The Washington Post should be required to disclose any conflict of interest when publishing stories... Bezos also owns Zoox which is a direct competitor of Waymo
Yeah they both are. In fact, I'd say human drivers are worse on average. Enforcement is important, but I think the real solution is to design our streets to be safer. Curb extensions and pedestrian islands allow pedestrians to cross just one lane at a time. Steel bollards can also be used to narrow the lanes and force drivers to slow down or risk damaging their vehicle. Europe tends to do this stuff much better than the US, and they have far lower pedestrian death rates over there.
How has this worked out for SF so far? Walk SF has been advocating for traffic slowing messures for 25 years and year after year pedestrian deaths continue to rise on top of SF losing 100k people since the pandemic. The NHSA did a survey and asked why drivers speed and the overwhelming response was "traffic" which is the purpose of everything you mentioned. Slow vehicles by creating traffic but once the traffic let's up people speed and people die. Pedestrians need to be held accountable too. Face in your phone while crossing the street. Making eye contact with drivers at stop signs. Stopping at intersections with stop signs and not just continuing to walk into the street. @@mariusfacktor3597
Cops see you not stopping and you'll get a ticket for failure to yield to a pedestrian. Just cause humans are bad at driving, doesn't mean AI can also be bad.
I walk, cycle, and occasionally drive. The Waymo is by far the safest driver on the road for pedestrians, it will always take your safety as paramount - something humans no longer do in 2025. This video is ridiculous.
He's not close enough to the lane and what about all the human driven cars that didn't stop? I've been at the curb on 7th and Natoma (unmarked crosswalk to cross 7th) and had waymo in the first lane stop multiple times. One time I waved the waymo and without hesitation it went on
As a Vietnamese, we do this everyday. We judge how fast a vehicle is going by looking if it still far away, we walk forward fast and stop (not right infront of the approaching vehicle) if it isn't within stopping distance, repeat this process until make to the other side.
Just been to San Francisco and I disagree their better drivers than humans they stopped and gave way to me when I wanted to cross the road hope they come to Australia real soon
This is so silly. Standing still on the sidewalk and then barely stepping into the crosswalk expecting a Waymo a full lane away to slam on the brakes. I walk and bike in SF all the time and they are some of the safest drivers around
If you don't slow down and stop for pedestrians standing still waiting for cars to stop, when are pedestrians supposed to cross? Darting across the crosswalk before cars have stopped isn't how anybody teaches a kid to cross.
A waymo ran a stop sign without even slowing down when I had the right of way on my motorcycle. I was stopped at an adjacent stop sign. I started to go since it was my turn and the waymo came out of nowhere without even stopping. Good thing I was able to avoid a collision. I've seen them make a few more very unsafe maneuvers, but that was the worst.
At this particular location, that wide strip of concrete pavement, which is part of the lane, looks like sidewalk. Perhaps that is what Waymo device is seeing?
Everyone calling this a hit piece, forget the fact that anything he says negatively about Waymo, will also reflect on Bezo’s company too. This isn’t about Waymo; it’s about autonomous driving technology.
Waymo is much more likely to stop for pedestrians than human drivers often in situations that it arguably should not have stopped. This particular situation that he's filming nobody is stopping because he's entering the cross when the cars are way to close to stop. This whole piece is hot garbage.

Also note that human drivers weren’t slowing down for the most part.

Doesn't matter. Wayno is making an illegal meanuvre. They're supposed to follow rules perfectly

@@purplepill2024 the ai is trained on humans its inevitable bad human behaviours creep in
This is a ridiculous hit piece. Convenient that daddy Bezos owns a self driving company that is about to compete with Waymo.

Waymo famously give way to pedestrians more than most drivers. Pretty poorly researched piece of media

You literally have to start walking for it to stop or slow. It can detect the speed you are walking and whether it can pass you or can’t

Human. Drivers are not stopping either
I don’t see the human drivers stopping either…

Why are we even entertaining these cars?
That street design is atrocious.

no-one was stopping!
Those houses are probably four and five million dollars.

But then the others didn't stop as well... Assuming those were human driven??
Lol complains the smart car doesn't stop when nobody stoped lol
This is why Zoox is going to be better than Waymo
Come on give them some time .
Why aren’t the police ticketing these vehicles? Call the police and report immediately

Depressing how many brand warrior weirdos are in these comments. No one should find this acceptable, even the whataboutism crowd.
Tesla will win this race
As long as there is room for improvement, these cars should not be on the road.
They should
have you seen how much improvement humans need?? these are literally ten times safer
