    Thank you for the information. I live in Southwest Florida. I already have ridge vent and soffit but considering installing solar-powered attic fan. What's your thoughts?

    Here is a suggestion -
    Sink a good well.
    Tie that into a pump and irrigation tubing.
    Run tubing along the ridge.
    Set a timer to run so many minutes at a time.
    Water running down the roof will draw out massive amounts of heat.
    You can reclaim that water too in order to use it to water your property.
    That well water is generally around 50 degrees compared to the 150 degree roof.

    My vents are all fucked up, pretty sure it’s around 200 Fahrenheit up there during the peak hours.

    This explains why my Foam insulation contractor wants me to add some ceiling vents. The foam will be on my roof rafters. I now understand vents in my ceiling will make heat rise store in attic due to attic seal in foam then once that air cools it will fall back into house. Do I understand that right ?

    • @RetroFoamofMichigan
      @RetroFoamofMichigan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, when you seal the attic roof deck air will circulate through that space.

    This may seem like bonkers .. but I have an old home likely built in the 1930’s and there’s no soffits or vents .. just blown in insulation on the floor . When I had the inspection done the inspector said I wouldn’t need any additional vents as older houses Breath naturally .. I have Since put on a steel roof .. and this summer the house is super hot .. what would you suggest ??
    Thank you

    • @RetroFoamofMichigan
      @RetroFoamofMichigan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since it's an older home, there is a good chance there is air leakage in the walls, crawl space/basement, and attic. Adding insulation to those areas will help.

    What do I need to do to my ac unit if it has a gas furnace and Attic is NOT VENTED spray foamed roof?

      What issue are you trying to resolve? Do you have a hot attic?

      @@RetroFoamofMichigan my attic has spray foam on the roof and NOT vented. I have a gas furnace. Do I need to add some type of air intake to my hvac unit? Do I need a dehumidifier? I’m afraid of a gas leak.

    • @RetroFoamofMichigan
      @RetroFoamofMichigan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking, it is recommended to have a fresh air intake.
      All gas appliances should be properly vented. Best to have a heating and cooling company check it if you're concerned.
      Before you add a dehumidifier, I would recommend running your bathroom fan (that should exhaust directly outside) periodically throughout the day.

  • @crazysquirrel9425
    @crazysquirrel9425 ปีที่แล้ว

    I want vents that automatically open MECHANICALLY (not electrically) and close mechanically (automatically).
    I want them CLOSED in the dead of winter. Tired of heating the roof and the outside because of venting.

    What if I have insulation on my roof rafters and the floor?

    • @RetroFoamofMichigan
      @RetroFoamofMichigan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what kind of insulation you have. If it's fiberglass or cellulose, those materials still allow for air movement through them.

      We recommend one or the other. Spray foam creates an air seal, so the fiberglass isn't needed.

    So how hot is too hot? 120 F?

    • @RetroFoamofMichigan
      @RetroFoamofMichigan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great question! Some of our Spray Forman can run into Attic temperatures up to 150 degrees! The average temp for an attic is anywhere between 130-150 depending on the outside conditions. Anything above 150 would be considered too hot!

    • @markchristensen5206
      @markchristensen5206 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-zi2ue5nz4x that kind of tempeture, , +120°, is probably heating the interior of your home, plus it's shortening the life of your roof. It would be in your best interests, if you can exhaust that heat. Quiet cool makes a fantastic gable fan, the green model, 3.0, is very cost efficient, and you can control it with your phone. I'd also look at the amount of insulation in the attic, I currently have 2 of those fans and R 76, insulation in the attic. We don't have air conditioning. House gets up 70° on a 115° day. One more thing we also have a whole house fan.

    • @crazysquirrel9425

      @@markchristensen5206 drat. I thought that gable fan would be a good thing. Apparently not.
      Anything that you can control with your phone will require electronics which are unreliable to say the least.

      ..to get around the “electronics in a hot attic” issue ..the main power to the fan just needs to be to the motor ..the sub control to the fan(s) needs to be in the living space ..or somewhere away from the heated attic ..

      To insulate your attic, I would recommend spraying foam on the floor and making sure it is vented.
