The Fisherman is my favorite book. I'm glad it worked for you, too. You've convinced me to pick up The Drowning Girl and Blood Kin. I'm happy to see King at your number one spot. Great concept for a video!
I read a book a few years back by C.Kiernan called The Red Tree and it was so good, i loved that book! I need to grab up Drowning girl. And will you stop picking on Ararat! 😂 i thought it was fun! I can't believe how some of these got Bram Stoker award! xx
😂😂Yes, I will stop picking on Ararat (unless I do a Top 10 of Noah's Arc Discovery Novels). The Red Tree, I think that book was on my TBR for about 8 years before I took it off. Never did read it; I suppose I still could...
Hi James. Glad its description resonates with you. I never hear anyone talk about Blood Kin, maybe because the author is better known for sci-fi, so his lone horror novel has been forgotten. It's a shame becsause it's quite good, I think.
I'm a big Christopher Golden fan but I have yet to read Ararat. It is on my shelf though. I believe Ararat is part of series. My favorite book from Golden is Road of Bones. Paul Tremblay is one of my auto buy authors and The Cabin at the End of the World is my favorite novel from him. His collection of short stories, Growing Things, gave me the heebie-jeebies and I loved it. As for Doctor Sleep, it broke my heart. 🖤📚
Hi Leslie! I'm curious if Christopher Golden's books always have that "slightly silly" tone or if Ararat is an aberration.. What did I miss in The Cabin at the End of the World? I feel like there was something there, but I wasn't able to grasp it😮💨
@@Michael_Wertenberg Christopher Golden is relatively new to adult horror. The bulk of his works has been YA fantasy, sci-fi, and horror. He also writes film novelizations (Star Wars series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Justice League). His most recent adult horror, Road of Bones, All Hallows, and The House of Last Resort do not have the silly tone IMHO. The Cabin at the End of the World just grabbed me from the start. I felt like I was in that cabin feeling the tension, worry, and dread. Maybe it resonated with me because I constantly worry about making the wrong decisions in my own life. I don't really know. 🤷♀️
@@lesliepowell-mccarty7067 That's a great answer! Thank you😊Christopher Golden writing novelizations, that makes perfect sense. The tone of Ararat lends itself well to that discipline.
Hi Steve. Yes. There is the August Derleth Awards (I think they're much better). I have a video where I rank all 12 of the winners in the awards' history if you'd like more info (there's a link/card at the end of this video).
Very interesting thoughts on the Bram Stoker Awards, Michael. I will not state my opinion because I don't want trouble, but in short- I agree! Love the more positive, smiling, optimistic Michael! 🤣 I have been looking for Zombie everywhere, I have not found it. I recommend The Terror by Dan Simmons. Blood Kin sounds awesome. I do not understand the hate towards Doctor Sleep, an awesome sequel to The Shining.
What's the over/under on when the exorcism trope becomes cringe in pop culture? The pessimist in me is thinking it will be a while.... (can't find the waiting emoji)
I think I liked Cabin at the End of the World and The Only Good Indians more than you did, but I see your points on both. I also really like Disappearance At Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay if you haven't read that one. I do think the first half of Dr. Sleep is King at his best, but the second half kind of fizzled for me. With the combined Shining powers of the protagonists I never really felt like they were in danger and Abra's connection to the first book seemed forced. I know you said you read The Shining later, and that probably is why that connection didn't bother you as much, but considering the amount of Jack's dirty laundry that he dealt with throughout the book, the Abra connection probably would have been something Jack felt guilty about. I think the movie actually handled the second half a bit better, though it's a lot shallower than the book.
I own your favorite. I want to read it soon because of your recommendation. Although I am familiar with the Shining both movie and book. When the movie of Doctor Sleep came out I didn't know that Stephen King wrote it. I was surprised that it was written by Stephen King. I found out when I found it at a thrift store. I look forward reading it soon. Thank you for the recommendation.

Thanks. If you do read them, let me know what you think. I'm thinking The Drowning Girl would work well on you.
I really enjoy your reviews. Your wit is so refreshing “like Pet Semetery but with more fishing” 😁
Thanks😊

Great video. I was thinking about going through this awards list myself. Are there any other lists/awards for horror authors that come out annually?

I have heard good things about The Terror. It's on my radar.
I really loved "The Devil takes you home." It was different and combined Noir with Horror.
You are not alone in loving it; but I'm afraid it didn't work on me.
Your best ranking so far, for me at least.
Thanks😁
With you on the exorcism stuff. Horrific. Happy to see Doctor Sleep in your number one spot. Love King.

Great comment! You are right, the Abra connection was completely lost on me. I did read Disappearance at Devil's Rock and liked it a lot.
Exorcism is daaaaark in real practice. In fiction it’s literally the same plot points, the same actions, and mostly the same settings.
Amen

Hi Peter. Let me know what you think when you read it. I hope you like it as much as I did.
