    The grey buttons are the D-pad buttons. If you have the manual, you can program analog functions to the grey buttons.

    • @rerez
      @rerez  8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Do you happen to know how to do that?

    • @kylehazachode
      @kylehazachode 8 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      There's a french manual online. just google: '"Ultra racer 64" manual' I'm about to buy a boxed version so I can scan the manual. Seems like a lot of people need it.

      @@rerez It's in the manual. It can't be too complex, I figured it out by myself eventually at 6 years old.

      @@rerez when you have the switch on the side set to "A,B OFF" the small gray buttons right below the steering wheel that are normally mapped to up and down on the dpad are now mapped as the Y axis on the analog stick so you can navigate menus, meanwhile A gets mapped to dpad left, and B gets mapped to dpad right. When the switch is set back to "A,B ON" those gray buttons go back to being the dpad, and the A and B buttons get mapped to that trigger mechanism on the back of the controller.

  • @pocketsuke

    dude, the switch on the side that says a-b off a-b on turns that trigger into up and down.

    I happen to have a ton of old gaming magazines from the '90s, and there was an odd steering wheel peripheral I remember from the advertisement section. It clipped over the analog stick for the N64, and I assume it just held the stick in the "up" position. You could turn the steering wheel, and it would rotate the stick beneath to control your game. I don't have any of my magazines with me to check (I'm in a college dorm and left them at home), but I remember thinking that it was a pretty cool idea back then. Since it was just a clip or strap of some sort, you could easily take it on or off whenever you needed.

    The WII-mote is amazing for racing (tilt to have it work like a wheel, point/use D-pad to use menus and play some other games). Also, the Nunchuck (or however you spell it) allows you to have more buttons and a joystick.

    I remember spending the night at a friends house, and he had 1 regular N64 controller, and one of those controllers. We wanted to play WCW Nitro Revenge I believe, and we went into the tag team championship mode with me using that thing. It was a pain in the ass, but we made it work. I remember being tagged in and not being able to ever directly go back to him, and how excited we would get when we got something right. Fun times.

  • @AmaroqStarwind
    @AmaroqStarwind 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Like the other _WipE'out"_ racing games, _WipE'out" 64_ uses the up and down functions of the control stick for pitch control, but it doesn't actually do all that much on the tracks included in this particular _WipE'out"_ game. This controller would be _almost_ perfect for it, but it might require A LOT of tweaking of the different controls. But as the guy below me said, the switch on the side turns the trigger into Analogue Up/Down.
    If only the NeGCon were available for the N64 in an official capacity.

    I'm absolutely familiar with this kind of controlls, it's used for RC cars since many years and I think that's what they had in mind when they created this. The only thing that's quite different on an actual RC ist the position of the wheel, it's on the side instead of the top like this which is much more ergonomic. Just look at modern RCs from Futaba, Graupner or Sanwa ...

  • @theatlasarcade2012
    @theatlasarcade2012 ปีที่แล้ว

    You actually can use this with Mario Kart 64, in fact I'd say it's probably one of best games for it because it doesn't require much use of up or down on the joystick. To select a certain match type or character, you can gently press up or down on the trigger below the controller where you'd normally press A or B to go or brake, and it will move the cursor in said direction. Make sure not to press it down all the way, as it could execute the A or B buttons. Alternatively, you can use the rubber arrow buttons below the steering wheel on the menus. If the trigger or buttons do not work, it could mean that the control scheme has been reprogramed to a different setting. to change the controller back to it's default settings, Hold down A L and R before turning on the console (turn on console while still holding down buttons) and wait 1 to 2 seconds or until you hear the controller produce three beeps.
    I suffered finding out this information so you don't have to,

    OMG ORDERED!!! They're so damn cheap on Ebay! Like $15 to $20 a pop! I didn't know this thing worked well with F-Zero X! I never bothered buying one cause all the review sites and everyone that owned or tried it have all said it sucks, that you can't move around the menus for certain games and here I thought it was a failed experiment for everything!
    But no... it works flawless with my most favorite N64 racing game of all time... F-ZERO X????
    Ordered! I found one used for $15 + $5 shipping! Better get these before everyone jumps on it and they go up in price!

    error in this video! Most N64 games (if not all) did not allow for you to hotswap controllers. if a controller was inserted or removed, then the controller was not recognized until you turned the system off and back on.
    If you do not believe me, try turning your N64 on w/o a controller. you will be greeted with a message on most games warning you that there is not a controller inserted and that you need to turn the system off, insert a controller, and turn the system back on.

    To be very brutally honest, I have zero idea how to modify controllers without the aid of my friend's help...that said, my friend even ended up saying he would mod the bottom of the controller to have a small port at the bottom to add in a small 3 inch long cable to add in a joystick, like the nunchuck for the wii remotes. Simply put, he said it would be as simple as plug that in to navigate the menu...then unplug for the actual race.
    However that involves modding and while I think the idea is cool, sadly it doesn't serve any purpose to the product without it.

    Had this piece of shit as a child... I appreciate my mom buying into the marketing on the box because i loved racing games... But I can honestly say I used it a handful of times.

    There are actual driving wheels. I had this controller and always banished the person I hated the most to use it
