  • Coming up the story of a song that was written on a bet… Graham Nash was staying with a friend in Hawaii and was getting ready to leave the island to go home when his friend said if you’re such a big shot songwriter let’s see if you can write a song before you go… I’ll BET you 500 bucks you can’t… Well needless to say he wrote a song quickly and let’s just say he won the bet… oh ya and it also became his legendary group Crosby Stills & Nash’s biggest hit… Up next in an exclusive interview, this legend shares the story… as well as the story of their classic hit Our House on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another episode from our series Revelations. In this show featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs and albums. And this one is going to be a good one. On this installment, we are bringing you the story behind several classics by a legendary group. one came from an ordinary moment and one came from a $500 bet. Both became classics. both were written by Graham Nash who is here with the story. Crosby Stills and Nash kicked it into high gear after their debut album… that had classics like Suite Judy Blues Eyes and Marrakesh Express.
They actually got with Neil Young and became Crosby Still Nash and Young and released the album Deja Vu which included even more classic songs that would put them in the highest echelons of popular music from Carry On to Teach Your Children to Woodstock to Cut My Hair to today’s featured song Our House. Our House came from an ordinary moment when Graham Nash was living with Joni Mitchell and the two were out and about in L.A. and had a day together before going home… Graham will tell you the story in the interview.
One of the things that makes Our House so special are the unique vocal harmonies Graham would say in an interview about this and I quote: "It's me and David [Crosby] and Stephen [Stills] doing our best. That's all we ever do. You know, we're lucky enough to be able to do, you know, anything that we want to do, musically. And, you know, these two guys are incredible musicians. Crosby is one of the most unique musicians I know, and Stephen Stills has got this blues-based, South American kind of feeling to his music. And I'm this, you know, Henry VIII guy from England... You know, it's not supposed to work, but it does, somehow”. Our House has become a classic that became CSN’s last hit for quite a while since they worked on other projects before coming together again in 1977 to their 3rd studio record. It hit #30 in the US but was much bigger than its chart position. But Nash actually has become bored of the song and once mentioned he was bored with it

I’ve had the good fortune to meet all four members of CSN&Y. Graham Nash is by far the most kind and respectful member of the band to not only his fans but those around him. But all of them are/were amazing musicians and have proved that over decades. I’ve seen them in singles, pairs and both as CS&N and as CSN&Y. I’ve never been disappointed. The truly amazing part is they were able to keep those huge personalities in check long enough to create some amazing songs. I guess because they were all able to go off and be themselves for long periods and then comeback and play a while before going off again. Keeping Stills and Young in the same band like more traditional bands would never have worked, but as a supergroup that drifted in and out, they made it work. And we are all better for it.

Powerful interview with Graham Nash. How humble and earnest about trying to fulfill the role of a good human.
I have been such a fan of CSN and CSNY growing up. But then, since I sang in school choir I've been partial to vocal harmony. And the songwriting and musicianship was outstanding.
Nash said "he touched a nerve" with Our House. Well he and the others touched my nerves many times with fantastic songs.
Oh, and I agree with him about Pet Sounds. It is a stand alone work. Nothing is so well crafted and complete.
And glad to see that pick of your dad with the autographed album.
Oh, I also should mention that Graham Nash's departure from The Hollies was great for all parties. Of course Nash had a Hall Of Fame Career, but The Hollies continued with great success, and landed in the Hall themselves (With Nash included).

Love the memory of your dad!
I have actually had the pleasure of meeting Graham Nash. I work for Barnes and Noble. CSN was in town (Des Moines) for a concert, and Graham's book Wild Tales: A Rock n Roll Life had just been released. He came to our store for a book signing. I took part in the book signing, and I was the one to introduce him.
We met in the area being used as a "green room". I was carrying in more books to be signed. I smiled, said hi, and he stood up, stuck out his hand, and said, "Hello, love! What's your name?" I was a goner, no kidding. Graham is so nice to his fans!
He signed my concert ticket at the end of the night. And, he hadn't forgotten my name.💖
I still have the ticket. They gave a fabulous concert the next night. Such a wonderful memory!
Southern Cross is my favorite CSN song, followed by Carry On. Such a great group!

