      Can't say I'd be a better teacher despite having crippling anxiety as a kid through young adulthood. Exposure and confidence are some of the most important aspects to getting over social anxiety, but it's not just something you can give to someone.

      The whole educational system reeks of this attitude towards kids being all the same, and that those who don't conform are in the wrong... one would think that in this day and age of self discovery and individuality, the system would be adapting to accommodate more diverse ways to teach and educate, especially in elementary and middle schools.
      Sadly the people who realize this are still too fresh out from the school system to have been able to get into positions of power to change stuff. I guess it's a matter of time... I hope anyway.

    What a hero Dad. The fact that he would calmly talk to her about the actual purpose after things calmed down... Even though most parents will say they did it for love(and I believe it's true), not a lot will come back and make sure the fight isn't ending in a sour note. I know on the opposite end, not a lot of kids need parents to lay things out in order for them to understand their parents love them, but seems like in this case, it works for the better.

  • @ViralC1
    @ViralC1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    It is very important to note that, while there are countless "success stories" from people that overcame their anxieties through the "just push yourself" method, that is probably just because the ones that have not overcome their anxieties with this method are still too anxious to speak up about it.
    Not every method works in every case, as the wise bird says, and that is okay. It is certainly not a good idea to force people into a method and then judge them for not "changing enough" as a result from that method.
    This kind of "I can fix you" mentality generally does a lot more harm than good as people see their suggestions or advice as law just because it might've worked in a prior case that they've experienced/witnessed.
    It might not do intentional harm, but it is important to note that, in the pursuit of "unlocking someone's potential", you might traumatize them further and leave them feeling even more inadequate than they already do.
    If you really want to help someone like that then tolerance, patience and general support is key. That is not to say "coddle them", but rather make sure that they know you aren't denying or invalidating their current existence in hopes of replacing it with some ideal image, but that you want to help them live their best life. This also means, however, that they might choose not to face their demons and that is okay too. Not everyone is strong enough to survive that confrontation and truly caring about someone means that you won't _stop_ caring just because they're paralyzed by a fear that, while maybe similar to what you've seen/experienced yourself, will never truly be understood by an outsider perspective (yes, even by those of us that have experienced our own anxiety).
    Anxiety follows a lot of similar patterns, but it is in every case a very personalized experience purely because of the nature and complexity of the individual human mind.
    As a supporter;If the person in question is making an effort to rise above their raging mental storms, then that is something to be commended, but do be sure to keep a considerate eye on them and remind them not to rush too recklessly into the fray. Else they might end up in a worse state than they started.
    Just figured I'd give my 2 cents from my own experience. I'm no professional, but I've known enough people with anxiety (myself included) to know that there is no 1 surefire method in dealing with it and that a lot of people seem to think otherwise...

    • @starkrobb3728
      @starkrobb3728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, there are some people who try their best and really struggle, and we should definitely support them instead of putting them down. Butt there are also people who are too unmotivated/scared to do it. For people like these the do or die method should be done, especially if they're in their formative years because those years are most likely going to have the most impact on their life (career, making friends etc)

    • @rdxzero
      @rdxzero 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to compare that method to being forced through boot camp and subjected to all kinds of abuse to build character, although boot camp is whole lot easier since you are going through the journey with your fellow recruits.

    • @fenris4760
      @fenris4760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely agree with you. Especially the part about fixing someone. I personally just tell people to only try and change themselves if their hearts says it will make them a better person and will benefit them. This ensures they dont change themselves to fit other's standards, cuz they might be totally cool with something we think is bad. Expressing properly why you think some part of them is harmful, and then leaving the decision upto them is the best approach imho.

    I got over my social anxiety because of panic attacks...
    And well, actually... I probably still got some anxiety left.
    But yes, getting forced to do things that spikes up my anxiety did help alleviate the whole part in a long term one. Feels like breaking your limit, then push the limit into higher heights. Then again, it doesn't really work the same for everyone, but if anyone want to get rid of it, they should try every method.

  • @gossamera4665

    As someone who has taught, a teacher's role is to evaluate the current level of your proficiency in the subject being taught. We don't have the time and resources to sit down and do that on an individual level, so we pose questions to try and gauge if we need to elaborate on what is being discussed, if we pose the questions to noone in particular then someone who likely is understanding will just yell out and that'll be that, while the ones not following along will likely just sit there defeated. So we ask individually, and by design often ask the ones who seem unsure or distracted.
    On an individual level though, I fully understand. The struggle is real, there is no quick fix and there is no hurdle to overcome and then you'll be set, like she's making it sound. It's like a train, you need to build up enough fuel to get rolling, sleeping and eating well, practicing a lot, exercise. Then once you're rolling, you need to keep rolling, otherwise you'll slowly grind to a halt again. But I think there are limitations unique to us, and we need to know where those limits are, and try to work around them if we can't power through them.

    I just graduated a part of my school career and I felt nothing but disappointment as I stepped out the doors because I never talked. However, the teachers were super understanding. I only read for a total of 2 or 3 times and they were all very short, the teachers understood that I didn't like to talk so they left me alone when it came to participation like talking. They did small group if I needed help, and would sit down with me and explain the things I didn't understand. The students too, they were all very nice. I'm lucky to have an experience like this.

    Back then, I also don't understand why people are shy during attendance calls or reporting... Until I face the service crew when ordering fast food for the first time. To all who are shy/have anxiety issues, its not that we are rude, we just dont understand/know, otherwise people are jerks when they don't understand anything. Like Enna said, you can do it. Just take the first step even if it's immensely hard.
