@@gw6667 the fact you put y'alls in that pedantic comment is hilariously unaware. Or it would be hilarious if the whole comment wasnt so tone deaf as an unneeded addition to a coversation about an awful hatecrime/terrorist attack.
Hearing that opening reminds me of Conan O’Briens opening after the Vegas shooting. He talks about how when he got to work, he was fine until he realised that his head writer had a file for him containing everything he’d said about previous mass shootings to review. And his heart broke as he asked the public watching “When did it become the norm for a late night comedy show to have an actual file about mass shootings, and no one blinks an eye?”
1:45 hearing the shooter be referred to as a terrorist was strangely comforting. As if someone was looking at me and holding my hand and saying “I need you to know that you aren’t the only one who understands the intention behind attacks like this. I need you to know that I see it, that I hear it, that I feel it.” Just a reminder from the past that the hatred of people like me isn’t just a “difference of opinion” to be tolerated and accepted. Someday I hope we won’t need messages like this. I hope it happens in my lifetime
Can you imagine being a John Hancock Rep needing to present to John Oliver and his team. Under no circumstances would I want to do that because it would inevitably end up on their show. 😂
Wow, Lennon really went crazy with the extended version.... I can see why he kept it short. I doubt the Beatles would have been as prolific with lyrics like those.
I doubt retirement will still be a thing when I am old. If it is it will be unaffordable to the average person. There is already hundreds of stories of people being pulled from retirement now cause they can't afford the cost of living. I still have over 3 decades till I'm at retirement age. And thats assuming we haven't blown our selves up.
I love how when this episode first aired, I was a university student not giving a shit about finances And now rewatching it, I'm like, "Hmmm yeah okay time to start Googling on how to throw money into bonds I guess"
ill be honest, I was right wing back in 2016, ( never was right wing on anything social politics wise, which is part of why I had a hard swap from right to left) and I remember hating John jsut because he was left, not for anything else. it saddens me that i sided with such an awful side and contributed to where we are. I wa spurely sold on the " drain the swamp" while opposing the establishment dem that is Hillary. I was sold on hitting the reset button in government and honestly the rage bait stuff and "owning the libs" and realing against the bleeding heart, that was appealing to me in my early 20's. now i've spent my years in the covid era actually learning about policy and actual reasons to support a side. and I find myself very very left. I hope we can beat trump again. We have a lot of work to do.
No worries, mate. We're all just trying to better ourselves, one issue at a time. The fact that you spent the time looking into concepts you didn't understand yet and started figuring stuff out is in of itself impressive.
Im more the opposite. I used to hate Trump in 2016. I bet Hillary heavy. I was happy when Biden won But im Team Trump vs kamala. Hes won me over, hes a funny fvcker
Surprised he didn’t mention the fact many of the blood donor volunteers in the immediate aftermath of the hate crime were denied because archaic laws prohibiting gay and queer people from donating
Thank goodness that Pulse tragedy opened the floodgates of gun-law reform, which translated into law enforcement reform, which trickled down to eventually getting money out of politics on a large scale. America is so great.
Can't say it enough, but J.O. is a real human. You could feel his emotions at the beginning of the episode talking about that shooting. For the record, John, your show is far from stupid.
Thanks for supporting human rights, John. Didn't need the reminder that Hillary biffed the election, though, John. And I'm never going to be able to retire, John. Sad day.
I get that John Hancock might be a very common name, but watching this as a non english native, Fallout fan, has been real weird haha. Like if suddenly there's a guy named Clark Kent robbing people of their money 😅😂
Not a common name so much as both the financial company and Fallout are referencing the same John Hancock- one of the founding fathers who is mostly known for the fact that his signature on the Declaration of Independence is twice as big as everyone else's. Definitely not someone most non-Americans would be familiar with.
A very good video... I think the hope that the world would be a better place combined with agency to choose is a strong argument for many I would guess....
*Formality and Presentation Versus Education and Political Secrecy* I think the title sums it up nicely. Reality. I think leaders should have limited budgets concerning vanity both material and concerning social neurosciences. They’re like something out of a Roman Colosseum, the Parthenon, or an Egyptian Pyramid. And how about putting something of actual educational value into the universities? I’d get a better education at Waldenbooks.
What an episode... the start... and the finish. Wow. I appreciate everything y'all do to educate folks. I wish you were more Left but I'll settle for where y'all are at :)
The way these clips are ordered gives me a slight headache (likely from having uploaded them separately and then published all at once). They should be published one after the other, even if it's just a few seconds between making each video public
The orlando shooting and paris attacks were a disaster. If you find yourself feeling any remorse for the poor victims spare a thought for a Syrian watching their country go through one disaster after another day after day without so much as a mention in the news for well over a decade. Episode 15.
Yeah, pulse, you know the crazy part, if these re-releases of Last Week Tonight continues, maybe we will see him address the Las Vegas 2017 shooting that managed to be far worse than this one, the one that actually make the US do a tiny progress in taking a look at gun control by banning bump stocks for firearms, which btw the US supreme court overturned in 2024, yes, this year, for not having "legislative basis", so yeah, congrats USA, keep going like this, I'll be waiting for the one that will top that in a few years, cuz if there is one thing that every single one of these re-released episodes proves, is that you fuckers clearly don't learn...
What a social media faux pas: it’s three emoji or fewer, not ‘or less’. And wading into the controversy of whether the plural is ‘emoji’ or ‘emojis’!? - bold, but foolhardy.
They didn't even cut John's messages at the start of the episode. Kudos.
I had no idea this opening ever existed. T_T;
I think it's very important in historical context. I'm glad they didn't.
Whoosh...that opening remark really got me in the feels. I hadn't thought about Pulse in some time, and it brought it all back fresh.
Oh, same. Watching it as a newly-out queer woman was really a gut punch.
Yeah, y'alls punctuation was a real gut punch too 😉

Thanks for supporting human rights, John.
Didn't need the reminder that Hillary biffed the election, though, John.
And I'm never going to be able to retire, John.
Sad day.
My retirement plan includes a collapse of society 😢 I could never even afford to have kids. Too poor to procreate.

The "financial advisor" part is still valid i know one that had experience only as a grocery store clerk. Be wary of em.

It kinda sucks thoes of us outside the us have to rely on a vpn to see these eps, even though the announcement about putting them up was viewable

So, eight years later... is Gene Hackman still alive?
