So true! I bought a second hand cheap violin that was OK sounding. Then the neck came off - we have no small amount of humidity here in Nova Scotia! - a Luther had a go at it and it sounds beautiful! Even the smallest things make the biggest difference. ALWAYS get a proper Luther to set up your instruments, you will not regret putting it in the hands of a master!
Thanks! I know this video is old but I purchased an instrument off this sight. It was shipped in amazing time because I live in the USA and it was shipped from Australia! The violin is amazing for the price I 100% recommend shopping from the website in the link in the description . They have great instruments for reasonable prices!
Great information. At last, someone who understands the importance of correct setting-up, and the potential of 'cheap' violins, which is every bit as good as those costing a lot more, and I do mean A LOT!
I have a Knilling Bucharest viola I bought for 2,000 amazing sound, it's about 50 years old. But I've seen and used other Bucharest items such as Violins and Viola for much cheaper, and still amazing quality and sound
Fantastic video. Thank you for the help. I bought a cheap violin a couple of years ago wanting to learn to play. It was absolutely awful and I never ended up learning because the violin was so bad. There may be hope for it with some minor adjustments. Thank you! :)
I have 33 years experience in the music business. I repair violins, violas, cellos as well as other instruments. My 33 years includes the rentals of instruments as well. My knowledge is based on personal experience and the feedback of hundreds of string instrument teachers. I have seen many ebay violins in the 50 to 100 dollar range and they are basically kindling wood with strings.
I have 2 Chinese made handmade violins, that were inexspensive, less than 100.00 US. They are fantastic instruments, great tone and vocal qualities. Just because they are expensive doesn't make them good. the wood is most important. My first is maple and spruce, the second is also maple and spruce, but with ebony fittings, and nylon core strings. the 1st is great for celtic and country music and the 2nd is for classical. Great vocal qualities from both. Be mindfull of the humidity on any violin.
Your best bet is to find a music shop that rents well known brands...like Yamaha, Suzuki, Sherl & Roth etc. Assuming you are a full grown adult, 14 years old or older, you will want a "full size" violin, bow and case. Ask them if they have any used instruments (previous rental violins) for sale. If you want the lowest price tell them you don't care if it's scratched up and used looking as long as it plays well. You may pay a little more at a store but it's worth it.
What's the violin shown in this video? I love the dark color and smoothness of the wood. I'm looking for a good violin in the 200-250 USD price range and would prefer to have one that looks similar to that one. But of course, performance comes before the visuals.
This guy is great! Basically you can buy a cheap violin, "entry level", for under $230 bucks and then turn around and have a Luthier fix the key components and make it sound better. I certainly applaud his information, but custom work by a luthier is expensive and I would be better off buying a $500 violin and asking one to set it up for $50 bucks. (Not using custom tooling, just string and bridge adjustments.) Very informative though and not being sarcastic.
@vissi87 Thanks for your advice to stick to the Mercedes. One of our suppliers drives a Porsche and he is in love with it. He explained to me the term "Porschism" - it stands for the relationship between owner and the Porsche as if it was a super human being, definitely not just a car!
I once bought a beginner violin for $300 in my homeplace and it was just awful. After the first three years I couldn't play on it anymore... I couldn't play any really fast parts, or any more advanced Vivaldi, or even not a Swan Lake... and had to buy new one to continue and I bought myself one old one for $600 and it did sound so amazing! I could play whatever I wanted on that one and it sounded good.
There is phone and comp aps that can tune for you. Also if the strings are new you will tune it till they set in.If they are not new this can be in the quality of the violin. You get what you pay for.
See TH-cam "thepianoinstructor" her name is Alison Sparrow, she has several video clips including tuning. She fabulous and you'll just love her as all her students do.
How do I distinguish between the standard woods and a plywood/other bad choice of woods used to make a violin? I also wana know what are "Grains"? Most youtubers simply point out to the surface of the violin to explain Grains but I fail to understand :/
Hi Elroy, good question! This forum has some great answers regarding how the wood affects an instrument. music.stackexchange.com/questions/8246/does-the-kind-of-wood-used-in-making-a-violin-affect-its-sound The 'grain' refers to the wood fibers in the violin, often youtubers are referring to the pattern that this makes on the violin :)
It sounds nice and open, but lacks an austere velvety bottom end of higher class instruments. It may get darker with age, more often than not these violins just go dull instead of dark...
@josephsmy1994 No one has answered in a month so I will. There is a link in his description He said 230 I think on what that one costs. His accent for me makes it a bit hard to understand what hes saying with some things. The entry lvl is showing to be 299 dollors with a possible 30% discount but I didnt click on the link to see what you had to do to get the discount.
Can you suggest the best ones to pick up for celtic music for a true beginner (I want to play with this violin at the house). I think 200 or less is best. Thank you!
