Joe, I think this is the best lesson I ever heard. Thank you for teaching us some crucial tips not only to learn and be fluent in English but even to make ourselves better human beings. This lesson seemed like it was meant for me, especially when you tell us not to be perfectionist. That’s a big limit, a big mistake of mine. I always try and be perfect as for what the vocabulary, the accent, the fluency are concerned and I get angry when I can’t be. I should change my attitude and feel lighter even if I make mistakes. I have no practical reason to study English. Passion is my only motivation. Perfection is not attainable. We can only improve and do the best that we can do. Thanks for reminding me. ❤️

What a great message! I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been studying English for over 30 years; in the meantime, I managed to get a C2 certificate. I even lived in London for some years before returning to Italy. Nevertheless, the essential aspect is that I’ve never ever lost the joy of learning the language, in all its subtleties and nuances. It’s never failed me the passion for getting closer and closer to how a native speaker would have expressed in the different situations. Mine’s just a humble opinion, but I find what you do very interesting. You’re in another league. Well done, keep it up!
What a wonderful message in this video! I really think that people should apply this tips not only in the case of learning a new language, but also in other contexts of life. Nowadays, poeple live "quickly" and don't really enjoy the journey, only want the result and want it immediatly. Dear Joe, I discovered your videos a couple of months ago and it was an enlightenment! I'm learning a lot and having lots of fun, with you...and James 😊 This video is genial!!! Is a perfect synthesis of your method and philosophy of teaching. I totally agree with everything you are saying here! I developed my opinions about learning languages during many years of my (quite long) lifetime. I'm very fond of studying languages. Yes, to have passion! to learn as children do...stop looking for perfection....to enjoy😮 the process! and yes, first of all, to communicate and express ourselves! I was studying English (school)grammar when I was a child.And then I was practising English in many ways, travelling, reading, working, with foreign colleagues, with friends, singing....being a musician of classical music, I find there are so many affinities between learning a language and practising an instrument, piano, violin....voice... lots of training ( never ending!), great patience, constance, no fear to do mistakes....and how much joy, if there are passion and love ! I can speak enough " fluent ", surely not always everything is correct, but I wanted always to communicate and I think I did..And now I'm improving a lot and going deeper in the English structure and mentality with your lessons. I think that the most important thing is the motivation. In this way you have a goal and this is really important. I try to immerse myself in the language (video, music, TV serie) and I force myself to speak almost once a week. I attend a cineclub, a bookclub and a cooking class in English once a month. I don't care if there are mistakes sometimes. The more you chat the more you become fluent. In Italy we say "Sbagliando si impara". Your channel is great and I love your italian accent. 😉😉
I really appreciate your tips and your honesty, learning is an endless process but improving with the right mindset is definitely possible. I liked the comparison with children, they're the best learners by far. In my experience I realised that learning is much easier when you have a face to face conversation with a native speaker because you have no filters, you get to know his pronunciation, the expressions he uses, the way he talks, you basically have a much better feedback than you might have on a video chat, the audio is filtered that way and makes it harder to understand.

Personally, I enjoy listening to online radio stations from english speaking countries, and I think that this can be very helpful for becoming more fluent. Well, to be honest, even though I often can't properly follow the fast speakers' pace, at least I try to get used to everyday language and different accents.

I was a teacher for foreign students In Italian and I thing the important is to communicate, understand and speak to express the most important needs. good morning joe...yes i agreed with you of course....i always loved great britain, the first time i went to uk was when i'm 12 years for two years, on the summer with my school,i was in london....tha k for a lots of years i haven't been anymore but i was dreaming to come back in london and now every year i go to london for one week or as soon as possible, now i have fantastic friends with whom speaaking english....i'm sure that i make mistakes in speaking english, and i have a hard times understending when they speak with me, in particular on the phone....but i really don't worry...i try to learn in any way possible....i listen on youtube your videos, bbc news etc...i will not perfect but...i'm sure if i lived in london it was easier to learn faster....at the moment it is....now i want do a vaccine and i want go to london as soon as possible..sorry for writing but is also a way to practice english...thank you very much..bye

Hi Joe, I discovered your channel only recently, and enjoyed all the videos seen so far. As for this particular video, I wanted to thank you for the valuable tips, or we might rather call them "experience based in-depth reflections", since they focus on the mindset behind the learning process, and their validity is probably not limited to the field of language alone. The invitation to "enjoy the process" rather than craving for the results, matches perfectly with the advices of another English teacher I have in high esteem, and also reminds me of the ancient Roman proverb "Festina lente", that could be translated as something like "Take your time, if you're in a hurry". As you pointed out, sometimes the only "fastest way", the only possible real "shortcut" is just to stop searching for unrealistic shortcuts and to take all the time needed to cope with what we aim to do, and probably the best way of doing it is leaving apart the obsession for the arrival and enjoy each step, developing a taste for it. I think sometimes we find ourselves in the contradictory condition of being "lazy perfectionists", aiming for perfection but at the same time too lazy to make what is required in order to reach it. More than this, obsession for perfection, as you pointed out is, quite paradoxically, what holds us back from the chance to improve. This reminds of another proverb: "Sbagliando s'impara", which is not an invitation to indulging in one's mistakes, but rather the statement that if we want to put ourselves in the condition of learning something, then we are required to allow ourselves to make some mistakes, since they are likely to happen, and not allowing it, is not allowing learning altogether, in some way...

