It's surprising, astonishing or whatever it is that in little over a month, it will be 40 years since I saw Steve Hillage play at Glastonbury.
Curiously, I can still remember it...
Also surprising etc is that it's around 40 years since first watching Tim Blake play with Hawkwind.

There 's a CD (looks unofficial but great recording) of Steve's Glastonbury Fayre (1979) around,I have a copy (I was there, Michael Eavis stopped his set as it was 12.30 am,he'd promised the 'locals' to stop the music at midnight, Steve was none too pleased,threw doen his guitar & said he wouldn't play Glasto' again.Every year I've been there since Steve's been there System7/Mirror System/Steve Hillage Band, perhaps the recent Steve Hillage /Gong Band will be there this year. I love all the different guises Steve's recorded as.
And what a night that was.
It's 44 yrs since I saw Hillage play Hyde park, and much of that is still burned into my memory.
@@IOW70 I worked on the Glastonbury 1979 festival for a couple of months and even helped load Steve's gear on stage for the set. As you mention the set was cut short. The reason for Steve's anger was because the main stage began to run late from the very first band's set. Steve was telling the Stage manager that if the change overs between bands didn't get better then with out a doubt his set would have to cut down but cutting it down too much could be avoided if every band cut one or two songs from their sets. This was dismissed and Steve could see how it was going because the stage was a shambles with too many hangers on getting in the way of the band crews. The stage crew was mostly made up with old hippies that had worked on the 71 festival and were there to party. OK in 71 but in 1979 this was a fully licensed affair with sound level measurement and limits. Pilton had already complained that the festival had started early when in fact it was Steve's band rehearsing in one of the barns but using a new Turbo Sound monitor rig including side fills, we all said, "if that's got them complaining what are they going to be like when the stage PA fires up!"
In the end he had to cut his 90 minute set down to around 45 mins. Steve had prepared a very special set for that gig and so was understandably upset.
He didn't return until the 90s. I went back in 81 and 82 and Michael Eavis even asked me (a nobody) to ring Steve hand ask him to come and play.
First heard Hillage in 1972 when Khan opened for Genesis at St Albans Civic Hall (70p admission fee). Been a huge admirer ever since.
That sounds like one of those shows that had the potential change lives.

Surely it's only a matter of time before Moonweed and the Submarine Captain are back in Gong where they belong. Just watched a video of him playing with Fabio Golfetti the recent Sub Captain in the new Gong line up so let's make it happen!!!!!!!!! This is so gorgeous, thanks for posting