i bought my violin of this fella :) head it for years now and its been great :) but be careful ... with his playing he makes any violin sound amazing !!! :)
Interested in any comments you may have about sound distortion ("moo-ing") on the D and G strings of small violins (1/10th, 1/8th, etc.) - are there any small violins that can avoid this? How to mitigate?
This is not because of the size of the violins, it is because of the strings on small violins. They are generally too thin and floppy. They should be thicker than longer strings to make up for being short (to achieve sufficient mass).
Im about to get an violin but i thought the price was like Rm 100-250 cause when we pass shops they all say its like Rm100-300 but we ended up having a deal for RM 700 ... for violin i cried ... because the price was different from what i thought.. i will be checking the Rm700 violin this month 😭im afraid help?? ..
@DietrichLasa Haha no problem. Yea, the reason I say that is I looove Mercedes-Benz and don't care much for Porsche as a friend of mine owns a 911 Carrera 4S and has had nothing but trouble with it. I can definitely understand the relationship between someone and their car though. Much like the "Alfisti" who will stand by their Alfa Romeos no matter how much they break down ;)
well i m a guitar player...and i wanna start playing the violin...i found a cheap one"harley benton HBV 840v....its an electric violin...u think its ok for a beginer?
You can buy used older instruments for inexpensive prize, maybe a bit more than those cheap violins, but you can use it for allot more time if not a lifetime, whereas a cheap violin may not work for long, especially if you are quickly improving.
Handmade doesn't really mean anything these days, just that a process during production was done by hand could be anything. Doesn't mean all of the components aren't still churned out by a CNC, this is how accuracy and consistency are maintained anyway. Cheers for the vid :-)
hey guys i have a question, i found a violin on ebay for 80$ does that mean it sucks. beacause i just started learning how to play the violin. so i want something cheap and easy. so can someone please help me and tell me if that is reasonable or is it like a scam.
the biggest improvement one can make to a cheapo violin is "change the strings". Low priced violins usually come with terrible strings. Buy a quality brand name set of strings for about $35.00+
ten dollars was a hell of a lot of money 50 years ago. You could buy 100 bottles of coke for ten bucks in 1962. With "new" instruments price definately has a bearing on quality
when i started to play the violin i played on cheap rented ones but my teacher asked me how much was this? i answered 20$ per month(4 months) and her jaw popped. later i got a 4/4 violin 2000$ from my teachers ex-student for free. it sounded terrible. But the last violin i bought (i raised the money my self) was 800$ and that sounded better than my teachers 10000$ violin.
Hey, when I first took orchestra class, my dad took me to this one shop and the guy had a violin for $100 with a bow and case. I've always thought I was bad, but it was the violin. The violin sounds so much different than the school's violins (in a bad way). Is there one that has a good price and sounds really good and that can last at least 5 years? Is the one in this video great?
Our beginner range is currently on sale at $235AUD. Just make sure if you are buying from a private seller that you test out the violin prior to purchase :) Good luck!
This cheap violin sounds good to my beginner's year... not sure the good sound come from his playing skill or his post-modification on volin? Interestingly, his pinky don't touch the bow ... but it still sound good.
Caveat emptor. You CAN spend $230 and get a decent beginner violin, or you could end up with crap. Personally, rather than go to Sam Ash and get a crappy $250 - $300 starter kit, I'd do some research and get a handmade Chinese factory violin online. That's also a crapshoot, but it's quite possible to pay $150 - $300 for a violin out of China and end up with something that sounds like it cost $1500 or $3000.
i have an entry level violin and it sound good for me. in my video that i played wieniavski romance im using that entry level. a karl hofner... someday i wish to have their master violin if the entry level is that good the master is 100 times better i think..
Honestly, it is a roll of the dice when you buy a cheap violin. When I say cheap I mean the really low priced ones from about $50 to 150 dollars. Your best bet is to go to a brick & mortar real music shop and ask them what they have in "student grade" USED violins (possibly a previous rental violin outfit)...in "known brands" like Lewis, Yamaha, Sherl & Roth or Suzuki etc. You will probably pay closer to $250 or possibly higher. Feel free to ask me anymore questions.
Well, they work. That's the violin I have. I'm just starting and it's fine to learn on. But I can never make it sound very nice, and I cant be sure how much of that is me and how much is the violin. If I could do it again, I'd spend a bit more and get something nicer.
I had one, and I'm guessing it's just the one I got, but the nut was too high, the bridge was to high, and it couldn't be lowered because the heart was too high, and on one side of the neck, it was very flat. It was a little uneven, but still pretty good inn sound, but it was very loud. So there was really no problem with the sound, but it was a bit difficult to play.
"It sounds like a real violin." Um, well, what is a real violin and what is a fake violin? :-) I ordered one of your violins you are speaking of in this video. I am looking forward to receiving it! Update: I received the violin and it actually sounds nice!