I totally agree with everything you are saying here! I developed my opinions about learning languages during many years of my (quite long) lifetime. I'm very fond of studying languages.
Yes, to have passion! to learn as children do...stop looking for perfection....to enjoy😮 the process! and yes, first of all, to communicate and express ourselves! I was studying English (school)grammar when I was a child.And then I was practising English in many ways, travelling, reading, working, with foreign colleagues, with friends, singing....being a musician of classical music, I find there are so many affinities between learning a language and practising an instrument, piano, violin....voice... lots of training ( never ending!), great patience, constance, no fear to do mistakes....and how much joy, if there are passion and love !
I can speak enough " fluent ", surely not always everything is correct, but I wanted always to communicate and I think I did..And now I'm improving a lot and going deeper in the English structure and mentality with your lessons.

I think that the most important thing is the motivation. In this way you have a goal and this is really important. I try to immerse myself in the language (video, music, TV serie) and I force myself to speak almost once a week. I attend a cineclub, a bookclub and a cooking class in English once a month. I don't care if there are mistakes sometimes. The more you chat the more you become fluent. In Italy we say "Sbagliando si impara". Your channel is great and I love your italian accent. 😉😉

I really appreciate your tips and your honesty, learning is an endless process but improving with the right mindset is definitely possible. I liked the comparison with children, they're the best learners by far.
In my experience I realised that learning is much easier when you have a face to face conversation with a native speaker because you have no filters, you get to know his pronunciation, the expressions he uses, the way he talks, you basically have a much better feedback than you might have on a video chat, the audio is filtered that way and makes it harder to understand.

I love English. I'm trying to learn English with my own. It's very hard, sometimes I think impossible. I don't speak, I listen my voice when I read, I listen your voice in your video. Personally, I enjoy listening to online radio stations from english speaking countries, and I think that this can be very helpful for becoming more fluent. Well, to be honest, even though I often can't properly follow the fast speakers' pace, at least I try to get used to everyday language and different accents.
I agree with you about the process of learning a foreign language . I was a teacher for foreign students In Italian and I thing the important is to communicate, understand and speak to express the most important needs. Step by step you can improve the new language also the vocabulary and the fluency. Thank a lot for your important and fantastic lessons!

good morning joe...yes i agreed with you of course....i always loved great britain, the first time i went to uk was when i'm 12 years for two years, on the summer with my school,i was in london....tha k for a lots of years i haven't been anymore but i was dreaming to come back in london and now every year i go to london for one week or as soon as possible, now i have fantastic friends with whom speaaking english....i'm sure that i make mistakes in speaking english, and i have a hard times understending when they speak with me, in particular on the phone....but i really don't worry...i try to learn in any way possible....i listen on youtube your videos, bbc news etc...i will not perfect but...i'm sure if i lived in london it was easier to learn faster....at the moment it is....now i want do a vaccine and i want go to london as soon as possible..sorry for writing but is also a way to practice english...thank you very much..bye

Hi Joe, I discovered your channel only recently, and enjoyed all the videos seen so far. As for this particular video, I wanted to thank you for the valuable tips, or we might rather call them "experience based in-depth reflections", since they focus on the mindset behind the learning process, and their validity is probably not limited to the field of language alone.
The invitation to "enjoy the process" rather than craving for the results, matches perfectly with the advices of another English teacher I have in high esteem, and also reminds me of the ancient Roman proverb "Festina lente", that could be translated as something like "Take your time, if you're in a hurry". As you pointed out, sometimes the only "fastest way", the only possible real "shortcut" is just to stop searching for unrealistic shortcuts and to take all the time needed to cope with what we aim to do, and probably the best way of doing it is leaving apart the obsession for the arrival and enjoy each step, developing a taste for it. I think sometimes we find ourselves in the contradictory condition of being "lazy perfectionists", aiming for perfection but at the same time too lazy to make what is required in order to reach it. More than this, obsession for perfection, as you pointed out is, quite paradoxically, what holds us back from the chance to improve. This reminds of another proverb: "Sbagliando s'impara", which is not an invitation to indulging in one's mistakes, but rather the statement that if we want to put ourselves in the condition of learning something, then we are required to allow ourselves to make some mistakes, since they are likely to happen, and not allowing it, is not allowing learning altogether, in some way...
