    Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman from Op Ivy would later play in Rancid. This is classic Ska Punk with tons of influence from Rocksteady and Reggae and some hiphop/rap. One of my all time favorite bands. I played this CD nonstop when I was young in the 90s.

    Operation Ivy is the sun that all other East bay Punks reflected. Green Day used to open for them! Two members of this band went on to form Rancid. one of the other most popular punk acts of the 90's. Every single song on this album was different and some bands based their entire vibe on one of their sounds.

    It's a very Lo-Fi sound for sure. I got into them in 1995 which was still years after they'd split. I used to run a punk and ska website in the early 2000s and got a chance to sit down and interview Jesse Michaels for his (at the time) back Common Rider. He gave us at least an hour of his time during the Ska Against Racism tour in 2002. As a longtime fan it was everything I'd hoped it'd be. Super down to earth and open and just real.

  • @noodle_fc
    @noodle_fc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Op Ivy and Minor Threat were contemporaries emerging from the west coast and east coast punk scenes, respectively. Pretty interesting parallel stories. Both very influential even though they didn't last long at all, really no more than a few years. For both bands, you could get their entire catalog of releases on just one CD (it helps that their songs tend to be short). Operation Ivy's ex-members would form Rancid, while Minor Threat lead into Fugazi.

    • @noodle_fc
      @noodle_fc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fun bit of trivia: The cover of Rancid's breakout release ...And Out Come the Wolves would pay tribute to the famous image of Minor Threat's singer Ian McKaye's brother taking a nap on the steps outside a club.

    • @robertfoster1665

  • @buzzbomb67
    @buzzbomb67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    So glad you did these guys! SUPER influential!
    There were plenty of other bands prior to OpIvy that mixed punk and reggae/ska. 2nd Wave Ska (aka Two-Tone) bands like The Specials, The Selecter, English Beat, Madness, and several Hardcore Punk bands like Bad Brains, Scream, and Underdog. But they were punk songs and reggae songs, not punk/ska songs. Operation Ivy was really the first to fully mix Hardcore Punk with Reggae, Ska and Rap, to create Punk/Ska aka Skunk aka Skacore.
    They weren’t around long but they basically spawned the entire 3rd Wave Ska movement of the early-to-mid-90s, and after the band broke up, members went on to be in other bands like Dance Hall Crashers, Leftover Crack, Rancid and The Transplants

    Very good, Lex and Brad! This is ska-punk. Mixture of reggae/ska and punk and does have a little rap vibe. This is popular in California. Operation Ivy is from California. Many ska punks (and punk rock in general) came out of southern California, many of them have horns, too (ska). Lot of unity songs in this style music, BTW. Punk, reggae/ska shares the same kind of ethos, culture. Usually political (anti-authority), uplifting, DIY ethos, for racial harmony, unity, civil/human rights, liberty/individual freedom, brotherhood, etc. And this is also skate punk. Skate punk is all kinds of punk style. Skaters also listen to other genres when in the mood like reggae, ska, hip-hop, alternative rock, metal, etc.
    SoCal ska-punk bands that yall know are No Doubt (Gwen Stefani), Sublime, Goldfinger, Rancid, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, etc. Some yall have reacted to as well. Others from other states, too like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Streetlight Manifesto, Less Than Jake, etc. Sometimes The Clash, too. There was a fusion, because groups like these ( punk bands, reggae bands, ska bands, etc ) were underground music for a long time and played at same smaller clubs, shared the same audiences. The bands started influencing each other. Mostly in California (Southern Cal and Northern Cal/Bay Area/Eastbay) , DC, NYC, and the UK.
    Here's a good description here as well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ska_punk

    There were so many good punk bands in the 80s and 90s that had diverse sounds. Op Ivy was really good. Another band I listened to back then was The Big Boys. These guys even covered Cool and the Gang Songs. Hollywood Swinging.

    Op Ivy recorded about 45-50 songs, and just about all of them are great. Just too bad these guys didn't stick it out longer. Luckily Rancid turned out pretty well, so theres that. More Op Ivy reactions though!

    Not a huge fan of this band, but they did have some exceptional songs. Do like the fact you guys are doing this band as punk has been my thing for about 35 years-hopefully you keep diving down that path.

    The next Operation Ivy song has to be "Healthy Body" or "Soundsystem". Also the ska, dub, rocksteady, reggae vibe in punk grew out of bands like the Clash...who had a heavy influence on bands like Op Ivy and Rancid and 80s and 90s punk in general.

    • @Sweep_The_Leg_Johnny
      @Sweep_The_Leg_Johnny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i'd also throw their song "Knowledge" in there as well, a song geared more towards their Hardcore sound, but there is NOT ONE bad Op Ivy song!

    As far as My sacrifice song I'd concerned; I lost my brother and this song reminds me of him and how I lost. If you see the video, you will understand. To me, it's about listening or seeing a lost one again.