@vissi87 Thanks for the feedback. If you like the idea to buy good quality cheap violins, then you may also be interested to look at good quality, inexpensive strings. You find them at maestrostrings do t com.
I think this man owns some violins.
+DaveDexterMusic I would imagine this to be his bathroom collection.

I think we just both commented on the same video.

I have just started to learn the violin. My Violin cost £40. It is a beginners one. Stentor Student 1.
It sounds ok.
KK Music does boy set up the instrument as shown in the video, but the Cecilio line is delivered in pretty goof shape.

what do you think of the stentor 2 ?
i m thinking of the Cecilio CVN-500 model. I'm a beginner.
It sounds about like mine which is a beginner level that I got for about $400, but it's so hard to play in tune.

Did you end up getting a new violin?
what about a 35 dollar violin?
Hi. Where can I buy that violin?
where can i find this violin?
whats it called?
I wanna buy a voilin so i can have at home so i dont bring my instrument home everyday and good violin brands that are cheap. Price range $100-$150
I bought mine for 99€ at Thomann, it's quite nice for a beginner violin.

+FlipTheAngryAsian Just to clarify that the Arco violin is not the same as the Crescent violin.
I just bought a cheap 60 dollars violin. I can play Hearts and Flowers, which is great when i want to mock someone.
I saw him last week :)
"It sounds like a real violin." Um, well, what is a real violin and what is a fake violin? :-)
I ordered one of your violins you are speaking of in this video. I am looking forward to receiving it!
Update: I received the violin and it actually sounds nice!
I need to tune my new violin, but i am a basic student I need help if someone can help me much appreciated.
wait, $230 fora violin? i spent 70 dollars on mine, and its pretty good. but i cant seem to keep it tuned/tune it at all. can anyone help me.:|
Did you ever end up learning how to tune it properly?
Thats violin is handmade....?
please how much does the violin cost that one you hold
fadi yako 230$
A violin is one of the most complex to make well. IMO 'handmade' in a factory setting is misleading. Handmade should mean each component critically selected and fashioned together by ONE, master craftsman and the application of details and varnish by that same maker. Otherwise it is not a truly crafted instrument. Buy the most instrument you can afford, not the least. The better you get, a lesser quality instrument doesn't increase in value and also inhibits growth of good technique. Cheers.
@FFSray
i think hes from austria
@XCMxcmXCM hey did you every bought your violin on ebay? if you did how is it cuz i saw one for $50
Humorous.
I got a used 400 dollar for 70 bucks and pawnstore in downtown nagasaki
Great! Here in Brazil we find chinese violins for something like 70 dollars!!
You're kidding...right.
Huge hands!
that was kool
I'm confused. Does this man own violins?
A 1 million dollar fiddle is hard to play in tune too, you know.
i want one of this how can i get one any one can help me ?
Amazon has quite a few!!! You have probably already found one but if anyone else is wondering, Amazon! Also E-bay... personally I don't trust E-bay but that's just me

lol 230$ ? they come at< 100$ brand new in my homeplace
this is out to tinylucus. i think what is happening is your pegs are lose. try putting some chalk on them so it stays in tune. by the way am in wyoming. where are you
With that accent, that background, and that amount of gray in your hair there's no doubt you know what you're talking about.
Lol I would not honestly get such a cheap violin
I'm struggling with the current one I have right now, playing advanced techniques
A luthier might adjust it for me, proper bow, proper bridge, proper nut and everything since the instruments shop I bought it from didn't have any of that
But it still sounds so muted like if it's has those practice mute on it, like if it's a cartoon box not a violin
