The buses went on red because they had a transit priority signal. The white vertical line above the red light that turned on was the transit priority signal.

You're both partly right about the relationship between Canada and the UK. Canada is a former colony of the UK and was one of its territories. But, ever since 1867, Confederation, ee became our own country. However, we're still a member of the British Commonwealth, along with countries like Australia and New Zealand. You did the right thing with the city bus, because you're not supposed to pass one when it stops, but some selfish people make up their own rules and do it anyways. That building you called a castle I used to work in. It's one of the Parliament buildings. That intersection where the Quickie store was on the right is the street i once lives on, Augusta.

"King Edward's Castle" is the East Block of the Parliament. It doesn't appear in the video, but the building right next to it with the clock tower (called the Peace Tower) that's set way back from the road is the Center Block. It's undergoing a huge remodel right now, but normally that's where Canada's House of Commons and Senate meet (The House is temporarily set up in the West Block and AFAIK the Senate is temporarily in the old train station, which is now simply called the Senate Building). And if I was traveling into downtown from the west, instead of taking regular city streets, I would've taken the Ottawa River Parkway (Google Maps tells me it was renamed to the Kichi Zibi Mikan last year to honor the Algonquin tribes that lived there before the French and British showed up.).

48:13 the reason why the buses get to "blow the red light" is because they have a dedicated priority signal (the little white bar on top of the right-side signal) that lets them skip the queue to get into the turning lane first at the next intersection

The type of people that claim Ottawa is boring/nothing to do are the type of people that need to be spoon fed excitement. Aka they themselves are lame

Ottawa has world-class museums, art galleries, etc, thriving markets, beautiful neighbourhoods, amazing architecture, such events as the Tulip Festival, a beautiful canal, excellent restaurants, jazz festivals, Gatineau, the RCMP Colour Ride, etc. I often find people who complain about places being boring are boring people.

Some observations from a long term resident or Ottawa. You managed to drive through some of the oldest neighbourhoods in Ottawa in your drive through. The city has many diverse modern neighbourhoods. You comments about homeless people are off base. Ottawa has less than 1500 homeless people total out of a city population of over a million in the greater Ottawa region. I've lived in Ottawa for 45+ years and can count on one hand the number of 'crack' heads as you call them. Ottawa is a world class city. Clean, safe and with a high quality of life. Come here in the winter and you will find nearly as many people out walking around.

Amazing. These nice folks drive aimlessly through the city, somehow miss or fail to acknowledge the site of parliament and then call it “exploring!

I guess we all do that, comparing a new city we visit to ones we're familiar with. I do the same when i go to the States, by saying this or that city reminds me of Toronto, or Montreal, or Ottawa, etc...

  • @danavharris

    Ottawa looks just like Jacksonville.
Ottawa is bigger than Jacksonville in land size. It is big spread out ass city. Those type of cities always have areas that are not taken care of. You can drive around for hours in a city of that size.

Problem with Ottawa is its "boring" because its the city stuck between Toronto and Montreal, its competition is unbeatable. Overall tho ur right its a chill city. Has a Washington DC/Philly vibe

Drives down a highway that looks like any other highway in North America: "This looks a lot dumpier than Toronto".
So what I gathered is that you just put it in your mind that a few older homes that are 70-80 years old must mean that the whole city is "dumpy" or trashy. Ok there bud. Way to generalize.
Drying clothes and keeping a bike on a balcony is apparently trashy. You really got it in your head to just pick out random things as trashy. Absurd.
The buses did not run the red light. There's a priority signal on the traffic light at 48:05

A big part of why the roads look so beat up is the extreme weather swings. We can go from -30C in January to +30C in July with all the precipitation that comes with it. Takes a major toll on the roads.
