    When I saw you place the GoPro into the kiln, I was going to joke, "Kiln temps aren't good for a GoPro", and then you nearly did... The fumes would have been terrible!
    A couple notes for kiln loading, notice how Jon left a gap between the wares and the walls. This helps prolong the life of the elements. If you put things too close, it redlects the heat back onto the elements, causing them to wear sooner.
    Also, it isn't advised to reach into a powered on electric kiln. The elements have over 200 volts and at least 30 amps. You touch one of those, you're dead.

    Hi Jon, I have seen most of your videos thanks for all the knowledge! Not sure if you are into taking video requests but I would like a video on how you finish the bottom of your mugs. I notice most of them are smooth with your logo and a rim on the side. Do you turn them or do they just come off the wheel and you stamp them? Thanks

    Hi Jon! I have a question for you, I am trying to instal my kiln and I am wondering how important venting the kiln is. Do you have your kilns vented?

    • @benpatterson4452
      @benpatterson4452 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you mean venting the room, or the kiln itself?
      Venting the room will pull out some heat, as well as fumes.
      Venting the kiln will provide better glaze results, as it is pulling more oxygen into an oxidation firing.

    Hi Jon, I've been watching your ceramic classes for a few years now, I've learned so much from you!!! I really appreciate that you keep your videos well edited and fowl language free!
    I was a volunteer as one of Jehovah's witnesses in the Patterson New York Headquarters. I worked with Biblical videos, making props from clay! You've really helped me a lot and I have to thank you! We recently have been asked to move to our Branch in Australia and now I have set up a new studio here just outside of Sydney.. we are setting up a new movie studio here. There is a lot to learn here in Australia,new type of wheel with no bat pins 😳new kinds of clay and the metric system , Celsius temperature ... it goes on . But like the rest of the world we too have been affected by the Corona Virus . After your compelling video asking if the world will ever be the same , I thought I should share our website with you .
    You could also check out our convention videos to see Biblical videos with ceramics we've made ... and we also have children's videos that teach sharing and kindness and cleaning your room, saying please and thank you ... things I know you would love for your boys! It's all free and you don't have to sign up for anything or enter any information about yourself unless you want to be contacted.
    I know this will help answer your questions! I'll send a few more links hope you enjoy!!!
    Thank you for your excellent Chanel keep up the good work!

      Hi Sis- I was so happy to see your comment here and intrigued with the use of pottery on the new movie sets. I quickly tried to add pottery to my builder assist but couldn’t find it as a skill. Oh well…. Thank you for all you do for Jehovah and I’ll keep my eyes open for pottery on the next movie/video I watch.

    I knew you were about to make a very big mistake with that go pro when I saw the angle from the kiln. lol. I know very little about pottery. Why bisk first? Is that how you spell it?

    • @Kelly-vo2wu
      @Kelly-vo2wu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      bisque! I don't know the ~science~ but basically, clay before firing is pretty fragile, so when it gets bisque fired it becomes a lot stronger, pretty durable, and not nearly as porous. So then you can go in and put a glaze on it and fire it again, and then that firing turns the silicon in the glaze to glass and makes it nice and smooth and pretty and not porous, so it becomes good for holding liquids. Depending on the use of the object and the clay it doesnt *have to be glazed* but for mugs and things like jon makes obviously its different. Hope this helped! This is my very basic understanding of the firing process haha. &of course some people do a single firing, some people do pit firing, raku, salt/soda firings, all sorts of different things and thats all different and idk much about those lol

    • @afasimpaur
      @afasimpaur 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bisque firing reduces critical failures in the glaze kiln. For example, if a foreign object (like a bit of plaster from a wedging table) gets embedded in the clay that would cause a piece to explode, it is better to have it blow in the bisque load than to have tiny airborne shards landing on glazed wares and ruining the entire load.
      Also, bisque is more durable than greenware. You can store it indefinitely without concern that if it gets wet or bumped it will lost. If you glaze it and then realize before you load the kiln and that you really needed to glaze it in a different color, you can just wash the glaze off and start again. One of the most efficient methods of glazing is by dipping the piece into a bucket of liquid glaze. While you *can* dip greenware, the unfired clay can absorb too much water when you dip and the greenware is super delicate.
      Bisque (or biscuit) firing is insurance as much as anything else.

      @@Kelly-vo2wu Thanks. I would love to do my own pottery someday which is why I watch Jon, but for now, I'm just learning. It makes sense to do this for mugs and things that will hold liquid.

      @@Kelly-vo2wu I would love to but I don't think there are any classes near me. And my life is very busy right now. It's really not the best time to add more on top of my current responsibilities. When I'm in a better place to learn and spend the money for supplies I definitely will.

      it's not too bad. i have witnessed kiln loads of more than just mugs that are tumble stacked. it just requires you to be good at tetris, kind of. most things if stacked well will not break (unless they're wayyy thin/fragile and/or are under more pressure than appropriate)

      ive been researching lately on raw glazing and cant find much info on it. Do you need any special glazes for raw glazing?

    • @mrpeanut911
      @mrpeanut911 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@josephbrazda5664 Underglazes only. sometimes clear glaze but still wouldnt recommend. the reason you bisque before glazing is because when you bisque, the clay particles go from being many particles making up the piece to the entire thing becoming a solid, single form. it also makes the clay porous, which allows the piece to absorb and bind with the glaze, which will not happen unless it has been bisqued. In short, glazes won't work properly and may not bind with the clay on a molecular level.

      I paint on underglaze in the green ware stage and then fire to bisque...can I stack underglazed pieces the same way as Jon did for his bisque fire or would the glazes stick to or contaminate each other (i.e. brown glaze getting on blue glaze)?

    • @HokiHumby
      @HokiHumby 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrpeanut911 you're probably not wrong. however, I have glazed things before bisque (with a raw glaze) and the glaze-fit was great.
      @Joseph Brazda as adrianne said, simon leach goes into it pretty in-depth. i think the glaze does need to be engineered to be once-fired and serve as a raw-glaze
