  • Sped up digital drawing process of a cartoon of a cranky stork on the Wacom Cintiq 22HD tablet.
    Sketching, inking, coloring and printing it on a big banner.
    It is not a tutorial but probably gives a fairly good understanding of the process.
    Created by cartoonist Jeroen van Rossum on a Wacom Cintiq 22HD interactive pendisplay. Sketched in Autodesk Sketchbook Express 2011, inked in Adobe Illustrator CS 5.1, colored and finished in Adobe Photoshop CS 5.1, layout in Adobe Indesign CS 5.5.
    Thank you for the awesome pianos in the background, Mr. MacLeod!

      Yaroon's Cartoons I have a question. Is it kind of like a computer monitor? Like do I plug it into my computer just like a monitor?

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Yes, you just plug it in the DVI or VGA port on your computer like any other monitor and you also have one USB plug. You can set it up as your only monitor, but if you like you can use it as a second monitor too.

    Great video! thank you very much . I have a XP-PEN Artist 24 Pro graphic Tablet with screen 24", it is indispensable for drawing cartoons,props and backgrounds. It's like driving a car without tires if you try to do digital art without one. nothing is as intuitive as drawing on to a screen , they pretty much last forever, its a good investment and they look the part.

    Thank you for your video, just ordered a cintiq 22 for my daughter, want to invest and support her in her art, and have been watching her frustrations but perseverance on procreate, so looked into these. Totally couldn’t afford it but she’s worth it. Now I’ve discovered she’ll need a computer to run it! Absolutely gutted! Just assumed it would be like a tablet dedicated to artwork. So watch out dads! Gonna have to hide it until I can get a computer. 😞

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. And you need a good one too! And then the software. For an all-in-one solution, you better go for an iPad Pro or IPad Air with Procreate and an Apple Pencil. On the other hand, for a professional setup nothings beats a Cintiq connected to a good PC.
      No doubt she's worth it ;-) And it's still a cheaper hobby than horses! :-D

    • @Adhdad1
      @Adhdad1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Yaroons what software do recommend,? she really wants to do animation. I live in rural New Zealand, I think a horse would be cheaper 😂

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Adhdad1 I work with Adobe CC, that contains all the software you ever need (Photoshop for drawing, Illustrator for making vector images, After Effects and/or Animate for animation + much more) but that is a € 50,- per month subscribtion and a lot to learn. See: www.adobe.com/nz/creativecloud.html
      Very nice alternative drawing software is Clip Studio Paint, which I use alongside the Adobe software because it is so good.
      This you can buy so you don't have to subscribe. (Only the Android and iOs version are subscription based).
      The Pro version is all you need for drawing and only costs about € 50,- once. For animation you need the EX version which is around € 220,- www.clipstudio.net/en/functions/
      Clip Studio is very complete and in my opinion the best drawing software currently out there. Much more tailor made for drawing than for example Photoshop.
      You can download a free trial to check it out. There are many tutorials out there and before you purchase... a couple of times a year it's half off. So if you wanna save money you could start with the free trail of 3 months and wait with buying until there is a promotion going on. If that promotion is later, you can buy PRO first and wait with the uprade to the EX version untill its cheap.
      But, considering where you live... I would save me all that trouble and give here the horse instead. :-D

    I draw all the time but can't seem to get into doing digital art with a tablet. I don't know... it always felt awkward as hell to me. How does this type of thing feel compared to using a plain tablet?

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +FireBomberBassist You mean a tablet like an iPad or so? You can't compare it. With this it's just the pen that's drawing so you can rest your hand on the screen. And the tip of the pen is pressure sensitive so it feels very natural. This thing feels as natural as pen and paper, but only the best pen and the best paper you can get ;-)

    • @FireBomberBassist
      @FireBomberBassist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That answered my question. I can only seem to draw on paper well. I have a wacom tablet that is just a little square pad and pen, have to look at the screen while I draw it feels awkward as hell for me. I'm considering purchasing one of these. :D

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +FireBomberBassist I know what you mean. I had a Bamboo tablet before this one. I found that digitally drawing had a lot of benefits once I tried it out. Especially inking in Illustrator instead of with a real brush and Indian ink. But I couldn't - correction - wanted to get used to the drawing on my desk while looking at the screen before me. I found it too awkward, just like you. And I got lost every time I rotated the tablet like I often do when I'm drawing on paper. That's why it didn't took long before I bought the Cintiq.
      The only little thing you might have to get used to is that there is some space between your "paper" and the tip of your pen from the plexiglass screen. But that probably won't bother you very long. I don't even notice it anymore.
      I think you 'll love the Cintiq!

