Russia has energy security, food security and nuke security - this three alone makes it a military Superpower.
However, what Russia lacks is being an Economic Superpower, this alone do not make Russia the overall Superpower.
Infact Russia is more powerful than all of Europe combined, which has Superpowers like France and UK in it, but UK is just having an honorary tag of being a SuperPower right now and France alone with all its might cannot fight Russia and win in a conventional war.
USA too has energy security, food security and nuke security but it is also an economic superpower, which makes it a true and complete Superpower. Till date, USA controls the global economy with its bigtechs and petrodollar. USA has been phenomenal in keeping wars away from its homeland due to its geographic advantage but has involved the rest of the world in wars not allowing the others to focus on tech development and economy.
Russia started off with a wrong side in the 20th century under a communist dictatorship which isolated it from controlling the global economy even more and it led to decades of stagnation of the market and its potential - so Russia went up as a military hardware manufacturer but come to technological progress - it is very bleak.
Now, Europe had a very big role of getting USA (despite being isolated geographically) its markets both within Europe and in the West Asia due to former British Empire connections in various geopolitical spheres, but Russia did not have any such partners so long it remained under that atheistic socialist rule.
Just a decade later of falling from being a military Superpower, Russia stepped up its economic game, found trading partners all over the globe and slowly inched towards political stabilization in post socialist state and setting up powerful allies within Asia to help it when Russia decides to upset the Global order under US dollar.
Now, come to 2022, Russia is rewriting the global order - well the US-Europe group might have again isolated it, just like in Soviet era but this time Russia has found military and economic giants in Asia to partner with economically - its India and China. Both these nations in Asia is what France and UK is in Europe and are more capable militarily.
Though India and China has recent enmity due to that communist dictatorship in China, but France and UK had enmity throughout history and that rivalry is not yet dead but have compromised on each other for time being for sum total development post WW2. India and China are historic friends with no history of fighting each other until the rule of Communists and Atheists in China.
So moral of the story is, it is not just the heartland's control which will determine who would be the ultimate SuperPower, it all depends on which nation have a Communist, Socialist rule and which do not. Socialism, Communism and Atheism never did any nation any good anywhere. Don't vote up such Socialist based political groups anywhere, not in India neither in East or in West - it will only lead to downfall.

@Mememaster369 GG the USSR did, not the Russian Empire. The USSR created autonomous republics for the natives, which is why they survived. And the Russian federation preserved that establishment even after the dissolution of the USSR. Practically the natives would all be gone if the Russian Empire survived and the USSR never existed. Besides, Siberia is still predominantly European in demographics anyway, with White European Russians forming over 80% of the region's population.

Your wording is wrong. NATO as organisation can't expand. Organisation consist of many members. Only when all members agree, the new member can be accepted. But only under condition if that member choose choose to join. Noone can be forced or coerced to join. Countries of Europe's North, Center and East choose to join, because of historic experiences and constant threats from Russia.
