The 69' was the most beautiful of the GTOs. That color, along with the ram air IV and 4 speed, make this the best of the best! Those things really ran strong.

'68 has a better dash and steering wheel. '69 desperately needs the spoiler to go with the rear lights. '68 doesn't need it

    • @GoodOlRoll
      @GoodOlRoll ปีที่แล้ว

@@CaptainFALKEN the '68 doesn't need the spoiler because it's too ugly for anything to make a difference. The '69 has a way better looking rear end.

When I was a kid which I still am...this bad-boy was the bomb - still is. The attention to detail on this car appears to be concours. Yes the paint and body panals are pristine but the interior and under the hood...ohhhh myyyy....whoof....talk about bragging rights...bravo!

In 1969 , I was walking home with 2 kids from the area and we heard a car rumble way behind us . It got close and was a GTO in carousel red with hide away light and the hood tach.
But as it roared by we saw that " the Judge" on the fender and then the rear tail wing with the Judge .
All of the Judge model came from Oshawa , Ontario where canada only had Carousel red and a reduced selections for Differential ratios.
That GTO Judge is a late production because the glove box Judge wasn't made in time to go on the early 1968 versions. Also, I think the decals and nose restricted the Colours to about 6 until the spring 69 sales where almost every colour ( 15 ) for the GTO was extended to the Judge. There were 3 steering wheel choice , this one is stock where the upgrade is sport with mock wood ring and 3 brushed metal flat spokes and a 2' think tapered rubber hub center piece with a recesses section for the Pontiac badge.
The top price choice was a four flat spoke thick ring like a rally car with a smaller hub and pontiac emblem PMD.
BTW , that ram IV 4spd judge is list as 271 for the production , I think she may mean the 4:33 rear in 239 .
The GTO came from the Ferarri 250 GTO and it stood for a designation in the Industry for Europe and italy where it had a high Power to Weight ratio , carried 2 or more Adults with luggage , and a huge fuel tank .
The Ferrari was a 3.0 L V12 300 hp 5 sp , 1940 lbs with a 35 gallon fuel tank. The GTO's status let buyers know that it could climb the hills with 2 or 4 passenger while it could go a long distant between gas station and have room for luggage as the Grand Touring car .
The sports cars back then were small with a 4/6 cylinder 4 spd and small trunk where you need that rack on the lid . The fuel tank was small around 8 gallons while down shifting on hills sucked the fuel at high RPM's and restricted trips to roads with close Stations .
Their Judge is a 4 passenger 370 HP @ 3500 lbs with the large trunk and 20 gallon fuel tank. This makes it a GTO in Europe where the Torque @ 445 ftlbs could cruise the country side and hills while in 3rd the whole trip like an automatic .
The power to weight ratio is 260 hp per Tonne ( metric 2200 lbs) , the ferarri 250 V12 at under a ton (2000 lbs) had 300 hp .
The history for the GTO doesn't always explain why the GTO 250 V12 had that badge , most people know that is came from the ferrari but not that it stood for Gran Turismo Omologato .
Omologato is italian for 'approved ' .... because Enzo wanted to race it as a Grand Touring car and had to make enough copies and meet the standards . His car topped out at over 170 mph , that's where the 35 gallon tank came in .

Very nicely done, good to show the GTO emblems on the door panels. I owned a 69 in Carousel red, a special order car without the Judge stripe and badges. The heat riser tube did two things, it directs warm air to the carb for smoother run and lowered emissions under light throttle. The engine ran smoother during warmup and also assisted in keeping the carb from icing up. The warm air bypasses to cold air when you stomp on it through a vacuum operated valve on the air cleaner.. best of both worlds, cleaner burn under light throttle, max power under heavy throttle. You do not want to bypass/remove the warm air tube as it does not sap any hp.

The pre heat ducts that lead to the air cleaner base are designed to take warm air off the drivers side exhaust manifold and from the pre heat stove pipe that connects to the cast iron cross over under the aluminum intake on the passenger side . The warm air heated the engine quicker. Once warm the actuators on the upper hood pan closed off the heat from these areas which is why you see the holes on each side of the foam seal. The only air from that point is from the outside functional hood scoops. The actuators on the upper pan closed so this warm air would no longer get into the engine.

What a gorgeous example of a goat. I wasn't a fan of the paint (Judge) package at the time they were out, but think the carousel red is better than than 70 orbit. I'ld prefer a more conservative color myself, but this car being a stripper, with hideaway headlights, 4 speed, 4.33, and RAIV is the epitome of the GTO line, and this car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful car. Thanks for posting.:)

Hi,Nick,I just ran accross your post on your 70 Judge. I wanted one of those so bad at that time, but I didn't want to give up my '64 GTO Vert, quite rare also. What impressed me most was that its performance figures with this engine correlated with my experience on replacing my worn out 389 with one of these crate motors (WH for Firebird T/A).Was a more difficult swap than I expected, but all done,I ran 12.40's with Racemasters at US 30 Dragstrip. My favorite engine from any Muscle car.I can imagine cruising in your Judge is a rush, don't let go like I did.

Gorgeous car and one of my all time favorites. That was a very brief and incomplete explanation of the RA III and RA IV engines. These two are not even in the same class of performance and in addition to heads and intake manifold,ALL the internals in this motor are different including ALL the entire valve train. All said, even the RA III was a stout performer,as a friend of mine and I took his new '67 RA III to US30 Dragstrip to see what it would do.Car turned 13.4-13.5 at 106-108mph.Not sure of any improvements thru 1970 on the III.

Noah Persinger yes, the Judge could be ordered with the "hidden headlight" option. however most were not. remember the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s were the automotive equivalent of a sawed-off shotgun, go as fast as you can (either in a 1/4 mile...or stoplight to stoplight. so the least amount of parasitic drag the better.

The Judge was originally conceived to be like the Road Runner, a striped down muscle car with no 'fancy' options. However, by the time it made production, Pontiac decided to offer it with most any option available on the GTO
