamiji
Absolutely wonderful lecture. My deepest gratitude to you, Swamiji.
Hi do you practice meditation
@Мария Стефанова Yes, I've been meditating every day for 4 years now, slowly increasing the time. At the moment I meditate twice a day for.40 minutes.
Great thanks what practice
Do you have good results
@Мария Стефанова I just follow the breath. I used to count my breaths but now I don't count. I'm not very good to be honest and I often find myself thinking about other things. It's quite slow progress but it's good to develop a routine. I can focus for much longer than in the past and am happier in general, I think.
Absolutely fantastic ❤
Very much inspiring lecture🙏🙏
Beautiful. Thank you Swami.
MY SINCEREST REGARDS AND GRATITUDE TO YOU MAHARAJ ❤❤
For if the Buddha knew the world to be mind only
and, on that basis, did engage in the rejection of matter,
why then would the Great One proclaim in the same sutra
that the mind was born from delusion and karma? 6.88
It is the mind that constructed the vast diversity
of both the domain of sentient beings and their universe as well.
The Buddha said that all beings are born of karma;
there is no karma without the mind. 6.89
While remaining within the truth of the everyday world,
all five aggregates known to the world do exist.
When we speak of the arising of the gnosis of suchness,
then, for the yogi, these five aggregates will be no more. 6.91
So if there is no matter, do not hold that there is mind,
and if there is mind, do not hold that there is no matter.
In the wisdom sutras the Buddha rejects them equally,
but in the Abhidharma he speaks of the existence of both. 6.92
Amazing comment

You do it every night during deep sleep. Only you're not conscious of it.
Thank you for your invaluable explanation.

Great lecture. Enjoyed it
Thank you for this. More clarity abut Buddhism
Marvellous 🙏🏼
Yes ,yes .
Sri Ramakrishna gave example of peeling off onion. Go on peeling the layers one by one at last there will be no matter & then what is there ,He said is-- Chaitanya( Brahman or self) .
Others: Do things exist?
Madhyamaka Buddhist: yes!
Others: Do they exist as they appear?
Madhyamaka Buddhist: No
1. To the non self
No, it's not like that.

Thank u
Thank you!

Spiritually Brilliant
at 1:05:01 swami describes the indivisibility of the atom as it was the lack of sides, the idea of atom is that it is indivisible, that is what the greek word mean, and that is essential for the reasoning he is trying to convey because he is using logic to dissect the literal meaning of it to make a link, which does not fit if we make this "correction"
Great
thank you!!!🙏
Masterpiece
5th school's conclusions were same
@@sumitdutta7043 Don't you see? Second reason why teach it ? - to break somebody's pride. This is not spiritual but political, perhaps that is why they were treated. "Clear light of the void" the most illogical combination of words, it can break ChatGPT.🙏🙏
@@I.Love.Krishna.Jai.Sri.Krishna no… Brahman in direct experience is the Clear Light of the Void is empty like space but is illuminated by Awareness.
Rightly said. Brahman is the one thing which can never be attacked by sunyavaad.
When you spoke of the creepy feeling of blending or mending the waking and dreaming. It made me wonder.. could that be a factor we have yet to explore with say an ilness of the mind such as dementia

Hariom swamiji.
What you are saying I correct, but again
Swami Vivekananda was "Bhakta Inside and Jnani Outside" so it can happen with there follwers too not to the same extent
@@sumitdutta7043 What seems to me is that in the days when Swami Vivekananda brought his message to the West, he thought, "The language for this time is not devotion. The language of this time is about freedom, about reason, about material progress." combined with peace of mind."
He understood that it was necessary to reduce the very disclosure of the figure of Sri Ramakrishna, as he understood that a world that is no longer interested in Jesus would not be touched by Sri Ramakrishna.
Wow, Foreign family is having so much knowledge about our heritage that even Bharatiyas Sanatanis (Indians) would feel shy.