    • @FireBomberBassist
      @FireBomberBassist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes the bamboo is what I have right now. It actually makes me mad trying to draw on it. LOL It seems like everybody else I see online has got used to it except for me. They get to save a bit more money using it over a cintiq but it drives me crazy. I seriously want to throw it.

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +FireBomberBassist Haha! You really need a Cintiq. Which you will not want to throw (if only because of its price) :-D

    COUGH... magic wand tool ehm.. COUGH

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you take a better look at it you can see that I use it. But only after I colored in the big color planes. It's because the magic wand selection never goes far enough so I have to expand the edge every time to make sure the color goes all the way under the lines. That would be: Select artwork layer. Click with magic wand. Go to select-modify-expand, give in the extra pixels, select coloring layer, fill with color. And that over and over again... I thought in this case this was faster, a more natural way of working and I had more control over the shape of the paths.
      About that cough... tea with honey and quit smoking ;-)

    • @Walter5850
      @Walter5850 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, great that you mentioned that, I honestly have a great advice for that hah.
      You can create an action for Select > Modify > Extend (5px or whatever)
      then you can bind that action on one of your Wacom buttons, or to a keyboard key combination like ctrl+1 for example.
      And for filling in the layer, you can press alt + backspace. It's a very quick shortcut.
      Basically using those things you can cut down your coloring time drastically if you'd like,
      but of course it's down to a personal preference, and I myself sometimes like to fill stuff in by hand :D

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Walter, that's wonderful advice! Very useful. Thanks!
      I use different methods all the time to see what works.
      I also color a lot in Illustrator lately with the Live Paint tools, that goes even faster but it depends on the kind of work.

    • @Walter5850
      @Walter5850 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, and also you don't have to select a linework layer in order to select certain parts, you can just stay on your "colors" layer and tick the "Sample all layers" checkbox on your magic wand tool. That way it will still only select what you want instead of an entire canvas :)

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I know that but I'm not sure if I knew it in 2013 ;-)

Any recommendations for the Wacom I should get? Would love one with a screen size if at least 19" bigger is better... Thanks for any tips.

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derek Jacobson Hi Derek, thank you for your compliment and subscribing. Cintiqs are the models you need for drawing on screen. The only Cintiqs larger than 19" are the 22", 24" and 27" models. (All Wacom Cintiq models: www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-displays) Ofcourse the bigger the better when you 're talking about working on them, but the 24" and 27" models are huge so you might wanna take the space they occupy in consideration. I got the 22HD. It's a great machine and... it fits on my desk :-D.
      About your Mac Mini, I don't know if it has the right connections, maybe it's no problem at all or maybe you need an adapter of some kind. I'd ask Wacom to be entirely sure: www.wacom.com/en-us/contact

      I paint the colors on a seperate layer under the black lines. When applying the shading I can easily select these color planes and my shading will go a few pixels under the black lines.
      This is necessary to prevent the edge of the shadow not reaching all the way to the edge of the lines which will make a small line occur between the colors or shades and the lines.
      This can also be achieved by selecting between the lines with the magic wand but then you have to widen the selection by a few pixels every time you make one.
      By painting the color planes a little wider than the space between the lines like I did here, I don't have to do that again when I apply the shading.
      But this is not the only or best way to do it. You can go for auto selections and widen them if you like that better.
      And... I could have done this in Illustrator too, but then I'd have to bring the Illustrator file into Photoshop on seperate layers and because in the end it's all rendered as pixels anyway (because of the airbrushed shadows) I chose to do it all in Photoshop.
      It's just a choice but there are other ways. Sometimes I do color in Illustrator first, like you can see in my Christmascard video: th-cam.com/video/e5J9-zssXk8/w-d-xo.html
      Every now and then I try a different approach, see if it saves me time or costs me extra. In this case it didn't matter much.

