August didn’t know it was a queer relationship until the video. He is jealous immediately that Wilhelm is choosing to like the company of a commoner instead of trying to ingratiate himself with third year aristocrats. August has serious FOMO, a modern day Iago. I think when he realized that Wilhelm is in bed with a boy and a lower class one, that was the huge shock to him. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been so shocked because he already knew it was Wille’s bedroom. The shock was in learning who the partner was. For a constantly interrupting cockblocker, he missed the obvious. The younger kids all knew by then.
He didn't see anything romantic. Their friendship bothered him. When August discovers that the person Wille is having sex with is Simon, he is completely shocked and slightly terrified by what he has discovered. He was convinced that Wille was with girl and generally that Wille is straight

A lot of people noticed stuff. Just not August bc he's eaten up by jealousy, and because he's projecting his values & desires on Wilhelm he's sure Wilhelm and Felice are hooking up

Nah, the other kids have definitely noticed, and not just Sara. Both boys and girls have conversations about it away from Wille and Simon. The boys have known since the horror movie night. The students in school are divided into those who openly/quietly accept their queer relationship and those who are pissed that Wilhelm and Simon are mixing social classes, not that they’re actually into each other. The hate Simon gets online after the sex tape is released is as a class traitor, and the criticism Wille gets is for going with a commoner who doesn’t know how to be discreet. That’s the same reason the queen is frustrated when she meet Simon in person. The students have known since the horror movie that these two have a thing and it’s explicitly stated in S2.

That's why we never see homophobia and Simon's father (an addict, involved in illegal sales, a middle-aged man from a small town. A rather perfect candidate for a homophobe) is completely okey with his orientation. No one sees a problem with their orientation. The problem for them is the class difference...
