  • Sound Transit is introducing a new fare inspection process for passengers starting Monday.
Fare Ambassadors will be checking passengers for proof of payment at Link stations as part of the first phase of the rollout. During the first phase, fare-paid zone inspections will occur only on the 1 Line, at downtown Seattle stations at different times, and will be expanded in later phases, according to Sound Transit.
Sound Transit officials said thousands of dollars of potential revenue are being lost as only 55% of riders are estimated to be paying.

That 55% of current riders paying seems generous. The majority of people I see don’t tap anything or buy tickets at the machine. I doubt that many people are buying one time tickets on their phone.

oh please, the homeless and drug addicts will continue to ride without paying. maybe clean up the trains and put turnstiles and the "fare ambassadors" at each station instead.

As someone who grew up with BART, I can tell you this system is far to liberal. With BART, you swipe you card to get access to the platform. It's a man trap. I'm pretty sure that is what the Sky Train does in BC as well. Just makes more sense to me. I have been stopped and asked for my ticket before and always feel harassed, because if you had a better system you wouldn't require the manpower to inspect and enforce.
I also wouldn't be handing out warnings, if you are on the train without paying, you should get a ticket and leave it up to a judge to mitigate the penalty.
That is how you let the public know you are serious and since minors get loaded Orca cards, the only people taking advantage are adults!

Light Rail costs taxpayers $189,000 per running foot to build. Chances are it will never operate profitably.

This is not fair, sound transit needs to be free for all !

So how do you propose we pay the expenses to run it. We're running out of taxpayers which means we're running out of money. So what's your solution??

The very essence of public transportation is that it should be free or extremely low cost for riders. Once a system is created, very little revenue is generated from fares and the system operates, regardless of how many riders use it. On a related note, Metro, for decades has chosen to increase fares during Peak Hours, which is the exact opposite of its intended purpose of reducing the number of cars on the roads.

The fee from car tabs has so far exceeded the cost of building and operating the system that they could run it for free for twenty years with its current revenues. Even if no one registered a car for twenty years, the system would not go broke. They are currently using the revenues to pay for other things unconstitutionally. The money by law is supposed to only pay for building and operating sound transit.
