The old mixes only focused on Gotye's chorus. They hardly bothered touching anything else, the least of all Kimbra's part. That's why they sound so tone deaf. Even when extended, the old "remixes" anchored around the chorus & refused to fully adjust the whole song to, y'know, _actually mix_ the two.
Somebody That I Used to Know always carried that feeling of nostalgia, loss, and longing for me, and remembering the tragic fates of the Yellows just make it hit extra hard.
The original version feels like when someone broke your trust and hurt you. The trap remix sounds like when you're still healing and still furious at them for hurting you. This version sounds like you've finally gotten over it, you've finally gotten to a point where you can look back on all of it and have peace once more in spite of it.
@@Aeon_Is_Near I'm sorry... it's a miserable feeling. Just know you've still got people who love you and that this is only a temporary part of your life. You _will_ heal :)
Don’t worry Aeon, as Skull Knight of Berserk says, “Struggle, Endure, Contend, for that alone is the sword of one who defies death” Life may bring us down, but that is life seeking to make us strong, even if she brings us to our lowest point. We struggle, endure, and contend, as that is sword of one who chooses life
Keep on swimming, even if the stream runs hard against you and you have to jump waterfalls, even if you risk jumping into the claws of a hawk or the jaws of a bear; With all those odds are stacked against you, you are stronger than even that. If you fall, your death will carve the path for another to live on in your place, ride forth and take that chance as many have did before you and your legacy will live on.
You know something really interesting about this remix's juxtaposition of the grandeur in Megalith Agnus Dei with the poignant intimacy of Gotye is that the emotional sharpness in the latter becomes charged with the epic-ness of the former. I actually really like that idea; one of the things I love about, say, Lord of the Rings is that it attributed cosmic significance to the individual's personal rejection of evil -- there is an idea that the Internal struggles and pain may well be genuinely of grand importance after all. With lyrics as deeply intimate as "Somebody that I Used to Know" being set to a backdrop as grandiose as this, you get the sense that the profound angst in this relationship's collapse does indeed bear cosmic significance -- maybe only for the speaker's mind, at least, if not for literally the whole cosmos. And yet for those subjective experiencers, the mind is the cosmos and its sorrows are experienced as cosmic. Plus there's the interesting feeling of how the grandiose theme is also a finale track of some kind, a kind of "victorious conquest". There's again some dissonance with the intimate sorrow in the Gotye lyrics; the grand conquest becomes bittersweet, and perhaps the glory one revels in over the defeated enemy is not so revel-worthy after all, perhaps there's tragedy woven into it all. It's all very interesting
Thanks! Your version was a big inspiration for me, it means a lot to have you swing by and leave a comment. Excited to see who picks up the torch next and elevates it even more!

