  • Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a wonderful piece of literature with rich, deep characters, coherent themes, and beautiful symbolism. In this video we analyze the themes and symbols, as well as talk about how Purple Hibiscus fits into the author's greater work and into Nigerian and African literature as a whole.

    Purple hibiscuses symbolise the emancipation and womanist agency of Kambili. Kambili's inward quest for liberation is marked with the image of the flower which is purple, a rare and vibrant colour for hibiscus. In addition, the vibrancy, energy, vivacity and beauty of life that Kambili and Jaja enjoy at Aunty Ifeoma's house are in contrast with the oppressive life at their own house. In this sense, the colour purple is symbolic of Kambili's agency and her spirited womanhood that she achieves through her relationship with Father Amadi and through the guidance she receives from Aunty Ifeoma.

    Can you please talk about how Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie started with the allusion "Things started to fall apart" and why she started with an allusion

    • @yvonneanothy760
      @yvonneanothy760 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Things fall apart is the name of another book by Chinua Achebe a reknown Nigerian writer which in itself is a tragedy.

    You mention Wole Soyinka, but didn't say what his most famous book is.

    • @blueridding
      @blueridding  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wole Soyinka is most famous as a playwright, though he has also written novels, poetry, and a memoir entitled "The Man Died". If it were me, I'd start with the memoir. It is a record of his time as a political prisoner.

    "Is he not an image of the very God they worship?" I disagree with this assumption. God does not encourage anything that Papa does. He represents the misled Catholics who rely on church teachings that often misconstrue the word in the Bible. Papa is everything you said but is surely not an image of God.
