valentin echave Jim Carrey's start essentially came from In Living Colour back in the early 90s or so. His ability to morph his face, do strange things with his body, impersonate, and generally just act like a complete goof. He's proven to be against gun owners so I no longer love him as I did as a child, but I would be foolish to downplay his abilities as far as physical comedy goes. Personally, yes, I do believe he's like a modern day Sir Charles Chaplin.
+NormanMatchem I think he is far from Chaplin. I'm talking about the purpose of the comedy, we can separate comedy in two big groups, one that just makes you laugh, and one that don't only makes you laugh, and also leave something in you, it makes you think. If we substract the part that makes you laugh, Jim Carrey is empty, while Chaplin actually had something to say.
valentin echave Heheh, ironic that you say Chaplin had something to say, yet mastered silent film. I know what you're talking about though, but I believe there's Carrey films that leave you with something to think about. Bruce Almighty: Being God isn't exactly easy. Liar Liar: It's important to follow through with promises you make, and to be honest. The Truman Show: An experiment in making someone's life a television show through manipulation, and the importance of obtaining freedom to live your own life. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I'm certain there's a message in there somewhere but it's way too complex for me to know. Only seen it once, and it was years ago. The Mask: The importance of just being yourself, don't try to artificially improve yourself to be more sociable, more comical, more talented, etc. Looking at you, Lance Armstrong. Cable Guy: It's important not to obsess over things or people. Give people their space, but at the same time, be there for those who are suffering. Carrey's character had an extremely neglectful childhood to the point that he was raised by television, he needs friends, and also it's a note that it's important to be there for your children. Ace Ventura: Haha yeah, not really anything here but a way for Jim Carrey to go all out goofy. Dumb and Dumber kind of goes in the same category, but there's also elements of the importance of friendship, and to not risk such a valuable thing over something like a girl. For Chaplin, there's definitely a lot of classics. The Great Dictator: The importance of human equality and respect for fellow man. Modern Times: The monotony in being an Assembly Line worker Gold Rush: Uhhh, hilarious movie, but not sure if there was any real message to be had. Love was a factor, as I recall. The Kid: Be there for those you love. It does seem like Charlie Chaplin had arguably more profound messages to relay, especially for reflecting the times (Modern Times showcased some struggles of the Dirty 30s while The Great Dictator portrayed Hitler before America even got involved in WWII), but the 30s/40s were FAR more turbulent than the 90s/2000s. I'll also add that Carrey got his start around the early 1990s as I recall, 1994 being possibly his biggest year with The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Dumb and Dumber. All three of which were HUGELY successful, and are still hilarious. So Jim Carrey's movie career is only about 20-25 years old. Sir Charles Chaplin got his start around 1905-1910 I think. So 20-25 years after getting started, we're looking at around 1925-1935, before he made many of his big hits. There's also the fact that movies took less time to make back then, typically. Back in the 1910s, films were pumped out in the matter of a week or two in some cases. I have one on my computer called... damn, I can't remember. For the first time in this comment I'll have to look something up, though I don't even need the internet to do so. Ah! The Rounders (1914). It's literally 9 minutes long. The message in that one is perhaps the importance to not over-indulge, you know, everything in moderation, right? Mostly it's just a bunch of falling down, staggering, there's even a touch of racism unfortunately as I recall, but I don't blame Chaplin for that, it's America in the mid 1910s, you kinda need to expect that kind of thing. Anyways, Chaplin, in his lifetime, had a solid 50 years of film making at least. Jim Carrey has only had about 20-25 years, but has most certainly established himself as one of the premier physical comedians and impersonators of the day. He's practically a walking genre: an everyday man that becomes extraordinary or goes on an extraordinary journey, and I'm not just talking about the huge amount of his films that has this feature. He grew up poor in Ontario, Toronto specifically I think. I can relate to this because I'm Newfie, and most Newfies aren't exactly too well off, quite a poor island. Now though, he's turned a hobby (impersonations/body manipulation) into a profession, and has become a millionaire. He's spread happiness to many who has seen his movies, and I personally grew up seeing him as a Canadian hero. I looked up to him. As you can see, even though I no longer watch his films due to having come out as an opponent to gun owners, I still see him as a capable entertainer and actor. If you still believe Carrey is nowhere near as good as Chaplin, that's fine, to each their own, but there's one thing that I don't think either of us could deny. He's on of the best physical performers of our time, and while I think his career has taken a hit from his "heartless m*ther f*ckers" tweet to the gun owning community, I believe he will have decades of success ahead of him, and his greatest work, in all likelihood, has yet to happen. Just like Chaplin in 1925-1935, he still had so much yet to accomplish. Give it time, I believe in the future, Carrey will be looked back upon in the same legendary light as Sir Charles Chaplin.
Rowan Atkinson is THE most talented "comic" I've EVER seen in my LIFE. I am so thoroughly entertained by his blend of slap stick physical hilarity and high brow, stimulating silliness. Vulgarity and insults have NEVER been amusing to ME; Mr. Bean wouldn't stoop so low....He is MUCH to INTELLIGENT and GIFTED.
I was looking for the strings. He kinda looked like a marionette, the way he was holding his hands. Also i think Rowan Atkinson is a hilariously funny and incredibly witty comedian. Came from the Invisible Drum Kit.
Listen to me my friends,,,, this man has brought the music on the earth,, At the beginning it was just a like a scifi/fantasy only ,, |self planted somewhere deep in his mind -> then in was slowly year by year injected into ours | ,,, then some clever people has understood & gained emphaty for his vision & made someting to make it alive in reality "like the evolutionary princliples does" | yes of course some of us was first ROLFing or Rolling on That floor from that insanity & nonunderstandable nonsense of that age ? maybe some of them was thinking to burn him for the sorcerry" & then ....... . . . . . ... . something has happened.. . . . . some of us has inveted music instruments... thanks to that man, todays there is full list of music on youtube " in his situation without advertisements " ,,,,, bless that man !
