- This video compares the censorship of Time Gal's English Sega CD release (and the few edits also made to the Japanese Mega CD version), with the Japanese games - these being for the arcade, PS1, Saturn, MSX and LaserActive platforms.
Changes made include:
Changing the dates 666 due to occult/religious themes and 1990 because of the Gulf War.
Nudity censorship.
Copyright censorship (Godzilla/Jaws).
The removal of "praying" religious references.

Makes me nostalgic for my college days, renting copied anime VHS tapes from a (not very legal, I suspect!) anime store. Today's copyright police may be aghast, but back then there was almost no Australian anime releases outside of a few Manga Entertainment UK imports... but these rentals not only made me an anime fan, but are the direct reason I bought hundreds of DVDs when the commercial anime market DID finally get here! But I have those scratchy rented pirate VHS tapes of Slayers, Trigun, Gundam and Sabre Marionette to thank.

And publishers have the right to make adjustments to their games in order to pitch to a wider audience?
That's an immaterial distinction. Developers aren't auteurs - they're teams, often acting on guidance from publishers, as are the localisation team. Everyone involved in decision-making is effectively a creative decision-maker. Except where there is a very clear and documented case of a development team being at odds with, an overruled by, a publisher, then the whole thing is one collaborative effort.
This TH-cam channel is doing a fine service in running through all the changes made to games at different points - it's historically valuable and informative - but the ethos behind it, whereby all these changes are branded as 'censorship', or some kind of affront to the true artist behind the game, is plainly sad and ridiculous. Look at how frequently the voiceover has to say that a change is confusing or random - that's because most of them have absolutely nothing to do with moral puritanism. It's just a bunch of decisions made about which audience you're targeting and how you want the game to look to them. Often someone in the team will want nudity taken out so that they can sell the game to a wider market, or just because they think the game has more integrity without the gratuity.

It's also worth mentioning in certain death scenes she would scream stuff like "my butt" and "my breast" which also were removed in the western version.

True. But back then whenever games were brought outside Japan they wanted them to be safe even for 5 year olds. Meh. Ironically it was Mortal Kombat a non Japanese game that created the rating board. But even after that Japanese games were censored. As well as western games I suppose, even in Japan. They can never make up their minds about what's okay.
TalesOfGamerz I guess it's mostly a different perception of the medium. Video games were still viewed as a kids thing back then in the West, it probably wasn't until the mid to late 90s that this slowly started to change.
+Nathan Howard You're right. Video games in Japan were always meant for a variety of people, all different ages and genders, and some are quite obviously aimed at adults. In the west video games were always thought of as a "toy" for kids. It wasn't until games like DOOM, Metal Gear Solid and bloody first person shooters started coming out that appealed to older audiences did video games finally start being considered not just for kids.
Xeokym there were many games unaccessible for kids or quite gory even in 80.

Because there's no "Japanese" option on the NA version. Besides, they just showed you the topless picture you get for completing it on hard in Japanese game in this video, why do you need to go off to play the game when you can put this video on pause and stare at it until your heart's content?

Honestly, it's pretty stupid. They probably only used it in this game because the action is associated with cartoons. For example, Bugs Bunny did that in the classic "Bully for Bugs." The only reason they censored it is probably because they were worried that North Americans (not specifically Christians), would be offended at a Japanese anime girl doing something that Western cartoon characters would do; It's ridiculous.

I thought about something pertaining to 3:32 and i think the picture did get repacaed with something. I am unfully sure but I think EASY (if there was such a setting) and NORMAL get this picture with text (i.imgur.com/5WY7Jdr.jpg) while HARD mode gets this image (i.imgur.com/nZ00wV8.jpg). Don't quote me but I am sure there is a cleaner picture featured in the U.S. SEGA CD version.

Copyright was bullshit even back then, surprisingly (ironically, I tried to watch a playthrough of Cliffhanger on YT just before this, and it had been blocked on some stupid copyright claim!). Not surprised at the censorship, though; even back then, violence was okay, but nudity?! Think of the children! :(

MrDmoney156 Looks like a pretty cool adventure game! Thanks for saying. People reporting censorship is very important as most of what is covered isn't done needle in a haystack style. Normally games are checked out if censorship is already known to exist at all which then usually results in finding a lot more of it. For example, Time Gal started out with reports of the 666 censorship and some vague "death animations altered" mention. Exceptions to this are new releases as well as games with especially violent scenes or those with nudity etc although, it's not like there's some kind of list categorising these all of these titles either.
Also, what people say they really want to see will always be taken into account! Everything is read and kept in mind I promise.
Censored Gaming Yeah I'd just happen to find it out at Hardcore Gaming 101's article about it recently www.hardcoregaming101.net/fascination/fascination.htm and as for the game itself the intro is pretty dope and how well animated it is though i haven't gotten far to see much more of it since i had lost a bit of interest when i first played it before but i'll try to get back into it soon via DosBox Wii and now after watching this video i might've have to check Japanese Time Gal as well while i'm at it.
And also wanna apologize for making so much requests and i'mma try to keep it slow till you get around most of 'em :) i don't want to be much of a drag or a burden having to slow you down and such lol.

Censored Gaming I have another one! Outrun 2 on Japanese PS2 version, Western released Xbox version, and even Arcade original but the Japanese version as that one had a female's costume clothing less revealing while the western versions doesn't have the said costume ;)
+Censored Gaming 666 is necesary as it is intended to represent the end-times, as that monster was like a devil or something. So changing the year to 999, completely DESTROYS the plot of the game.

I think the Western Time Gals Gozilla sound effect was reused for New Super Mario Bros. For World 1's castle once bowser dies and turns into dry bowser

I have been wanting to play this game for quite awhile now and this is majorly disappointing news, did the EU version fair better? I doubt it but wishful thinking it's a bit cringe worthy that this game appears to be dub only as well.

Time Gal was a horrible, horrible game to try to play. It just involved pushing up, down, left or right at the right time in correspondence to when one of the orbs lit up, similar to Dragon's Lair, but it was awkward and unresponsive. Other than that you didn't control anything, you just basically watched a very pixelated "anime" play (or rather, one fast slide show).
