Another great show! Thanks Ken for mentioning Green Carnations. Great band that needs more recognition. Have been a fan of Gilgamesh from their inception but am amazed that people still love their music even now. Hall of Famers no surprise and Glass Hammer is a Hall of Famer in my eyes as well. Their albums keep getting stronger even in the new heavier direction they are moving toward. Plus the fact you guys are having so much fun, makes 'In the Prog Seat' my favorite show on any channel!
My list: 1. Geinoh Yamashirogumi (World Music/Avant-prog/Psych/Awesome)(From Japan) (Third best prog band of all time) 2. Gunesh Ensemble (World Music/Jazz fusion)(From Turkmen SSR) 3. Gong (Space Rock) 4. Gryphon (Medieval Prog) 5. Guruh Gipsy (Eclectic Prog)(Indonesia) 6. Guru Guru (Kraut) 7. Gnidrolog 8. Greenslade
Gryphon is described as a medaeval folk rock band, but they went very "prog" with it on "Red Queen to Gryphon 3". I used to own their "Raindances" album on tape before I learned that it was not one of their best efforts. If you like the electric folk genres, you will probably like them. They routinely incorporated ancient instruments like the sackbut into their arrangements, so this is the real deal here. "Red Queen..." is the best that I've heard.
My current Top 3 (refraining from Genesis, Gentle Giant, David Gilmour, and Gong): 3. Gracious - "Gracious!" 2. Frank Gambale Stuart Hamm Steve Smith - "Show Me What You Can Do" 1. Glass Hammer - '"Lex Rex"
Imagine McCartney doing some prog. That would be Gracious. A band I mean. I never heard their sophomore album but the first one is kinda controversial. Introduction a fine catchy tune. Fugue in D minor lovely baroque style instrumental with harpsichord. Heaven consists of several segments that never repeats. Eclectic, yes but in no good sence I think. Hell is 'joyful' track but that... cancan? Not what I think imagining hell. The Dream perhaps one of the worst 'epics'. The guys just trying to run in all directions. Some Gentle Giant style quirkiness, some Beatles flourishes (singer Paul Davis sounds like that famous Paul). They even added some direct quotations from Beethoven's sonata! Why? It doesn't fits at all.
Guruh Gipsy! I ran across them when I was looking for rock/Asian music hybrids, and I really like that album. One track has the only crossover I’ve ever heard between prog and Javanese gamelan, and I think it’s very successful. Good stuff!
Hi All - just a quick thankyou for turning me onto Kevin Gilbert. How on earth I missed him I dont know. Living in Australia might have something to do with it lol. Difficult to get hold of his CD's. Shipping from the USA is outrageous . NRG and Thud exceptional. What a shame he left us so early. Very sad. Cheers Doug
So excluding the ones you mentioned, I have GLASS HAMMER, GONG, DAVID GILMOUR and my honorable mentions would be GANDALF'S FIST, GALLEON, GALAHAD, GREENSLADE, GAZPACHO
Here are my picks in alphabetical order: 1.-Genesis (Symphonic prog from the UK)-The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway [1974]. 2.-Godley & Creme (Art-Rock/Zolo from the UK)-L [1978] 3.-Grudom (Avant garde Black Metal from Denmark)-Dødens Likvid [2015]. A very interesting band. Think of Trout Mask Replica played in a primitive (but clear and audible) black metal style, and this is what you get. Not for everyone, but definitely worthwhile.
1. Gentle Giant - TIE: Octopus/Freehand/The Power and the Glory/In a Glass House 2. Greenslade - TIE: Greenslade/Bedside Manners Are Extra/Spyglass Guest/Time and Tide 3. Gryphon - Red Queen to Gryphon Three
Gracious' first may be one of my top 5 prog albums of all time. The second one is good too, but that first one - whew. Discovered them around '91 thanks to Repertoire's reissues, those were fun and exciting times!
