I'm a metalhead, but I grew up on John Denver and I absolutely have a very warm and very special place in my heart for him that will remain into eternity. His voice is incredible and truly unique. This song has been a favorite of mine since I was maybe 3; the vocal melody in the chorus was always so beautifully intoxicating to me. I still desperately miss him...
He is still very much alive on youtube and in our hearts. The legacy he left will live on and one we can share with our children and hopefully our children's children. l
I thought for sure he was lip-syncing but I played the recorded version side by side and found differences. It it's actually live and not pre-recorded for this appearance, it's amazing.
I have followed John since 1976 and have seen him live in concert 11 times, HE Sounds so much better live , Than his recordings, Especially when it's just him and his guitar 🎸 Far Out
I love this song especially the melody but I remember I really didn't like name Shanghai, remembering that my grandmother a missionary died at the hand of the Communist in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution.
Sorry to hear about your grandma The first time I heard this song was at a John Denver concert in Cleveland, about 1980 and he explained he was in Shanghai missing Annie and they had these breezes blowing off the water. The moon was out and he realized that the same Moon that he saw Annie would see as well. He suddenly felt closer to her. Side note: I was in a long distance relationship at the time myself and my girlfriend was there with me at the concert. A few months earlier I had written her about the Moon that I saw she would see this 3 hours later.
