The New Glasgow Subway Trains

  • I visited Innotrans 2018, where the new train that it scheduled to come to the Glasgow Subway in 2020 was on display, and it seemed rude not to make a quick video about it ...
    The trains will be fully wheelchair accessible (using St Enoch and Govan stations), have 4 cars instead of 3, and you can look right out of the front of them due to a lack of driver!

    Remember please, Geoff, that the Glasgow Subway is a narrower gauge and tunnel diameter than Standard, hence the restricted headroom! Also, since the trains go round in a permanent circle, (i.e. a kind of railway ‘one way’ system), there is no need for a cab at each end!

    Glasgow Subway is already automated, although they have a driver who sits in the cab, gets things going and can drive if needed. Interesting that they're planning for potentially keeping that arrangement if need be. I was surprised when you said 4 cars, as the platforms are quite tight for the 3 cars, but the short middle carriages and the walkthrough train mean that you'll get a lot more space without having to rebuild the line (again) which is fantastic! I think they look cracking.

      Yes, ATO is in use on the Subway, which is a form of automation. Manual intervention is of course required,but the trains usually do drive themselves between stations.

Its good that they are phasing out the drivers as the trains can now be computer controlled. So the Glasgow subway currently uses ATO similar to the Victoria, Central, Jubilee lines etc.
    Driver starts the train in motion, it drives to the next stop, driver opens the doors and monitors boarding and alighting. Then driver closes the doors and sets the train again.
    The new trains will have drivers initially but, as I understand it, drivers will be phased out and PEDs will be installed.
    That's what I've heard anyway.

      They'll probably get the Subways old stock, assuming the bogies can be adapted to standard gauge. Either that or some '92 stock (For the love of the Gods, *please*!!! :-) once TfL decides to cascade it down!
      The only reason for LUL stock on the IoW is because of the tunnel south of Ryde St. John's Road. To this day I'm still surprised they havn't either re-gauged it or built a standard bore tunnel to replace it! :-o

    My understanding is that they're retaining having the driver at the front in a partitioned cab until the platform screen doors are installed- that's the reason for having the "temporary" cab, as it's felt it's safer that way?

      There are 2 types of driverless train. UTO(unattended train operation) trains are designed to be left unattended, can automatically perform all duties, including operating doors and even handling emergencies are automated too. DTO(driverless train operation) in other hand, a staff on board is required to operate doors and manual override in case of emergencies.

    Hi Geoff, I think it would be good to cover why underground trains are so loud, I was on the central line yesterday and its ear splitting, why are some lines ok and others painfully loud?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's just down to the age and speed of the line, the Central is one of the fastest lines yet it's tunnels date back to the 1900s so weren't built with as much noise cancelling equipment, so is very loud compared with the Victoria which runs at similar speeds yet it's tunnels were built 60 years later

    • @SimonS44
      @SimonS44 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depending what causes the noise it can also be because the Central Line is quite curvy

      National rail trains are quieter though. I feel tube trains aren't as well sound insulated as modern commuter trains. I noticed that I had bad hayfever this May and on the S stock, I coughed a lot but on the Class 700 or 350, I didn't, so these trains must also have air filters and stuff on them for cleaner air.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete S. That’s because tunnels echo sound a lot, especially the deep level tube. The S stock may be due to the air in the surrounding tunnels as they all have the same sort of air conditioning, or simply the passengers around you!

    • @PeteS_1994
      @PeteS_1994 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alasdair Clift I disagree about the passengers. I had bad hay fever so had an itchy throat but I even noticed that on a London overground my allergies weren’t as bad as on a 1972 stock or S stock but worse than on a Class 700, the train must have HEPA filters or something. I feel I only noticed the air quality cause of my allergies. I think you are partially true but even a class 350 compared to a 319 is much quieter. I think though commuter trains are built with comfort in mind hence they would be more soundproofed than a tube train.

    • @benedictdesilva6677
      @benedictdesilva6677 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Glasgow subway, built 122 years ago, specifies that the height of the train be 2.65 meters from the rails upward. The height of the cabin floor was specified to be (at platform height) 0.70 meters. This leaves just 1.95 meters (6 ft and 4 inches) space from the cabin floor to the outside top of the train.
      And you call this a "design flaw" - Oh dear me !
