Having watched the video...option A, B, C or D? Which one would you go for? Big up to Bondibot for creating these visualisations as it makes it easier to imagine for us United fans. Make sure to check out the full video, link is in the description.
Personally I'd go for Option C. Repurpose the current stadium for the Academy and Women and build a new stadium next to it. Option A + B would probably be the best of both worlds in terms of redevelopment and expansion, but this creates a logical problem which nobody seems to have mentioned- how feasible would it be to carry on playing at the current OT while redevelopment is done and if not where would we play in the mean time?
Also to monetise the stadium during the off-season for concerts etc a retractable roof is needed like Real Madrid have done with theirs @@robertblake1228
The land the current first team pitch is on is important. Yes we had our home on other sites before but we have been there so long now. It's the site the Germans bombed in the war and we rebuilt, the babies thrilled us there. The players that amazed us there- Best, Sir Bobby, Robbo, Hughes, Eric, Scholes, Rooney etc... It's in the fabric of our club and the Munich clock should stay just where it is. That location is part of the soul and the lore of our club and why we are special. That site is part of our X factor. We need to stay there and improve it to preserve those special feelings.
As much as I love old Trafford I would like to see a brand new stadium ultra modern 100000 plus. But as you said Sam the steel works on the roof is iconic so would love to see that incorporated into the new stadium for sure
You managed to talk nonsense twice in such a short paragraph a) Barca new stadium will not have a retractable roof and EVERYONE who has been to Spurs new stadium has not called it average, so you obviously have not. In fact the company that designed it advising Man Utd
@@robertblake1228Barca and Madrid are staying in their current stadiums 😂😂 just refurbing them. Rain helps United due to players being used to it so why would we try and stop it? Stop spouting southern nonsense
D for me. Just expanding the south stand and fixing the roof doesnt address the legroom etc in the other stands. Capacity wise, they need to look at the season ticket waiting list and add 20% to that.
From what Sir Jim has already said he wants to build an entire new stadium that makes it among the best & biggest in the UK & I think further down the line it'll be far more profitable in terms of match day revenue & with entertainment complexes built in so that families can have a good day out aswell as watch football. Also our stadium could then host many events which will bring in revenue aswell. Old Trafford has been neglected for many many years it'll need alot more work than many think. Also building a new stadium plus having hotels on the grounds & all that tackle will help with the local area creates job oppertunities etc. Time will tell
For a refurbish I'd pick A. But I'd like either a significant refurbish or a rebuild. I don't like the bedpan look either. But what if it looked like Allianz Arena - might be able to keep some of the white steel options and light it up red. Love the acoustics in that stadium - would love for the new Old Trafford to be that loud.
Like option A. Should be able to double stand size at least, push 85/90 tho. 92 thousand be fitting. Maybe a few other touch ups on exterior, raise roof, sort fan services to enjoy the experience more
If Option A is feasible with the platform over the railway line, then 100% that's the option to choose. It'll be cheaper to build an extension over one stand than a full stadium. Also If the south stand mirrors the north stand + quadrants that will easily add 15,000 capacity, which means OT will hit the magic 90,000 capacity, whilst keeping with the heritage and character of the current stadium. It ticks all the boxes.
lol imagine living in those houses with that stadium towering over and turning your back yard into giant cave. They have to build a new stadium, it's the only viable long term option with the least amount of impact on football operations!
Option A - you can replace the roof with a new one. Option A looks nicer, keeps culture and is cheaper. You can use the other land for “regeneration” (make your money)
Option C I’ve never been sentimental over bricks. Old Trafford has been rebuilt after WWII. It’s changed under the Martin Edwards/Gill redevelopments…. They’re essentially 100yo plus footings and infrastructure. If ur redeveloping the area then a New Stadium is a must. The design should incorporate the stylings, features and statues/memorial tunnel of the old. And when they reduce the old Trafford for use by the academy and women’s team I’d love It to look just like a mini OT of today… But a less sterile non bedpan 100k seater mega stadium is THE Statement of we’re back!
If you want to reclaim the title of biggest football club in the world, you need to build something bigger and better than both the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu. It also needs to look wild. Forget keeping or copying the roof on the current stadium. You either build bigger, better and new or you don't bother. Of these options B is the best because it looks space age but I think the architects should be let off the leash and build something completely crazy. Something that's never been seen before. I know some fans are worried about tradition but remember, today's cutting edge is tomorrow's tradition.
Option E 100,000 capacity Retractable roof and pitch! Current stadium. Downsize to 20-25k Then build hotels, restaurants and flats around the current stadium.
