@@johndurrer7869 he free soloed with a parachute as a gimmick towards the end of his career. He mostly did it so he could both climb big walls and then enjoy basejumping as well. He was freesoloing for years and years beforehand adding the parachute wasn’t about making it safe.

dogs are adventurous and very trustful of their owners. you guys dont know how the dog truly felt. you guys could be saying thats cruel but the dog himself probably felt thrilled about it.

I am only glad that he did not take that dog with him. I feel horrible for his dog who is clearly terrified at :31. His actions regarding his choice to jump with a helpless animal is so disgustingly selfish. I am so disgusted by individuals like him who think it's okay to put a dog in danger like this.
If he hadn't made a conscious decision to take his dog base-jumping off a cliff then the dog wouldn't have experienced what true rush is. Don't get me wrong, while you do have a point here.. that dog had the time of his fricking life! You know why he's so excited in the end? Or because we both need eye protection, other headgear, before "it" becomes remotely interested. I guess only the dog, or I should say Whisper, knows it's One of a Kind, and I sincerely hope they didnt cut his nuts off to be "animal welfare friendly".........A knew pastime for Dogs has just been invented, and all pets want in on the action, apart from Cats, who have much better depth perception, flying times, angle of attack etc, and really don't like the odds :)

Having met Whisper who is one incredibly smart dog I feel that he is really into it. Dogs can tell you when they don't want to do something. Ever tried to bathe a non-water dog? This dog is an athlete and he loves his master. I felt privileged to meet him.

I feel the same; this love and the dog makes a big fiesta at the end after a quiet flight where, after a bit of apprehension he seems to look around the beautiful mother nature!! I m ill and poor, I can't do what I want when I want but i ll overcome and realise my dreams and share it with my loved ones until my death, thats what Dean has done!! today I feel alone and sad in the illness, no phone call, no friends anymore, but Im 33, I ve still hope and looking at this video, wich I knew when it cames out, makes me really cry real tears!!if you read me I wish you peace and love!

As a veterinarian specialising in behavioural medicine, and as someone who studied animal behaviour long before being a veterinarian, I watched this video a few times before I drew my conclusion about how I felt about it.
It's an Australian cattle dog, a breed that is highly intelligent, very hardy, and used to working under difficult and demanding circumstances. It appears to me that this dog has been extensively exposed to circumstances that most dogs would panic under; the dog is reasonably excited but not terrified when it was harnessed across to the launch site. Being bundled up in the cocoon during flight would also reduce its stress levels significantly during the drop; thunder-shirts for reducing thunderstorm phobia in dogs work by the same "hugging" principle to keep dogs calm.
So, I don't believe that Whisper is significantly stressed in this situation. Somewhat, perhaps, but no more than any other high-exertion exercise such as cattle-herding.
However, I *do* believe that this is reckless endangerment of a companion animal for the purposes of entertainment. Whilst Potter obviously sees this as a bonding exercise, there are appropriate ways to bond with your pet, and I don't see this as being one of them. You cannot explain to a dog the risks involved in the activity, or be sure that they will behave predictably in a situation such as this. This could have easily ended in disaster had Whisper, for any reason, panicked during the free-fall. Keep the bonding time with your pets to ones where you won't suddenly die if something goes wrong as a result of doing something extremely risky. The "noble" idea of dying together, to me, is a load of crap. How about you just let your dog possibly have a nice, long life with someone else if you die? Or at least give them the chance to. Sure, it's possible Whisper might miss you badly enough that losing you renders her so depressed that euthanasia is warranted, but how about you let Whisper decide that, hmm?
The guy could also have landed poorly against a rock, on his pet. Anything can happen during that kind of extreme sport.
The fact that Potter died during a jump is proof enough that the dog's life was constantly at risk.
Also, most people reacting as sheep herds, all these videos created a new trend : paragliding with your dog. Many people set the goal of doing sport with their pets, paragliding being the most extreme one. To achieve their goal, and to show off on selfies, some might ignore signs of the dog panicking, or not wanting to be part of it. I see people bike with their dog trying to run along, even when the dog shows signs that it is tired, thirsty, or unwilling. Many people today do sport obsessively, unwilling to slow down when people are in the way, getting mad... how could such people listen to their dog's needs?
Clearly this Potter guy was very selfish. What narcissism do to people....

While I would not explicitly say that this is a good thing to do, most comments here really are overexaggerated. From what I've seen, this dog really lives a magnificent life, outdoors and with loving people.
I don't know wheather he liked this or not, if he was stressed or not nor what the incentives for this were. But even assuming this was the most unpleasant time he's ever had, he still is very privileged.
If this really is the cruelest act of animal abuse that you are concerned with, then open your eyes.

Five beautiful pitbulls were shot by police as they escaped to the second floor patio of my neighbors house after the ASPC (some of which wore PETA shirts) showed up over some bull to get the guy to round up his dogs since their escape to his second floor patio meant ambush as they they tried to catch these healthy dogs while the police sat on their owner in the front yard. You think it's animal abuse? What would you do if the dog disagrees with you, and how far are you willing to go with that dog to get your way? Or does the dog jot even have a say in whether or not he wants to stay with his owners while battered women deserve what they get for staying with the people who beat them versus an army of pitbulls jumping on their owner and his family lovingly as they came home from school or work. You are human scum. Do our pets a favor and have a cheeseburger because everytime I hear someone saying they're vegetarian I hear screaming, crying, dogs whimpering, and gun blasts. I hate you people more than Muslims saying Islam is about peace.
