You are 💯% correct, and I learned that early on in my career.
FF recorded an album with Ross Robinson, in which he planned to release on his own label. Long story short, we declined the “record contract”.
Because he paid for the entire recording he owned the master. All we had was a DAT tape, which became our demo that got us signed to Roadrunner.
Fast forward, in a douchebag move, without consulting ANYONE in FF, he goes to Monte Connor and sells the master to Roadrunner for $10k…
2 Douchebags, 1 album.