Love Old Trafford. I first went there with my uncle in 1967, and was a regular visitor up to joining the RAF in 1976. I would be very sad to see it go, but I feel that clinging to the past is not the way forward, and a new ground is the best way forward I think. having said that, none of the above suggestions fill me with awe!
Let me start by saying I’ve never been to OT. I’m an overseas Red since 97. I’ve planned many times but life and circumstances caused changes (birth of kid, job change, pandemic). If feasible I lean toward option A. The look of OT is iconic and every football fan knows the stadium just by seeing it. Modernize the interior. Upgrade facilities. Increase capacity and build up the South Stand over the railway with a platform that allows easy access. If a new stadium is chosen I think they should keep the look of the roof structure. The white steel is just part of OT. I hate the bed pan and bowl looks.
I remember Fergie mentioning this years ago exactly the same as that. Going beyond the rail track and having a station to drop off fans underneath, and I believe he said this would increase OT to 88k
Option A; North stand is 25.5k, south stand is currently 11.5k so assuming they are mirror images, that adds ca. 14k and would bring the stadium just shy of 90k.
Option D, it's more financially reasonable for looking forward in the future. Modern stadium that can look as upgraded version of Old Trafford, not completely same but visual aspect of it would work.
1:59 according to the tour guide in old Trafford when I was there 25 years ago he said It’s not because of the railway it’s because of the sunlight. The grass needs sunlight and a roof would block the majority of sunlight. So they can’t build on that section the stand. The Aviva (Landsdown road ) Dublin has a train going through the main stand. The Amsterdam Arena has a duel carriage way going under the stadium The opposite side was developed for Euro 96 and without the corners gave an additional capacity of 12,000 supporters. Each corner would give an additional 2500. So the capacity would grow to be 91000 making it “the Wembley of the north”
if you extended the south stand replica to the north and SE and SW quadrants then you’ll achieve over 90,000 capacity. if you then add a 3rd tier on the west and east stand and the quadrants you could achieve close to 100,000.
The original reason for the design of the current roof spans was so that the roof could be jacked up when the south stand was eventually built. So the rain water would run to the back of the stand and supporters on the third tier would be able to watch far more of the action!
Redoing the Main Stand to mirror the SAF standvwould take the capacity to 94k, however the seating wouldn't be to modern spacing, redoing the seating to modern specs would then reduce the capacity back down to around 82k x
I personally think a massive regeneration of the whole area is what will happen and i think it will take several years to get to that point. new stadium, hotels coffee shops apartments and retail units.. Basically disney land with a football stadium instead of a rollercoaster. Somewhere for tourist to spend all weekend there and spend a small fortune. To become more commercially profitable you need attractions not just once a fortnight on matchday.
Sam, all of these options will lead to a significant ticket price hike. With a refurbishment, there's still going to be stuff that breaks because it's old. We need to rip the band aid off and build a new stadium and have the infrastructure around a new stadium to create more revenue to create more money to comply with FFP / more signings.
Option A if it's doable. A new stadium is now my preferred choice. I've come to terms with that and if they are able to down size OT for the womens and U21s etc then i'm happy with that
The only one possible is D. We as a club would lose too much game day revenue that it's not fesible unfortunately. As a 52 year old, I believe we need a completely new Stadium, rather than having to put even more cash into OT on maybe 10 yrs again only for other issues to pop up. We as fans deserve a New Stadium. Cheers Sam.
The only reason Jim Ratcliffe favours building an entire new stadium instead of renovating Old Trafford is because he knows the United fans are against giving naming rights of the stadium away to a sponsor, if he builds a new stadium, it has no history and he can name it whatever he likes.
I think they will build a new one next to the current ground. It will be about 85000 capacity to begin with and room to expand over the following summers while Old Trafford is taken down and the area rebuilt. That way, the cost is spread out and the team is in the ground earlier making the club money.
I love the idea of keeping the pitch and building a new stadium around that, but extending the south stand and replacing the roof isn’t enough if we are to be best in class. We need to sort out that drop off the pitch has since it was raised for undersoil heating - it’s a death trap. Hospitality and executive boxes need to be better (only for generating the income we need to pay for the work). We need better/decent tv screens and the seating needs to be better spaced as it’s too cramped in some sections. I love Old Trafford and still think it looks great - went in December and it’s had a fresh lick of paint, seats are being upgraded and still better than 80% of the stadiums in the PL, but we need to think of the next 50-100 years and match the standard of the tier 1 stadiums elsewhere in the world.
Seeing how much it rains in Manchester, or in England as a whole. An overhauled stadium needs a retractable roof. Most new modern stadiums have it. Option A+B, with a retractable roof, and not looking like a bedpan, would be my wish.
