    UK and Australia are not scared to put average looking people on TV, the US has to beautify everything including places where the characters live and work and by doing so they take the tiny bit of realism remaining out of everything and make it harder to like.

      +Craig Brainimpact We Aussies don't really have a choice. Anyone with a shred of talent and looks jets off to the US to be the next Jackman or Hemsworth.

      you're right, for me I actually prefer when the actors look average and more human because it's easier to relate with.

      +WeirdArtChick5 Yeah the inbetweeners had really average looking guy and that made it much more easier to relate with AND made their talent more appealing. honestly fell in love with Jay and Neil they were so blunt and hilarious, but sweet in real life.

    • @LJY08
      @LJY08 8 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      +Craig Brainimpact I totally agree. It's the combination of average looking actors (making them more believable and relatable), and the more racy humor (not being watered down to fit with puritanical American ideals).

      I totally agree. One of the things that added a touch of realism to the U.K. Skins was the fact that all of the actors, Nicholas Hoult, the actress who played Jal, the main characters, were, at the time, amateur actors who were actually born and raised in Bristol

      Exactly. All Scandinavian countries cringed SO hard when the Americans did their own version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Sweden made a top quality, fantastic and awesome movie based on the books. It really captured the characters, and the feeling of Sweden where the story took part. Because of the books' success, of course the Americans had to make their own movie shortly after the original Swedish one! I was told it's because they don't like subtitles! They changed the characters and story in a bad way, it was horrible. Such a disgrace and a huge insult to Scandinavian crime stories.

    I am a big Kath and Kim fan. I did not realise that it had an American remake but, I am horrified to think they would attempt one. The humour of the original is so intimately tied to regrettable aspects of suburban Aussie culture from the early 2000's. It's value came from reflecting the absurd yet everyday quirks of its environment, and so much of that is specific to Australia. To translate this to another culture, country or even time would be nearly impossible. Especially because the US is very similar the temptation is to not change much which just means that the jokes which made the show funny are all lost. It was doomed from the start.

    but when they try to copy British shows they just get it all wrong, the more toned-down, gritty, earthy style of british writing does NOT mesh well with America's slightly more energetic, over-the top presentation,
    for instance, Skins worked in the UK, because through all of it's somewhat contrived or shark jumping moments, the tone was spot on and it felt grounded.
    american TV is definitely not as good at being laid-back and grounded.

      I get the point you're trying to make to the other poster, but it's a bad one. Everyone knows arse and ass are the same thing. Maybe a better example would be fanny lol

    • @shinmusashi44
      @shinmusashi44 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Arse is no more true than ass. Words change over time and are given new meanings. Even the word arse wasn't always used. Before that I'm sure there was another word. Plus we have so many words for your butt. A slang word is just as valid as a "real" word. Half of the words we use today are slang in origin. The English language is always changing, but for some reason English people forget this. English language isn't even the same language as old English. Pronunciation,spelling,grammar has always been changing in English.
      I really don't know why you have a problem with a slang word. We use them everyday and don't even know it. Did you know that we don't have a name for the front of our hair? Both fringe and bangs are slang words for the front of our hair. Neither is more correct than the other. English people think they are correct with fringe and Americans think they are correct with bangs. but both are slang and have become everyday use. But neither are "real" words as you put it.

    British humour and American humour are just too different, they're incompatiable. American shows that copy the British formula never work, for example, one of the few American adadptations of a British comedy that did work was the Office: The first season tried to copy the UK version and it was shit, afterwards they just turned it into a typical sitcom set in an Office and it was good. Americans just can't do British humour.

An American version of a British TV show is basically a dumbed down version of the original. I say this as an American who has been watching British TV since 84'.

      I think the biggest thing that pissed me off of both was it was tame :/ Like WAY too tame. Inbetweeners like seriousy? That would have been a pg 13 film. Although I like American programmes such as The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Friends,it seems the U.K can't have a programme of it's own without the U.S remaking it. Nothing can beat the u.k versions of programmes such as Skins, Shameless, Life On Mars and The Inbetweeners as both countries have a different sense of humour and both the U.K and the U.S should leave each others shows alone, the Brits don't go remaking your shows, as they are fine the way they are and it would ruin them. I like both countries shows and they don't need to change.

    USA butchered Shameless - if you've ever seen the UK original version, there's no way in hell you'll be able to like the USA version. David Threlfall is the only person who can pull off Frank Gallagher in the true gritty fashion that makes him who he is. The characters on the US show just aren't believable like the UK cast was - there's just no comparison. The biggest difference is that Americans use actors with zero talent, because they mainly pick people based on looks instead of their acting.

