I have been using VG for many years. I am a professional artist. My papers of choice are Arche's and Kilimanjaro. I have tried so many of the paints on the market, both professional and students grades. I always come back to my VG. It is a great paint and has never let me down.

They have some very nice colors like Naples Yellow Red, it's not opaque and very usefull for skin tones. I like also their blues, like cerulean blue or phythalo blue.
Some of their yellows are not single pigment colors but Van Gogh are very precise in terms of color names, W&N paynes gray is almost an indigo.
Overall I like them very much, I don't spend too much money on colours. W&N is nice, but too expensive for the small difference. I have only their lightfast Alizarin Crimson.
Same with all other brands. I use Van Gogh, White Nights and Rosa Galery. I don't care about the grades, it's just advertising. If the pigment is the one that I need and the color is lightfast and intensive then it's a good color for me.

I agree 💯. Unless you are a very wealthy person the vangogh are better because they are affordable. I love white nights but in uk we cannot but them anymore coz of the vile war. Rosa color I want to try but in uk they are also expensive. Are they worth the £75 for 12 full pans

Van Gogh is a very good student brand paint. They re-wet well and are pretty vibrant. I do find some of their colors to be a bit "chalky". Unless you are into buying sets, I don't see a reason to buy one of their sets. Instead, the tubes are cheap enough that you can just buy the colors you want and put them in your own palette. My favorite VG colors are Dusk Pink and Dusk Yellow. They stand up well to professional brand colors.

Thank you. I just bought this year Van Gogh and as I usually use oils I’m loving the nice selection already chosen for us and seriously? The price difference in uk is crazy. Same W&N colours cost over £80 and the Van Gogh cost me only £15

Thank you so much for this lovely comparison. As I have not tried Winsor & Newton yet, I can only say what I think about the Van Gogh watercolor. I have exact the same pocket set and find it amazing. For me as beginner they work just great.

Van Gogh is great, but for some colours like the Cerulean you would want to use the Windsor & Newton as its uses the proper pigment which makes it granulating. Personally i think a Pure Phthalo blue pigment instead of the Cerulean Hue they included would have made the set much better especially as they included white so you could have mixed the Cerulean hue if you really wanted it.

I have never tried W&N watercolors, but I use a lot of van gogh. Up to now, it's been my favorite. A tip for van gogh - spray them with water to soak for a few minutes before using them. It makes the colours wayyy more vibrant

Best Student grade, beginners set: Van Gogh
    Best Professional grade: Daniel Smith.
There are are some colors that I like from W&N but I wouldn't bother get a full set or build one with most colors being W&N. I like everything else from that brand, even their paper is TOP quality. The only product they make, that I don't consider TOP of the line, is their water colors.

  • @s.w.piscesean

thanks for the comparison! Personally prefer the much more magenta color of the Van Gogh cool red.. you can get bright purples with a bright magenta... but I haven't tried either Van Gogh or w&N pro.. I have the cotman and the sampler cet has the permanent rose which is a bright PV19 that makes nice purples with their phthalo blue

@@EceGurlerArt it's a dependable student grade... Though I find it hard to rewet from the pans. The tubes seem fine and I heard they have different formulas for pans and tubes... But It's not as intense as Schmincke AKADEMIE.

Why are you comparing student grade from one brand against professional grade in another? It would have been more useful to have Van Gogh vs Cotman.

    • @EceGurlerArt
      @EceGurlerArt  ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think this video shows how close they are. Often I get questions asked between student grades and professionals. For some reason, beginners think student grade ones are crappy and want to start with professional ones right away. Which is fine, but really not a great investment as a beginner.

    • @EceGurlerArt

Tesekkurler karsilastirma icin.

@@EceGurlerArt In my limited experience I find that it dries down a little chalky with quite a colour shift, sometimes with a glossy finish and don't glaze very well, especially on paper which is not super high quality. Of course, I only have this 12+3 set.

@@markyteo and if you like watercolors that move and flow in water, it doesn't have much movement, either for the most part. That said, I still really enjoy my Van Gogh watercolor paints, and I play with them all the time. it makes it affordable to just jump in an play with paint on a regular basis vs when wanting to do a more serious painting. Also, there are actually a few colors in Van Gogh that I prefer to more professional lines. They have a really pretty yellow-green (can't remember the name of) that I haven't found a match that I like yet in a professional line, so I just use the Van Gogh version instead. There are a few others, but that is one of the main ones I prefer. :)

@@CarolinaCarolina-ph9mx thanks for taking the time to reply. I guess we all get used to certain things once we use it long enough. I tried desperately to use them up (still working on it) and I think at this moment I am kind of aware of its characteristics. I should try out that colour you suggested.