No offense to anyone else, but I'm loving Ken's picks every week. I love old 70s stuff I've never heard before from before I was even born. Listening to that Gotic album now, and it is bloody great.
There’s a reason Ken is called the Professor of Prog, he knows his stuff has a great knowledge of all the juicy insiders gossip. Seriously, he’s a great guy as well.
Terrific show by the seven Scottish presenters! I had chosen my three, but I need to listen to a stack of the bands mentioned and will probably revise: Gong- all phases, Greenslade - first two albums, Gryphon - first album.
This show got me to try Gong again. Thanks to Ken for the analysis, because it does seem to be true that for a lot of people, it's a question of "is the David Allen factor going to ruin the listening experience for you or not?" And for the most part that is true, and for me, yes it does ruin the listening experience! It's really tricky to be GOOFY or WEIRD without ruining the music. It can be done, but don't look to Gong to show the way! I picked the transitional album mentioned here, Shamal, because I remembered liking that one. And it's mostly BETTER than I remember it, but EVEN IT has a goofy ass passage in it and David Allen is not on the record! If I pursue Gong at all I think it's going to have to be their fusion era. Meanwhile I've always loved Steve Hillage (guitar wizard) and will always want to hear any other music with Tim Blake (keyboard warlock) on it.
3 Gnidrolog - Lady Lake the second of two from ‘72. 2 Gryphon - Midnight Mushrumps. Medieval Prog; who’d have thought it? 1 Gracious - Gracious! An amazing debut album, part of the incredible Vertigo Swirl canon.
Again these A to Z videos are a GREAT idea and I am listening twice or more to take notes! Note: Peter Gabriel and David Gilmour SOLO were never really prog rock, but worth mentioning since so many prog fans like their solo work.
Staying within the rules, these are my picks for G: The HALL OF FAME BANDS: *Genesis *Gentle Giant *Peter Gabriel Now the other top 3: 1. Kevin Gilbert/Giraffe 2. Gracious 3. Michael Garrison Honorable Mentions: I Gigante Grobbschnitt Gamalon Garybaldi Greenslade Gnidrolog Gryphon Gabriel Bondage Goblin Manuel Gottsching Gravy Train Jerry Goodman Phillip Glass Go!(Now is this considered Stomu Yamashta's Go or just Go? I've seen it both ways) - Live in Paris I was going to put Golden Earring on here but I don't think they did any Prog albums that I can remember.
Hooray for Chuck! You just made my day with Godley & Creme’s Consequences! A magnificent, most amazing and unknown album! I have all versions of it (LP, CD & Cassette), it’s incredible! Certainly by now someone has corrected you guys with Peter Cook (not Cleese), but kudos to you man, I love your musical taste! Cheers!
I might even like their combo L/Freeze Frame more...The collection Frabjous Days: The Secret World Of Godley & Creme 1967-1969 has some very interesting stuff on it
My picks for G and to follow the exceptions: Gilgamesh - Arriving Twice (would have been in my original Top 3 as well) Phillip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi/Glassworks Guru Guru - Main und Friends (prefer this and Hey Du period over the earlier albums) HM: Jan Garbarek - Triptykon Gateway
Lucky enough to see, Gong touring the Shamal album at Reading Festival also saw the original line up of Gryphon at Leeds University Pete and Steven you are pronouncing Greenslade correctly.
I cant deny Gong! I love all their early records. I saw them live. they've been a fav for a long time. also: I'll second Grobbschnitt, and Godley & Creme. I'll add Giles, Giles & Fripp (Robert Fripp's pre-Crimson band); Guru Guru (Krautrock with a humorous improv feel).
Big letter but not the biggest so far (for me anyway)...Does have THE best ever prog band of course/Genesis. I would've said put those 'Big Three' in a kind of 'permanent HOF' of prog instead of disqualifying/excluding them but I guess it's the same effect in the end - excluded from the discussion...
