***** I just received my set of parallel pens. But they bleed on regular paper. Do you use a special paper, like parchment paper, or water color paper? Did you sharpen the nib on your pen?
DINO IL CAGNOLINO I usually use heavier papers designed for mixed media use. Watercolor paper works well as does marker paper. Haven't done anything to the pen nib.
With that music I was waiting for the alien to come up and eat his brain.

By the way, is there any tips you could share with me about how to be make a good vertical line when writing ? I mean, for example, when I write the alphabet `P`, the vertical part never ends up good ! ☹ Even if I draw lines as point of references !
Lot's of practice. Vertical lines can be a pain and I have trouble with them too sometimes. Try and keep your wrist straight and use arm movement to make the stroke.

The paper is Canson Mix-Media sketchpad. It's what I use most of the time. I also use watercolor papers and marker paper.

You should name this hand - something in the Fraktur-Batarde spectrum? I love this style of serif, like the torn heel of a green twig. The other ragged edges suggest bark too.

Just bought the full set of pens - curious on your thoughts when it comes to ink and these pens - is there a sweet spot with a JHRH 1670 or a Noodlers over the stock Pentel inks when it comes to flow, coverage, opacity, etc?
+Stu LeBeau The stock inks seem to be pretty opaque and cover well. Noodler's inks vary quite a bit. I really like the 1670 inks. I've found that I like to add water (in the pen) to most of my inks. Seems to make the differences in flow a bit less pronounced. I also like the layering that I can get with thinned inks.

2. How you put a different kind of ink into the parallel pen (I'm buying one and heard it has special cartridges and blahblahblah)
It's just a 98lb (160g) mixed media sketchpad. I have another video on this channel that shows one way to refill the ink cartridges.

+Susan Elizabeth Yes, that is correct. Generally the smoother the paper the cleaner the line. Although, when it's too smooth, control can become an issue (for me at least). Velum is really nice to work with.

I mostly use Strathmore 400 series drawing paper these days. Occasionally Canson marker paper. Watercolor papers work well too.
How did you fill the parallel pen with this ink? Does Pilot make empty cartridges that you can fill with your own ink?
I have another video on this channel that shows how I refill my pens. I don't think they sell empty ones. I just reuse the ones that came with the pens.

Hi! I am using the same pen with the stock ink cartridges. however I cant seems to do those "snake tongue/ tail" at the end of the stroke . I can see your ink is quite wet comparing to mine, is it because of the ink or paper? And are you dipping your pen? Thanks
It works with the stock ink as well. Just tip the pen up onto the corner of the nib while writing. It takes some practice and there will be some skipping occasionally, but it should work with any ink. You can dip if you like as well (I don't here). Dipping into another color gives some nice effects.

Don't search for a 'font' - that's a computer word processor artefact. Search using the words Italic+gothic+hand. There are heaps of videos on TH-cam.
I recently bought parallel pens. And the pilot inks are very expensive. Could you suggest me a better replacement for the ink?
Any fountain pen inks should work. I mostly use Diamine, Noodler's, and J. Herbin inks.

How would you describe the pressure you're using during your heavy downstrokes?

+Bryan Jernigan It's a semi-transparent ink. When Pausing at the bottom of a letter (usually) the ink pools a little and gets thicker in that area which causes it to appear darker.

when you come here after watching GouletPens' videos on Back to School Shopping you realise that that is supposed to be a heavy duty highlighter and not a "calligraphy pen" XD I have seen people using fruits as calligraphy instruments though!
SVT -stan I think these are primarily made for calligraphy, and the ability to use highlighter ink is secondary

Study the construction of the basic alphabet first. Get comfortable with the letters. I still have letters that give me trouble sometimes. Google images is a good place to search for reference and ideas. For example, search for "calligraphy a" and you can see a lot of variations of that letter. Mostly, it's just a matter of constant practice.

how come my pen never does that
I rarely keep the pen flat on the page. The corners of the nib get just as much use as the flat.

Try rolling up onto the corner from the flat side of the nib. I get skipping and ink loss on the corners occasionally too. Ink and paper can make a difference. I've found some inks to not flow as well and leave the corners pretty dry.
Make sure to keep the nib free of fibers and dried ink. There's that little flat plastic piece that comes with the parallel pens. Run that between the nib plates a few times. Should help with ink flow.
