I remember eating there from 2016-2018 and I was so impressed with the food and I've returned many times since leaving Austin. I'm just up the road in Waco now. Now I'm going to plan another trip just to go eat here again! Wasn't aware of the rich history and it's so cool 😎
Wonderful, hardworking people. Family restaurants run generation after generation is hard to come by these days. Grateful for people like them bc I wouldn’t be able to do it.
So glad this place is still around, all over east Austin gentrification has closed so many small businesses and pushed out families that grew up there since the early 1900’s. Makes me happy that Joe’s is still going strong love yall
Love this story. It makes me so proud to see a place like this run by these special ladies who represent the best of the best in our mexican culture. The rich traditions and family strength are just amazing. Que dios las bendiga siempre.
I hope some good folks like them will take the tradition to the future. It's good to hear how they got recognized, and thanks to CBS Mornings for bringing them into the spotlight internationally.
Great story but the only part that got me is when they said immigrants. These people aren’t immigrants when they carry indigenous North American ancestry, when Tejas was once part of Mexico and many of the foods they cook are native to North America. How can you be an immigrant when you’re on your ancestral homelands.
I’m totally against illegal immigration. This family came to the US when there was no border, there was no immigration laws, and there was not welfare. To me these people are Americans of Mexican heritage. Coming into a country legally gives you rights, coming illegally is a crime and should not be allowed. Great story. Great family. The American dream personified.
When I stopped in last December, I had no idea their backstory - I had just heard it was a great bakery. Now I wish I had done a lot more than just gotten a to-go order of cookies!
For those who don't know, in those days when the great grandma came to the US, there was no border. People came and went as they pleased because Texas (the SouthWest) had been part of Mexico until The gold's found in California and the US invaded Mexico. When the border was built, it was opened and unpatrolled until the 20th century.
Where did you get your history info? The US did not invade Mexico. It was colonists who fought Mexico in the Texas Revolution. The Republic of Texas was not even a state at that time. And The Republic of California has it's own history but also was not part of the US when it won it's independence from Mexico.
reminds me of my town's own restaurant/bakery. opened in the 70s and became a staple for the mexican american community. last month, a fire broke out and burned a huge portion of the dining areas and bakery and they put out an update for supporters saying they don't know what the future holds. broke my heart and hope they'll be able to rebuild and reopen.
Living the American 🗽 Dream🎉🎉🎉! Awesome 👍 family history and story of success! And the food looks great🎉! Will have to make that drive and try this restaurant out🎉! Congrats 👏 from Dallas/Fort Worth! 🇺🇸🇲🇽👏💪🙏
This reminds me of a bakery in my neighborhood across the street from a 24 hour laundromat. Sometimes I do my laundry at 3am just to have an excuse to get bread and coffee at 4:30 am when they open. It's a good feeling to be up and working and ready to go when the rest of the city is still asleep! 🗽🌇🗽
Nothing better than warm bakery bread!!! Ciabatta is their best (in my opinion). Enjoy!! Hope this tex mex family restaurant continues for a long long long time!!!

Excellent interpretation
They're immigrants from a few hundred miles to the South. Much less far than a lot of other immigrants.
They are immigrants
My friend zando fell asleep under the counter! 😂

What a beautiful story. The American dream. Looks like amazing food too
A fine example of “Do just a few things, and do them exceptionally well.”
What a cool story. Thank you CBS
As far back as I can remember I've always eaten "conchitas" and now that I'm 40 years old I still absolutely love them!!
I hope their restaurant is free from harm🙏🏼and that many others get to enjoy the love & good food these family members create❤
Great story. I wish you were closer.

Why give Musk any air time in the middle of this beautiful story?
For real! I would rather meet the staff. But the musk situation has really had an effect on every aspect of Austin.
Sadly. Turns out Elon is a nut job.@@TdT2211

Awesome story!
Good for Joes... But the "new Austin" needs to go back to Cali!

❤
My momma makes carne with pork so I can have it with over easy eggs and salsa.
Oh good, no jerika or gayle.
Arriba las Chivas!!
AUSTIN - wake up and dont become LA!! Save this business and deal with the crime!
Did the Great Grandmother immigrate legally?
Are you legal?
She’s not alive, so your question remains irrelevant
@@codename495 she illegal
Place isn’t anything special
Blah. If they wanted to feature a Tex-Mex restaurant they should have started in San Antonio or the Rio Grande Valley (RGV)…not Austin 🙄
everyone is between overweight and obese jeez
Why are Americans scared of people that want to come to America to help america for work americans don't want to do?
LMFAO help who
That family is so American, you would never believe it. No matter how many people told scared people.