Can anyone who knows music theory actually explain why these songs genuinely sorta fit together? Maybe it's just a really high-effort mix, but to me it's almost like there is some compositional similarity
Most music follows a similar string. Low and slow, grandiose with extra vocals and instruments in the center, and still high resolution. In this mashup, they use that to help elevate the lyrics. If you listen, around the time both singers are singing together in Somebody I Used to Know, the choir and instrumentation has also picked up, matching the musical emotion almost perfectly. As someone said above, there's also the musical juxtaposition. Gotye's piece is an intimate song about losing someone he loves, while Megalith Agnus Dei is the song that signifies the end of the war. Gotye is lamenting the loss of his love, while Agnus Dei laments the loss of everyone who had to suffer in the war. If you ignore that it's a love song, you could also look at the lyrics as a description of the relationship between Mobius and Yellow 13. After all was said and done, Mobius and Yellow 13 weren't just strangers anymore. They knew each other's planes, calsigns, and war records, and when Mobius shot him down, even in game it's bitter sweet. Just like the bittersweet ending of Somebody I Used to Know. In the end, the other is gone, and all Mobius and gotye have, are memories. When songs have a similar emotional beat, it's easier to mash them together Anyway that's why I think the two songs fit togetherz both from a musical standpoint and a literary standpoint.
I'm not sure if anyone's said this yet, but while re-listening to this lately, I've realized that this works as a commentary on the Continental War: Gotye is Erusea and Kimbra is ISAF. - "You didn't have to cut me off" refers to Erusea (Gotye) getting sanctioned and its products getting boycotted following the refugee crisis - "Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing" refers to when Erusea was formerly part of the Usean Allied Forces in AC2/Legacy. This also gets further expanded when he later sings "Now and then I think of when we were together / Like when you said you felt so happy you could die / I told myself that you were right for me / But felt so lonely in your company" because the rebel forces had managed to take out the entire territory of Usea up to the Allies' final base in the Twinkle Islands. Since that's Erusean territory, at that point, it's likely Erusea's armed forces were the last left standing, and they and the rest of the Allies had to go so far as to re-hire Scarface Squadron. Did Erusea foot the bill? Maybe, maybe not, but Erusea was all alone at that point. - "But that was love, and it's an ache I still remember" is poignant because the memory of the rebellion is still fresh when Ulysses hits. The final debriefing of Legacy mentions how the end of the rebellion marks a period of armed peace, and Ulysses forced all countries to work together in creating, defending, and operating Stonehenge. They had to be together at that crucial moment. - And then we get to ISAF's (Kimbra's) point of view. In fact, they see it differently. "Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over / But had me believing it was always something that I'd done" are two lines that wouldn't have made sense in this remix until AC7 revealed some crucial information to us. There was a war in 1991 we know very little about. In that war, Erusea was so badly beaten by whoever they were fighting that the royal family was ousted and the country reformed into the Federal Republic we know in 04. We could extrapolate to believe that Erusea was fighting its neighbors, as it is wont to do, and its neighbors may have helped install the new government. Then we see the rebellion, then we see the refugee crisis, and then we see the outbreak of the Continental War. Until Erusea's takeover of San Salvacion and Stonehenge, maybe the countries that would later form ISAF were reconsidering their treatment of Erusea with all of the sanctions and boycotts. - Then the invasion happens and ISAF forms, giving Erusea the ultimatum to leave San Salvacion and Stonehenge before war breaks out. "But I don't wanna live that way / Reading into every word you say" ISAF is tired of having to read between the lines with Erusea. They're tired of the political runaround. "You said that you could let it go / And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know" Could this be referring to Ulysses, or Stonehenge? ISAF hoping that Erusea could have let go of the troubles from Ulysses, or that Erusea could have let go of the idea of controlling Stonehenge and they wouldn't be hung up on the facility? Or maybe that Erusea could have let San Salvacion go? Or the refugees, or the boycotts? This can be taken in very different ways. - Erusea responds with the chorus, repeating its earlier statements. They maintain that ISAF didn't have to cut them off, treat them like a stranger, stoop so low, or even "change your number". Erusea decides they don't need this treatment and ISAF is now "somebody that I used to know". The war begins.
I'm glad the audios are now in sync. The other version always irked me that that one section of the song was not aligned together. This has graced my ears.

This is actually a very g breakdown of the parallels in both songs even though I'm sure that it's not intended

I'm glad the audios are now in sync. The other version always irked me that that one section of the song was not aligned together. This has graced my ears.
this is literally one of the best songs ive ever heard
This is the best version, thanks. Awesome stuff.

I'm commenting because I'm honestly shocked that someone who's not from the late 90's is starting with AC2

Bro I’ve never even played the games but DAMN HOW DOES THIS PLANE GAME HAVE THE BEST SOUNDTRACK EVER
It doesn't. It's top tier but saying it's the best is snapping a metric fuck ton of games out of existence.
@@mechanomics2649 its a hyperbole
@@mechanomics2649you should play Ace Combat bro, or at least listen to the soundtracks trust me they’re THAT fucking good, so much so one was featured in the opening ceremony of the freaking Olympics👌
I recommend you listen to the Ace Combat tracks like AC4 (Megalith is from that game) AC5, AC Zero, and even the latest game AC7. If you can also try the games, the storylines of many of these are pretty great (at least most of them) 👍