My 3 would be : Gnidrolog - ...In Spite of Harry's Toe-Nail or Lady Lake, either one is great. Original English proto-prog. Gracious - Again, their 2 albums are great. Another great English proto-prog with good keyboards. Gowen, Miller, Sinclair, Tomkins - Before A Word Is Said. Great and not mentioned enough Canterbury album. The last one before Alan Gowen died. Very good.
@@МаксРогозин-е1ю I really like Clear Air Turbulence a lot ("Angel Manchenio" is on my list of all time fave tracks). Excellent band with Ray Fenwick on guitars & Mark Nauseef on drums
My favorite prog G bands are Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Gentle Giant - Octopus, Goblin - Roller. Honorable mentions: Peter Gabriel - Face Melt album, Gong, Greenslade, Grobschnitt, Gryphon, Garybaldi, Ghost Rhythms, Gotic and Guranfoe and Philip Glass.
G= Great nice show gents love the choices - Steven agree on Gazpacho - dig deep on six of their albums Here are mine excluding the three obvious 1. God is An Astronaut - phenomenal post rock prog atmospheric band from Ireland 2. Gazpacho great band from Norway 3. Gypsy - great prog from Minnesota - debut double album is lost classic twin guitars , mellotron, long jams Honorable mentions 4. Gravy Train 5. Gracious 6. Grateful Dead 7. Gandalf's Fist 8. Golden Earing
Hello from the UK 🇬🇧. Great show again Pete. For me Gong and Genesis are cast in stone but my 3rd choice would be Gordon Giltrap a very underrated musician. 🤘🤘🤘
The Shaming Of The True & Toy Matinee Acoustic (not to mention the great s/t TM album) are really really good. Another guy deserving of A LOT more attention is Marc Bonilla
1.Gong-You (us vinyl, different cover and I prefer it over the uk.) 2.Godley/Creme-L 3.Group 87 HM: Gandalf-Tales Of A Long Forgotten Kingdom Grobschnitt-Jumbo Gabriel Bondage Gryphon Ghost Of A Sabertooth Tiger-Midnight Sun The Group(Finnish Fusion) Gamelon
HoF: Gentle Giant - 2nd all time fave band (all great bar Giant for a Day) Genesis - 70s & 80s albums Gong - like most, especially Camembert, I See You, 70s Moerlen albums & Shamal (fave = Allen era, especially Teapot trilogy) Goblin - most, especially 70s releases Next top 3: 1.Gojira - all, especially 'Mars' to Fortitude 2.Gordion Knot - both, fave: self-titled 3.Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes HMs: Gorguts Ghosts and Vodka Good Tiger Guru Guru Guapo Gnidrolog Gilgamesh Gilbert, Kevin Grails Go Go Penguin Gathering, The Gorczyca, Andrew Glass Hammer Guranfoe Gorod Gorczyca, Andrew
Gentle Giant were phenomenal live band. On stage they had that raw rock energy a thing that not always evident on the studio albums. Advent of Panurge, Proclamation, On Reflection I prefer these songs live.
Anyone heard or The Mike Greene band? mid 70s rock/jazz/fusion band from Georgia. Found 2 on vinyl at used record store foror 2 bucks each. Really good.
I have their Pale, Pale Moon album (1975), very good & jazzy. Maybe a little too laid back for some but I like it - a lot. Also not exactly Southern Rock but I get some ARS-type vibes from some of the music. Very good vocals too, the tunes are melodic/catchy with some tasty guitar work. I need to get Midnight Mirage...I think he did several later albums just under "Mike Greene" that are a mixed bag (some good individual tracks), not nearly as good or consistent as that mid 70's stuff. Some of it's almost 'yacht rock', some is flat-out jazz (Escape From The Woodshed), you've got ballads but also more rock-oriented numbers. All of it retains that jazz vibe though. Then the better tracks that sound more like Pale Pale Moon. Music that overall is really hard to categorize...I also think he's got a 10 cd box set (which I don't have). A lot of it's on Bandcamp...