In the 1980s, I moved in with my fiance and we had several wonderful years together before he died suddenly at age 32 in 1989. "Our House" was one of our favorite songs and I remember after one crazy camping trip where everything seemed to go wrong, we both started singing "Our House" as we pulled in the driveway and saw our two cats anxiously waiting for us in the window. When we shacked up together, we each had a cat and worried that they wouldn't get along because his cat hated everybody, but our cats became BFFs. We were so glad to be home with our "two cats in the yard"!
Bert loved the CSN "Wind On The Water" album, especially the song, "To the Last Whale/ Critical Mass". We were discussing the sad lyrics, and he didn't know what they meant with the lyric, "It's a shame you had to die to put the shadow on our eyes." I knew that one! I told Bert that whale oil and other parts are used in some cosmetics, like eyeshadow. After that he had to inspect my makeup to see if it's "whale-free" (it was, thankfully!).
I didn't have the heart to tell him the make-up that's sparkly contains guanine, an ingredient made from fish scales.🐟
I still love that song, almost as much as I still love Bert.🥲

I could tell your Dad was around my age, because of things you've said about him, I turn 69 tomorrow and was of the class of 73, he reminds me of so many of my friends and cohorts and just how much the music of the time meant to us, CSN, was one of those groups who's songs seem to define many moments some good some trying, so when I hear those songs I'm transported immediately to those situations that were happening at the time.
I'm grateful he passed some of my generation on to you!

As an English girl, I was a big fan of the Hollies, so when Graham Nash went to America and joined Crosby and Stills, I was interested. I had also liked the Byrds, but I never really knew much about Buffalo Springfield, but I also became a fan of Neil Young. I don't have any particular memories, but my favourite song of theirs has to be Marrakesh Express. It made me want to go to this great African city. I really love it when the Prof shares stories about his father and him. Makes me think of my Dad, god I miss him so much, we had just become such good friends.
The fact that he was able to share some of his success with his Dad is so amazing. Forget the success he has now, but to his Dad, when he saw the signatures by his favourite artist and on one of his most cherished albums, well he must have been so proud.
I think he must have realized where his son was going. He must have known his son was headed to the top of his profession. I only hope his father understood that he had a big part of his sons success, it was the love of music he passed to his son that led to where his son was now.
Funny, I wonder how he would have felt if he’d known that not only was his son was so well known, but that he too was famous in his own right. How would he have felt to know that those life lessons he taught his son, were then taught to those who followed his son’s podcasts. Now wouldn’t that have been cool.

I enjoyed this interview. Growing up, with my folks listening to AM radio, I heard a lot of CS&N. I enjoyed their harmonizing (before I knew what it meant!) and how mellow their music could be, even though there was a pretty deep message behind it. I didn't know what that message was, I just knew I liked what I heard! Then I descended into heavy music...but that is another story! Loved the story about your dad. My folks are both still alive and I am luckier that many can imagine. I don't think I could have survived my battles with cancer without them. I remember going fishing with my dad, even the first fish I ever caught (a rock bass that went back in the lake), as well as sporting events, playing catch, etc. I remember meeting a college friend of my dad's (Nate Thurmond) who was having his number retired during halftime at a game I was at as an undergrad. I got his autograph and asked him if he remembered my dad. He said, "I sure do! Tell him 'Nate' said hi!" It was a great experience, and when I showed my dad the autograph, dad told all sorts of stories about Nate in college (Nate's nickname in college was "Tricky Slim"; how cool is that?!?). Dad wasn't big into rock music (more into the 50s style, but he talked about what people were listening to back in his day...very interesting, as Bo Diddley was bigger than I thought!).

"Crosby, Stills, and Nash" came along during my early acoustic guitar playing days. I tried my best to learn every song on that first album. I learned to play a few. For me the best tune on the album was "Wooden Ships" There is tons of emotion in that tune.
Every one in that singing group , including Neal Young, were established writers and performers, before they came together. CSN&Y are on my all time favorites list, for the same reason they are on yours and your dads.
Adam, you often mention your dad. That signed album gift was special. Your dad had a good ear for ROCK music, something a bit unique for a man from rural Idaho. Fortunately he passed his gift onto you, and now we get to share it. ;-)