Option D. Build a 60-70k seater stadium next to Old Trafford on the car park like in option C. Build the new stadium with downsizing and repurposing in mind. This stadium becomes Man United's home stadium for a few years then the current Old Trafford gets knocked down except for the old tunnel. And a brand new 100,000+ seater stadium is built on the same site with the pitch in the exact same location. And as you said with a white steel roof. Once it's built the other stadium gets downsized and repurposed for the academy and youths etc
Only a new stadium makes sense. Expanding south stand to match east & west would only add a maximum of 10k seats. Adding those extra seats, whacking a new roof on, and a new facade, and tarting up the concourses would cost about £1b. There would be about 8 years of disruption where parts of the ground are shut down, or maybe the whole ground shut down. When finished increased revenues would cover financing with a bit to spare. A new state of the art 100k stadium would an extra 20k standard tickets plus 5k exec/premium. Cost £2b. Increased revenues would be 3 or 4 times any financing costs. The space where the old ground is, and around the new stadium (the "stadium district" part of the Trafford Wharfside project), could then be redeveloped into a fan park, bars, eating places, community stuff etc. A new mini stadium for the ladies & youth team can be built somewhere on the plot. None of this wider project can be done with the old stadium where it is. There's only one reason for just redeveloping the old stadium rather than a new stadium, and that's our emotional attachment to the place. The question is, is that emotional attachment to the old ground more important than all the advantages that a new stadium would bring to the club, the supporters, and the wider community? I'm glad I'm not making the decision.
The extension on the North Stand gave 11,500 additional seats. Each quadrant added 4000 seats each, 8000 in total. Thats 19,500. If you replicate the same for the South Stand and quadrants you get a Capacity of 93,810. Todays official capacity is 74310. If you lifted the roof and add the same height as the South Stand all around the stadium you will end up with a capacity easily over 100 000. Potentially overgoing Barcelona's new stadium at 105 000 capacity.
I just can't see the refurbishment working with the houses and railway so close to existing site. It has to be option C (the new stadium) as they then have a blank canvas to work with.
Those 3D animations and designs are pretty cool to see. I say, keep Old Trafford and build a new stadium next to it but with a design that's closer to OT and not these bed pan ones.
What if old trafford was turned into a museum/mall/concert or auditorium?...the museum would serve as a memory to charlton, best,Fergie and all those amazing memories. I'm sure it would bring in a revenue year round
I think they will ultimately go with a rebuild, OT has a lot of issues try to expand architecturally (rail line and houses) and they could feasibly build around the existing stadium to keep disruption of games to a minimum in the vacant land.
Capacity with developing the south stand would take it to between 87 and 90k. I dont the residents in those houses would want that wall of steel at the end of there back garden
It would be alot more than 10000 more seats if you did that to the south stand. Just doing the quadrants would be close to that. A second tier on the sir Bobby Charlton stand would take it to about 98000. According to old estimates. Who knows maybe the train station could be used properly
Doing the south stand and increasing the capacity is the best short term solution, increase revenue and save money for modernisation later. Borrowing money with interest is going to cost more in the long-term.
Option A would add roughly 20k so the capacity would be around 95k, we know that for a fact because when the North Stand was expanded, it added 10k and each quadrant was 5k so when you do the same on the south side + the quadrants, it would add 20k. This is the best option imo 🙂
I think if they were going to build a brand new stadium you would think they would actually have a roof. Marvel Stadium (in Australia, Melbourne) have a roof that opens and closes. I would love to see a big club in the Europe to do that. No more wet football matches 🙌🏼
At present The Old Trafford Stadium is still incomplete & needs is an upgrade of the SBC stand & East & West quadrant to be completed first before you can sort out the roof. This Stadium has a lot of potential & can be one of the best stadium in Europe if not the world with the original design cos it has authentic & character with the potential capacity of at least 90K, all it needs is an refurbished & some TLC. Take Note: The Stadium Expansion Must Not Exceed the rail way track! Man Utd 's Old Trafford 'The Super Bowl of Stadiums known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' is unique & a Colossal of a stadium.
I'm a little confused about the homes across the railway England is so far north that I would assume the sun is usually going to be more south. Those homes are on the south side so they should still get sun
Just build a new one. Refurbishing will cost about the same as building a new one, and will keep some of the old issues. When benfica decided to build the new stadium there was the proposal of refurbishing the old one. At that time the refurbish and building a roof all around would cost more 50M€ than just start from scratch.
