- Sinema called on Senate colleagues to take responsibility for their own decisions, and warned against bringing political theater to Arizona if they don’t want to actually secure the border
Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema delivered remarks on the floor of the U.S. Senate today ahead of the vote on the bipartisan border security bill she crafted.
The Senators’ bipartisan legislative package is the result of months of good faith negotiations with Republican Senator James Lankford (Okla.) and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy (Conn.). The bill reasserts control of the border, protects border communities, disrupts the flow of fentanyl into the country, and solves the border crisis by ending catch and release, strengthening our asylum system by delivering determinations efficiently and fairly, enhancing security, and improving the legal immigration system.

I am an Oklahoma born/raised age 70 year old/young retired male, been to Arizona back in January 2007 and even back then lots of people who were NOT from Mexico or USA in and around Phoenix, Arizona area. Fast forward to 2023-2024, thousands into the USA every state is dealing with homeless migrants coming from the Southern Border. Many of us in Oklahoma asked Senator James Lankford, we need something done. When we spring forward one hour March 10th, 2024 will mark the one year (2023) anniversary when a teenage homeless male attempted to break into my Norman, Oklahoma home. Norman Police Lt. Woodward knows my story, it is nothing new for thousands of American citizens, PERIOD. Mr. President (whoever) that might be DO SOMETHING NOW. Dated Friday February 9th, 2024.

Senator, thank you for the hard work on the border bill. I was a lifelong Republican until I recently left the party. I realized now that the party system is a distortion of the electoral will. As long as the two parties continue to dominate the system, we will continue our race towards the bottom. The Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for playing politics with the border that they claimed to care so much about securing. The Democrats should be ashamed of themselves forever letting it get this way in the first place. If you're still a member of the party system, help save your country: register independent. People appear to have short memories. When Trump tried to close the border before, the court stopped him. The courts also stopped title 42. Without new legislation, the situation will remain.
This bill is a long ways from perfect, but it's a damn site better than the situation we have now. But make no mistake, this is the way the two-headed monster wants it. Serving constituencies is a secondary consideration; re-election is the primary consideration.

The Senate bill is a WAY better bill than HR2 since it has consequences for those violating it. HR2 does not! I appreciate you calling out these no action Senators and Representatives. Why is the bill not supported? Why? it’s easier to not support it than walk through explaining the bill and why it’s good to their constituents. Why? because they don’t want any possibility to not be reelected. Why? If you want a job done and done correctly, follow this senator and support her. Forget whether you are Demo or Repub. I like to think that she is at the vanguard of a system that treats major issues with the alacrity that they demand. Right now, with the system as it is, major issues are addressed only after assessment by both parties of who gets the credit for newly addressed bills and whether that credit be given in a "peak" period of time.
I read the bill that they are trying to push. Basically, it does absolutely nothing to stop the flow or change anything that's happening. It is a fake bill with a lot of tricky words

Senator, I was also a long term Republican only, I now consider myself Independent. I am fiscally conservative and socially compassionate. I agree with securing the border immediately, and the President and HLS Mayorkas can do much today if they want. The laws for the border are there, but are not being enforced by HLS Mayorkas and the President. Our AZ Governor, also has tools to begin to stop illegal migration. Lastly, I am tired of wide reaching packages that include foreign aid, along with our domestic best interests. Keep up the bipartisan work! Thank You, Gregory-Yuma AZ

I was realy impressed with the passion and frankness Senator Sinema displayed while giving that speech. The whole senate chamber was silent. That proved that they were being sternly rebuked and had no answer to Sinema's questions. Their silence exposed their shame.

Thank you Kyrsten, this is the first time that I have felt someone is actually working for the citizens of Arizona. The fact that your bill may not be absolutely perfect. In my opinion. It’s still addresses majority of our issues here in Arizona. It’s a lot easier to fix 15% of things that weren’t addressed later on. Please keep fighting, it must be very frustrating to work with both sides. I’m afraid the political theater will never go away.
The details of the content of the legislation are not evaluated by her in this video. Perhaps the content of the bill was the reason that a "Bipartisan" bill was not moving forward. A bipartisan bill with bad content should not be approved.

This bill guaranteed 5,000 illegal immigrants daily. That number was based on the current facility capacities available. This bills $20,000,000,000 was to add more facilities and more agents to increase the number of illegal immigrants. The bill was to change who decides if the asylum claim is legitimate, they do not want a judge to decide asylum anymore but asylum agents. This is all just wrong in every way. Good luck with doing this in the future, it will kill America.

I'm 65 years old, a resident of Arizona, and a staunch conservative. I have never voted for a democrat in my lifetime, ever, including not voting for Sinema previously. Yet I am ashamed of the Republican Party. I will be voting for Sinema if she runs again. I will not be voting for anyone who voted against this bill or against Ukraine. It is clear that I don't have a party that I can support anymore. As an engineer, a former Army officer, and a former business owner, I too believe in getting things done. To those who say this bill is flawed, I say that, "perfect is the enemy of good." That means that perhaps the bill might have flaws, but it should have passed; then the next congress could have a chance to improve on it. I believed Ronald Reagan when he called the Soviets an "evil empire." Let's be clear: the only reason that none of this is passing is due to politics.

You are misinterpreting the bill.
It doesn't "let in 5,000 people in a day". The border is shut down after 5,000 "encounters" and encounters can be detention or immediate deportation under new rules that would've been stronger than Title 42. Catch and release...the same policy that existed during Trump's four years...would be ended. Under the new bill probably 1 in 3 migrant "encounters" would pass into the country (under tougher restrictions on asylum claims). Not only is the border shut down but it is shut down until operational stability is restored. Anyone caught trying to enter outside official ports of entry would have their asylum claims adjudicated at the border within 15 days. Not in the country over months or years.
Republicans just blew off the strongest border security bill in over 20 years. They are NEVER going to get everything they want in HR 2. It's just NOT gonna happen. A bipartisan bill is not one where you get everything and the other party gets nothing...and THAT is why this border problem has gone on for decades. Democrats didn't even make pathways to citizenship a part of the compromise and STILL republicans wouldn't vote for it. It takes 60 votes in the Senate to move a standalone immigration bill...and good luck next time you try it. Democrats are probably going to want more, with aid not on the table.
