Gorbachev was the only young man in the Communist Party, the golden day were over, the economy was failing and it was in a very bad situation after the war with Afghanistan (like you said). The Baltic no longer wanted to be occupied, Ukraine and Belarus wanted to have more influence and wanted to be independent. I think it was a only a few of the Central Asian countries that wished to remain with the USSR, as their economy and everything depended on it. In general, it just wasn't as successful anymore.
