    I’d been shooting wildlife with an R5 with the 100-500 and picked up an R7 for the crop factor. This is one impressive camera. I’ve barely touched my R5 since. Good ergo, great pixel density, improved af, similar low light performance and a path to an effective 800mm.

    Thanks again Vanessa for this review of the R7. I purchased my R7 to pair as an extra body with my R6 (for portraits). However, I've used it only for Dog Show Events. I have to say, that I am totally impressed with the accuracy of focusing at the Dog Show Arena; they are fast moving subjects and having that extra reach is perfect. R7 paired with the RF 70-200 f2.8 lens is a game changer. I'll have to test it out for portraits too.

    The R7 is a very capable camera, use it with the RF 35mm 1.8 and my Canon R 24-70mm 2.8 at a sweet 16. At the end of the day you couldn't tell which camera shot what photo.

    • @VanessaJoy
      @VanessaJoy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. I actually haven’t tested it in low light so I try not to talk about specs in cameras I haven’t used on the job. I think the highest I’ve shot this camera is around 1600 and it was pretty clean, but obviously not as clean as the R3/R5 but better than an RP/ m50. Focus was good in lower light in general and dynamic range… I mean, pretty standard but I also shoot for highlights in general, shoot RAW or use flash if I’m trying to balance exposure so that’s not something I rely on the minutia of difference too much.

      I have done pro work, on and off, on an 7D and 7D2 for years - weddings, portraits, news papers, commercial etc. The R7 is light years ahead of the 7D/7D2 so I'd say definitely. It's not going to be as sharp as the FF R series cameras but it's image quality is still very good. Apart from an EFs wide zoom I use FF EF/L lenses (and the RF 50mm 1.8) on it and the results are very good. Most clients will be very happy with the results. High ISO is where it tends to fall down. I use DxO RAW to fix that.

  • @TonyGrant.
    @TonyGrant. ปีที่แล้ว

    I brought an R7 recently to replace my 7D2 and I have to say that it's pretty good. For me the Eye Detect is a game changer - the camera snaps instantly onto the eye regardless of placement in the frame. It makes shooting portraits super quick and easy.
    I use mostly EF lenses on it. The 85mm 1.4L is particularly good on it. I also like the RF 50mm 1.8 - it's not as sharp 85mm 1.4. But it's size and light transmission makes it a very good lens for social situations in low light. The IBIS makes the 50mm 1.8 very usable in low light.
    Noise is not too crash hot at high ISO but I can completely tame it with DxO RAW. It will focus in very low light but I had to switch from Eye Detect to spot focus in extremely low light (1/6th, f1.4, 12800iso).
    I shoot the odd wedding and can't wait to shoot one with this.

      I was a little disappointed in some aspects of the R7 when it was first announced but after having replace my 7D/7D2 with one I have to say that it's a great camera. The eye Detect and the IBIS are game changers, and the reason I brought it. Having an EVF will be great for shooting video too. And of course - a flip screen!

    If a professional photographer uses a cell phone camera, is the professional status lost? It's all in the photographic eye in using any brand, model, or vintage camera. A professional photographer is one who gets paid for being a creator, regardless of the camera used. I will say post editing is a big plus for the eye appeal. All this said, the genre of photography will dictate the proper tools for picture taking. Sports action photographers reed a bigger tool box than product and photographers.

  • @TheGuntoter

    I tried two R7's. The first one was total crap. I am mostly a bird photographer & especially BIF. I never got an in-focus picture out of that first camera. I sent it back to B&H & they send another new one. This one was slightly better, but my keeper rate is less than 5%. My R5 has a keeper rate of over 90%. So you can imagine how dissatisfiedI was. I wanted the crop sensor for the extra reach. Again disappointment since the longer photos were the worst OOF pics. I always wait until the focus points found the bird, but the photo would still be OOF. The second R7 went back to B&H & I got my money back. I guess I will save up and get a second R5. I always want 2 bodies, & I want to go totally mirrorless. I had hoped the R7 would meet that, but another R5 will do the job.
