Fellow trans man from Virginia Beach! I know it's rough, but it gets better. Most people at ODU were pretty cool, and the lab I work at now is great. Part of my job is urinalysis for military contractors so I'm on the bases all the time and even most super conservative military personnel have enough decency to at least wait until I'm gone before they start talking shit about me. Unfortunately, the trend I've noticed is people are (at least in public) more accepting of trans adults. It's some bullshit, but people here in Virginia are mostly polite to adult strangers but have no problem telling a teen that they don't know how to live. You'll make it, brother. Hang in there. ❤️

I don’t think a text message about this would be at all appropriate. It can very well come across to your parents and family as very childish. You want them to believe that you know who you are and telling them by way of texting would show them you are not even grown up enough to tell them in person. Therefore how can you even be able to make such a decision about your life if you cannot even talk to them and stand up for who you are. I’m not being an asshole, I promise. I am just telling you from an older adults position. I am also Trans FTM. I understand how horribly scary it is to speak about this to your parents when you have no idea how they are going to react. Idk how old you are and idk if you are fully or mostly dependent on your parents. This can give them the upper hand because they have a lot of control over your life if you are dependent on them financially, and if you are not legally an adult yet. So I would suggest definitely feeling them out first. That way you have room to decide what you will do before you tell them about yourself. I know that not all parents that are against LGBTQ+ would do anything drastic to you over it. But some do. And if you are under 18 and have no way of being able to support yourself if they were to react very badly and need to leave then you need to be very careful about this. I hope that you know something about your parents demeanor enough that you would know how they have reacted to other things in the past. Only you can know and can consider these things. Please be very careful. It can and is very scary when you are in this position. I know. I’ve been there. There were conversion camps when I was growing up. I don’t think they are around anymore but there can be things that they can still do to make life almost unbearable if they so choice if they react badly. Have a real plan if the react badly. Again, if you are dependent on them and have no way of surviving on your own if you are an adult, think about that very carefully. If you are under age consider it even more becomes they have legal rights over you. You can’t just leave them because they can legally get you back. So first be independent or have a solid backup plan. The last thing you want is to be on the streets. I’m sorry if this sounds too negative to you. But when we are emotional about this, which is natural, we sometimes do not think clearly about all the ways this can go wrong. So know your options if it does and have them in place. Don’t assume anything. Absolutely have a solid plan of where to go and where you can live if you have to leave. Not just “stay” somewhere for a while. You need to think about long term. Not a week, month, not even a year. Beyond that. I just want you to be safe. I hope your parents are very supportive and you have no real issue after telling them. But be utterly prepared if it does not. Cheers

I’m a trans teenage boy and I just wanted to say that I grew up in Virginia (a very conservative state) so most people aren’t that accepting but watching you has made me so much more comfortable in being who I am and beginning my social transition, so thank you and keep it up.
Honestly Virginia isn't that bad if you live up north. Northern Virginia is very diverse and very moderate/liberal. Their influence over the state only continues to grow due to their high and ever increasing population. Of course the crazy bible thumpers still exist here but they're a lot less common than down south. And if you're wondering why Glenn Youngkin won last election, it wasn't because there was a conservative majority it was because Youngkin won over the moderates with his also moderate views on multiple issues. Meanwhile McCalluf and the media spent all election season slandering Youngkin with blatantly false claims causing the moderates to turn on McCalluf due to his lies and slander.

Fellow trans man from Virginia Beach! I know it's rough, but it gets better. Most people at ODU were pretty cool, and the lab I work at now is great. Part of my job is urinalysis for military contractors so I'm on the bases all the time and even most super conservative military personnel have enough decency to at least wait until I'm gone before they start talking shit about me.
Unfortunately, the trend I've noticed is people are (at least in public) more accepting of trans adults. It's some bullshit, but people here in Virginia are mostly polite to adult strangers but have no problem telling a teen that they don't know how to live.

I don’t think a text message about this would be at all appropriate. It can very well come across to your parents and family as very childish. You want them to believe that you know who you are and telling them by way of texting would show them you are not even grown up enough to tell them in person. Therefore how can you even be able to make such a decision about your life if you cannot even talk to them and stand up for who you are. I’m not being an asshole, I promise. I am just telling you from an older adults position. I am also Trans FTM. I understand how horribly scary it is to speak about this to your parents when you have no idea how they are going to react. Idk how old you are and idk if you are fully or mostly dependent on your parents. This can give them the upper hand because they have a lot of control over your life if you are dependent on them financially, and if you are not legally an adult yet. So I would suggest definitely feeling them out first. That way you have room to decide what you will do before you tell them about yourself. I know that not all parents that are against LGBTQ+ would do anything drastic to you over it. But some do. And if you are under 18 and have no way of being able to support yourself if they were to react very badly and need to leave then you need to be very careful about this. I hope that you know something about your parents demeanor enough that you would know how they have reacted to other things in the past. Only you can know and can consider these things. Please be very careful. It can and is very scary when you are in this position. I know. I’ve been there. There were conversion camps when I was growing up. I don’t think they are around anymore but there can be things that they can still do to make life almost unbearable if they so choice if they react badly. Have a real plan if the react badly. Again, if you are dependent on them and have no way of surviving on your own if you are an adult, think about that very carefully. If you are under age consider it even more becomes they have legal rights over you. You can’t just leave them because they can legally get you back. So first be independent or have a solid backup plan. The last thing you want is to be on the streets. I’m sorry if this sounds too negative to you. But when we are emotional about this, which is natural, we sometimes do not think clearly about all the ways this can go wrong. So know your options if it does and have them in place. Don’t assume anything. Absolutely have a solid plan of where to go and where you can live if you have to leave. Not just “stay” somewhere for a while. You need to think about long term. Not a week, month, not even a year. Beyond that. I just want you to be safe. I hope your parents are very supportive and you have no real issue after telling them. But be utterly prepared if it does not.