      Max Hi Max, that's is because each program has its advantages. I really like the preset pencil brushes in Sketchbook. Illustrator smoothens out your lines when inking + it's vector so you have an original which you can use at any scale, Photoshop is great for coloring, airbrush effects and all the rest.

Just compare the specs and see if the difference in price is worth the difference in specs. Oh, and you need a good PC or Mac. These are not stand alone machines.

    what is the best resolution for printing like you did ? .. and the video is great i love how the final job in the end :D

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mohamad,
      I always try to stick to 300 dpi for heigh-end printing.
      In this particular case the sketch was made in Sketchbook Pro at 1600 pixels wide, which isn't much but enough for an underlay in Illustrator.
      I did my inking in Illustrator because it creates vector lines. Vector lines are free or resolution and remain sharp no matter how much you enlarge them.
      After that I imported the Illustrator lines into a Photoshop document document with a resolution of 100 x 100 cm at a resolution of 300 DPI (11811 x 11811 pixels).
      You can do the coloring in Illustrator as well but I used Photoshop because of the airbrush tools which are ideal for shading. You need the large resolution to prevent pixeling.
      After that I imported the Photoshop file into Indesign and made a PDF of it with a size of 130 x 200 cm at 300 DPI. While the flattened Photoshop file was 116 MB the PDF turned out as a 16 MB file.
      At this size a resolution of 200 DPI would have been sufficient, but I always go as close to 300 as I can so it looks crisp even when you are standing real close to it. The sharper the better!Just keep an eye on your filesize so the printer's equipment doesn't start to smoke ;-)
      (More than 300 DPI is overkill, you aren't gonna see the difference)
      And thank you for your compliment!

    Really nice cartoon drawing and video :)
    I am really interested in knowing about the using of different design programs for creating this cartoon.
    I think Sketchbook pro is an amazing program for sketching because of its variety of drawings tools and Illustrator is ideal to vectorize but I would like to know what for Photoshop and Indesing are used. in this creation.
    Thanks

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miguel Angel Cano Garcia Hi Miguel, thank you for your compliments.
      About Sketchbook Pro and Illustrator you 're right. Sketchbook is the best for a natural sketching feel, and Illustrator is for the smooth vector lines.
      The main reasons I use Photoshop is because I like to use layer masks, the airbrush tool for shading and it can manage a much greater resolution than Sketchbook Pro. Indesign is the best tool for any lay-out job. Of Course I could have used Photoshop to make this but once I have imported the cartoon in Indesign I can move it around as one flat file which makes designing a lay-out easier and faster and scaling does not affect the original resolution.

    Your cartoons are absolutely lovely. Can I ask why you don't use Photoshop for sketching also? Does Sketchbook feels more natural or what? I am starting on the art rows, i have tested Photoshop but i don;t feel very comfortable with it and I looking for alternatives. Great stuff

    • @Yaroons
      @Yaroons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ciprian Amarandei Hi Ciprian. Thank you for your compliments! Yes, I think Sketchbook feels more natural for sketching. Or, not necessarily more natural but certainly better/nicer. I love Photoshop but even with special brush sets, it's not the best choice for sketching, at least for me it's not. For coloring, especiallly airbrush effects it's great because of it's airbrush tools and many ways of making selections, masks, lots of layers etc.
      Recently, I started using Mischief for sketching instead of Sketchbook. It's vector based and got a really nice feel to it.
      I am using it here: th-cam.com/video/Y13ZcY7o0hA/w-d-xo.html and I have made all the drawings in this short animation with it: th-cam.com/video/COFKRwpaCdw/w-d-xo.html
      It's definitely worth a try. It's cheap, they have a 15 day trial available and there is also a free version. I think you 'll like it.(No, I am not a shareholder ;-) )
