    Why don't you measure to 47 mm with a ruler? I'm still learning, but I often wrap it to 48 mm or 47 and 1/2 and my teacher has shown me to measure with my ruler.

      Patricia Van Hoose that’s a great question! those are good measurements too, it depends on your altitude and shape, the tubes I use are charugi 2+ 47mm some people like longer or shorter staples, also some staples are fatter or more narrow. You need to change your measurements to compensate. Some reed makers like to tie over the staple one wins as well so to 48 usually. If you mean to the top of the reed; I measure to the top at 73mm which just happens to work with my shape of cane. Some people use a wider or narrower shape and tie at a different lengths to accommodate. How long have you been playing the oboe?

      My teacher says to measure the top of the cane to 72 mm. I have been playing for 4 and 1/2 years. I just turned 74 yrs. In my youth, I played clarinet for 10 years and after marriage I played in a recorder group. But I always wished I had tried the oboe. Now that I'm retired, that is what I am doing.

      Patricia Van Hoose that’s awesome! Good luck! I wish you many happy oboe experiences!

      I also measure at 73 at the beginning and check with another staple to see if its tied right

    Is it common to go straight to the blank scrape right after tying the reed, or is it better to let the blank dry out for a day? Also, thank you so much for making these reedmaking videos, they have been really helpful considering I can't meet with my teacher in-person right now!

      totally understand the quarantine era is tough! There are different opinions on this, I do both methods depending on my schedule. It doesn't make enough of a difference to loose sleep over :)

    I find that when I am tying on, the blades often get overlapped the wrong direction. How do you make sure they get overlapped the right way?

    • @OboeFiles
      @OboeFiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if you notice on the video I actually overlap the blades first when measuring the length of the cane and again as a double check as I pull the first few winds, I actually unwind and start over if I notice the blades begin to close out of position when wrapping. With patience and practice I am sure you can get it :)