A+b for me the roof needs to be raised so when you are in the top tier you can see the rest of the inside of the ground . They need to buy up those houses and build a tunnel for the train make it more accessible for the fans to get into town. Lastly make the Stretford end one massive stand. Mufc20
We want an Expansion to approx 90K capacity, Modern refurbishment & a Levelled Retractable New Roof! There's an completed stadium design on WHF!🔰@UtdWesleyy with a comment stating: So apparently we are looking at an expansion of Old Trafford. It’s been talked about for years but put off because of the complications around the south section of the stadium but if we do manage to do it…🔴 2 Tier SBC Capacity: 88,000+ We're sure that can be achieved with minimal fuss by observation cos its already laid out going by our walk around the stadium experience. Take Note: The Stadium Expansion Must Not Exceed the rail way track! Worth a view, please share!
Retain SBC South as an historic connection. Listed status. Poss' retain pitch for a smaller stadium, so current OT would be partly retained. New OT 105k, best in world. Raised pedestrian walkway to Manc city centre to get 1,000's in/out. Call it the Red Walk.
I think the last one will be best for us and a brand new stadium and just redevelop the old Trafford stadium for the women team would be the better option in my mind

Maintain the buildings intergrity and the face of it. Option A for me. If you can refurbish the south stand then keep A
I've been to OT on the train many times with station outside the South stand. Think it shut in the 80's
Option D, but not that design for the new and current OT.
Got to be able to keep some history.
Maybe build a hotel etc there.
I just can't see the refurbishment working with the houses and railway so close to existing site. It has to be option C (the new stadium) as they then have a blank canvas to work with.
A refurbishment of Old Trafford would need all the seats ripping out and redoing for more leg room so Option C for me, to take us into the future.
Complete new stadium for me Its all about the next 100 years and beyond History is History looking forward to the new future is a must......
Id like option A or something similar but brand new world class stadium as there is no space in parts of the ground miles away from the pitch
For A + B you would have problems with the planning permission for the stadium as there would be a lot of objections to it
Option D is the long-term solution and the future of United.
The issue is the seats, these need improving as it's so cramped.
I would go for A if it also meant changing all of the seats.
Option A keep old Trafford as it is but upgrade stands on all 4 corners
New 100,000 seater state of the art show the football world United are back
1 major problem with option b
Where are we supposed to play when the renovations are taking place?
The problem with the steel you like on the roof is that you can’t then add a sliding roof
For me i would choose option D , i think a brand new stadium is what you need .
If it were to be a refurb, then it would definitely have to be option A out of those 3, I certainly don’t like the bed pan if it’s new or refurbished
Option A would add roughly 20k so the capacity would be around 95k, we know that for a fact because when the North Stand was expanded, it added 10k and each quadrant was 5k so when you do the same on the south side + the quadrants, it would add 20k. This is the best option imo 🙂
Option A, Old Trafford is iconic, we don’t need a brand new stadium, refurbish wait we have.
Option D new build and with old Trafford being down sized and the museum stay there etc and youth and women’s teams being played there 👍
I'm a little confused about the homes across the railway
England is so far north that I would assume the sun is usually going to be more south. Those homes are on the south side so they should still get sun
I like the 1st one but I think a new stadium might be the way forward
Just build a new one. Refurbishing will cost about the same as building a new one, and will keep some of the old issues. When benfica decided to build the new stadium there was the proposal of refurbishing the old one. At that time the refurbish and building a roof all around would cost more 50M€ than just start from scratch.
A+b for me the roof needs to be raised so when you are in the top tier you can see the rest of the inside of the ground . They need to buy up those houses and build a tunnel for the train make it more accessible for the fans to get into town. Lastly make the Stretford end one massive stand. Mufc20
First one is amazing. Keeps the character of the current stadium.
We want an Expansion to approx 90K capacity, Modern refurbishment & a Levelled Retractable New Roof!
There's an completed stadium design on WHF!🔰@UtdWesleyy with a comment stating: So apparently we are looking at an expansion of Old Trafford. It’s been talked about for years
but put off because of the complications around the south section of the stadium but if we do manage to do it…🔴 2 Tier SBC Capacity: 88,000+
We're sure that can be achieved with minimal fuss by observation cos its already laid out going by our walk around the stadium experience.
Option D is most suitable for me but well lets wait and see
My heart says A+B but the time frame, reduction in revenue and lack of suitable ground to play in while the works done makes it unlikely
Option D For me, i like the idea of a new stadium
D for me plus it will be a 100 thousand seater plus shops restaurants cinema many thing.
Plus easier transport home for home fans and away fans.
Option D imo a new stadium and we can use the Old Trafford space to then build a smaller and modern stadium for the women
Interesting