    I know it seems like we speak the same language, but there are many cultural differences between Great Britain, Australia, and America. The humor is completely different in other countries, even those that share a common language. I fell in love with British TV, especially Red Dwarf from watching late night PBS, and I love the IT Crowd original version because it is uproariously hilarious. I don't think television execs over here get that comedies from the Commonwealth would do well broadcast for American television on its original merit. Yeah, there are some subtle differences in language ("bog" instead of "toilet," "snog" in place of "kiss"), but that's why they invented Google. The American version of the Office is probably the only (maybe) successful spinoff of a British show. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to stomach a Red Dwarf or IT Crowd remake for even one episode. I'm glad there are ways to find the original shows. Oh, and Top Gear U.K. previews much better cars.

      First of all I'm an American. A citizen of the United States of America. Deed, I also do not understand why there are American remakes to BBC shows. BBC America is probably one of my favorite channels. I believe it's more about money than anything. The average American understands what we perceive as the British accent just fine, and the "slang" is no barricade of any sort. Kevin, in the manner of which you are speaking it would seem you have made no attempt to adequately survey Americans with a non ignorant mind set. Just the fact of how worked up you got has me concerned. I suggest counseling.

      It's basically two different cultures. Most television stations are afraid to air the original product because they feel they won't get the cultural wit. Good example here is between Kath & Kim and it's American predecessor. Most Americans wouldn't understand most of the jokes about the two being daggy Australian bogans, and thus, they tried to remodel the show to fit the American culture.
      Of course, in doing this they almost always kill the characters' personalities in the process.

      And "Are You Being Served?" Was remade in America and Australia. Both never held a candle to the original British version. With the Aussie version, it was nice to see John Inman return as Mr Humphries, it helped it a bit, but I like to think if it ain't broke, why fix it? There's something to be said about the British humour, it's the show's essence. Once it is removed and/or replaced, you notice the show really does lose a lot in the translation!

      I thought both were terrible. I though the pilot was amazing, but then they replaces the best actors for "cultural diversity" and it was just sad to compare to the pilot. I'm south-Asian and I wish they'd sacked the crappy south-Asian lady who played the ghost. Also, the vampire in the pilot was totally dark and conflicted, then they replaced him with a good looking guy. So the rest of the series was crap compared to the original pilot.

    The intro said it all, trying to cash in on shows that have been successful for a quick buck. They probably all would have done better if they had taken the concept of any of these "remakes" and just derived their own show from it. Not try imitate it word for word and attempt to match unique characters. Only thing I don't get is Shameless isn't on this list too

    • @shinmusashi44

      Cause the humour might be different or don't know the actors. England remakes American shows too.

    • @DavidVille

      But that makes no sense.
      I watch TV shows and movies made in Spain, Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela, etc... and is not the same Spanish I speak or same culture, but I do understand them...
      I also watch Shows and movies from England and I understand their humor (I don't get french humor) So I guess for a Native USA English speaker, undertanding British English should be kind of easy.

    When will the Americans leave alone British TV series? It seems that most of the shows on this list r from Britain, and it really annoys me that big American networks cancel series that are original and well received and then dumb down foreign TV shows that weren't theirs in the first place, mainly British shows. As someone from Britain I am frankly annoyed by this.

    • @Rondel56
      @Rondel56 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The worst atrocity was firefly, the show was going to be great and fox screwed it over big time, and on a lesser note (thankfully the fans demanded its revival) futurama met too early of an end in its first run.

    • @itcrowdx
      @itcrowdx 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because all big American tv corporations don't know when to stop because they're only in it for the money. I wish they would stop too even though I'm American it's not fun to watch if the remake us bad.

    • @shinmusashi44
      @shinmusashi44 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Less than 1% of US tv is remakes of British shows. You act like half of the shows over here are remakes of British shows.

    • @Counterbalance_
      @Counterbalance_ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well said. I'm not from the UK, nor am I from the U.S.A., but, frankly, it's annoying as fuck that people don't even know that there are original British shows that are far, FAR, better than all those horrible U.S. remakes. Since those shows are failures, the U.S. TV companies try their best to sell it to other countries, including mine (where that shit fail, too, by the way), because money is all they care about.
      It's not just about remakes, by the way, it's also about stealing ideas. "Sherlock" is a good example of the recent TV show ideas thievery. As soon as BBC started showing Sherlock Holmes *modern world* adaptation, the U.S. immediately started filming "Elementary", which is... right, Sherlock Holmes modern world adaptation! Even if it's not the same, the idea is still stolen and the show is not nearly as good as the BBC show. For me it's just another rip-off, not good enough to hold a candle to the original idea. It's just a money maker... as intended, of course.
      I don't watch TV shows much, but British TV shows will always be the best for me, no matter if they've got any remakes or not. Even as a person from a non-English-speaking country, I've got no problem understanding them, so, I'm pretty sure, there's something else other than "we don't understand their humour!!!" and crap like that.
