    Why not put the transom piece on first then do the other to bulkheads

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      We're kind of doing that with bulkhead 9 now, but it was such a production just to get the transom out of the yard, into the tent (through the rear, by the stern), and then get it LIFTED into place, that we had to wait until we could get some long term help with us before we could accomplish that. It's been interesting though. 🙂

Then, of course, wear a crown of healing energy crystals for at least a week while only sleeping aligned north. Only then should they embark on a detox program...LoL.

    @rickemmet1104 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay, so this is probably the most technical placement of bulkheads on the project, and you guys measured and remeasured and remeasured again. Good job, that last transom piece will probably go on without a hitch. We can see that the work of building this kit will be mostly the same - the same process. For some people it would drive them crazy to have to do the same steps for 20 or 22 months, however, you two will be absolute experts by then. It should be comforting to know that you have these skills down at this point. Also, the comments by Mr. Roach and others sure comes in handy! And the time lapse of the storm coming in was spectacular, cheers!

    Great episode. Instead of dealing with trying to get the mixed filet resin into the bag, have you tried putting a bag(large ziplock or similar) into your mixing pot and then adding the resin, MEKP, fillers and mixing them together in the bag in the pot? Ross on 'Life on the Hulls' appears to use this method with good success. He is building a cat from molds.

    Wow. That storm coming in is amazing. I used to love sitting down on the beach watching them roll in as well.
    It's really amazing what you guys are doing given you have never done a project like this before. I would still be at the measuring parts over and over again and I laughed when Matt said something like he'd still stuff it up! Yes, yes, yes. I hear you there brother. I am amazed when I get it right, which my wife says is more often than getting it wrong. It's a team job and you guys are such a joy to watch.
    I'm currently watching two boat builds and it's really an eye opener with regards to the different skills needed to build two totally different vehicles that will essentially be doing the same thing, sailing.
    The other boat I am watching is being made predominantly out of wood. They've been building it for about 4 years, two guys, one's a carpenter/adventure junky and the other is just a friend who wanted to start the project with his buddy. So seeing the different skills needed for both builds is very educational and seeing how you all evolve with learning new skills.
    Anyway, I am enjoying both builds and loving the journey you are all on. A journey that I will never do. So thank you for letting us have a peek into your lives.

Back 30- years ago, we did not know that when my bride worked with glass cleaner (no names, but we all know) all day for 20-years in her frame shop. Over time, without detox, she developed an autoimmune issue that eventually destroyed her liver. My bride is now 3-years post liver transplant. A H. U. G. E. deal at the cost of 1/2 $Million....just for the operation not counting all the pre and post stuff and anti-rejection drugs for life......and more. Yes do the detox‼️‼️👍🏻✌🏻️🙂

    The Resin going off fast issue. As someone else mentioned, its probably the extra catalyst that @Mr.Roach mentioned.
    But there is one other possibility. The Resin Promotion (amount of Cobalt in it).
    There is such a thing as summer promotion and winter promotion.
    From the production factory, Resin comes without the 2 parts that make it Harden.
    Usually the supplier adds one of the components (Cobalt) and you add the other, the Catalyst (MEKP).
    In a perfect world we would be adding both Cobalt and Catalyst ourselves. And this happens (at least in Australia) when your purchasing like 50 or more 44 Gallon drums of the stuff at a time.
    But for smaller quantities, the cobalt is added in the quantity required for the weather (more for Winter, less for Summer) usually by the supplier.
    The reason is there is a catch with adding Cobalt and Catalyst. You cant mix them together. They dont play well together.
    Translation: they burst into flames and burn rather energetically - not what you want in an area where your working with Resins - and the fumes are particularly nasty.
    You cant even transport the 2 chemicals together. They are both considered dangerous goods and must be transported and stored separately.
    Anyway, long story short (and I think its more likely too much catalyst that's the issue here) but you can sometimes get older batches of Resin that were winter promoted sold to you in Sumer and they go off much quicker in the heat.
    Just something to consider.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've stayed away from doing that because we don't want to take the chance that the catalyst will not fully mix in with all the resin if done in the bag. It seems like there would be a lot of cracks and crevices which would be hard to thoroughly mix.

    Warning!!! Warning!!! armchair expert about to comment. 😁😁😀
    I notice you are relying on the fillet and tabbing to hold the bulkheads in place. This could give you problems later as the boat settles, with random squeaks and groans as she flexes through wave and swell action. It would be better to lay a bead of filler between the deck, sides and panel before filleting and tabbing so they can't move relative to each other.
    It's not my boat so can only say what I would have done.
    Jessica, I used to love going to a vantage point in the nearby hills to watch the storms roll in across the plains.
    Cheers Eric

    Love the way you guys strive for perfection in your work and the problem solving methods you come up with, but I always wonder what and how George is doing.

      We're about 30 miles from DC, so we get a number of different crafts passing over us. 🙂

      We've had a few of them throughout the summer, and I LOVE watching them come in. Especially since the rain always stays just north of us. 😃

    Have you started a new batch of hardener? That might explain the resin curing faster.
    Store the hardener in a dark cool place - light and heat degrade it over time.

    This is cool. This is way cool. Jokingly I can't figure out if you guys are crazy or brilliant. Maybe just crazily brilliant. I have to admit that I'm learning a whole lot about fiberglassing. The more I see the less concerned I am about bulkhead buckling. Where do you get those cooling vest. - got to get one of those.

    If you have an Old refridgerator put the resin in it before you mix in hardener it will extend your work time. You may know the hack?

    thanks for saying fillet instead of cove. As a guy who took boatbuilding in HS, 35+ years ago, I kinda cringed. But hey, you are actually building a boat no matter how you call things.

    Matt&Jessica. The Cat is looking great Have you thought of the 3M full head air Mask with air Filter? I think they would be more cooling and would keep you Two Face getting fiberglass material. Just a Thought

      Those are awesome, but way outside of our budget.... Typically around $1000