1 Gong (all eras) 2 Gnidrolog 3 Gryphon 4 Grobschnitt 5 Group 1850 6 Gracious 7 Goblin 8 Green Carnation 9 Godspeed you! Weeks later I have G's to report back on. Goblin's Roller has been on my wish list for years and I already knew Gotic's Escenes album was a winner thanks to Ken's recommendation earlier. But I found he was also right about Grobschnitt's Solar Music LIve, it's really good when the band isn't goofing off! Same can be said with Guru Guru's Hinten, it has a little down time here and there but it's otherwise excellent. Then you have bands like Greenslade where the music is good but the vocals ruin it, versus Galactic Cowboys where I instantly liked the singer but have not connected with the music. A real mixed bag here with the G's! I am holding off on Kevin Gilbert until I explore his band Toy Matinee a little further.
CHUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to shout-out the Cowboys!!! Love me some GC dude. They're right up there with King's X for most overlooked band, IMO. And "Space" is my favorite from them.
Gong, Gordian Knot, Garybaldi. Honorables: Gila, Grovjobb, Gracious, Gilgamesh, Group 1850, Ghost (Japan), Michael Garrison, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sergius Golowin, Manuel Gottsching. Ken, I cannot believe you forgot Garybaldi and Sergius Golowin. ;)
Obvious Hall of Fame candidates and several other great ones, most of which you mentioned. I know that there's not a lot of love for post-rock here but it's definitely a branch of Prog as far as I'm concerned, so GodSpeed You! Black Emperor should be here. Glad to see Kevin Gilbert lauded - we had seen the best days of most dead rock stars but Kevin's were probably still to come. Gong would comfortably fill my third spot.
Gerard (from Japan), by a long shot... (will anyone ever be able to locate their DVDs?)...after that, Gordian Knot and Glass Hammer are the only G's I own. That's right, I never cared much for Genesis...
I initially had Gerard on my honorable mentions list. I revisited them and they just didn't hold up for me. Sounded very dated. Nice keyboard work but thats all. I don't think I would listen to them again so I actually took them out of my collection and put them up for sale on my Discogs page. Everyone likes something different.
@@kengolden666 On Gerard's 2000 album The Ruins Of A Glass Fortress (on Musea). At least that's what my digital (mp3) music file says...Looks like there's a 1975 album Hiroki Tamaki - Time Paradox that has a track on it called "Time Paradox" but it's only 1.5 minutes long & not the one I have - mine's 5+ minutes

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: instrumental post-rock from Montreal. They sounds like a cross between Ash Ra Tempel, Heresie, and late 90s indie rock.
👍
My list:
1. Geinoh Yamashirogumi (World Music/Avant-prog/Psych/Awesome)(From Japan) (Third best prog band of all time)
2. Gunesh Ensemble (World Music/Jazz fusion)(From Turkmen SSR)
3. Gong (Space Rock)
4. Gryphon (Medieval Prog)
5. Guruh Gipsy (Eclectic Prog)(Indonesia)
6. Guru Guru (Kraut)
7. Gnidrolog
8. Greenslade
Wow! Interesting list! Have to check some of those, specially Geinoh Yamashirogumi 👀
Red Queen is easily their best to my ears
If I'm excluding Genesis and Gentle Giant:
1. Gryphon- Red Queen to Gryphon Three
2. Gnidrolog- Lady Lake
3. Gong- Angel's Egg
My current Top 3 (refraining from Genesis, Gentle Giant, David Gilmour, and Gong):
3. Gracious - "Gracious!"
2. Frank Gambale Stuart Hamm Steve Smith - "Show Me What You Can Do"
Very sad. Cheers Doug
So excluding the ones you mentioned,
I have GLASS HAMMER, GONG, DAVID GILMOUR and my honorable mentions would be GANDALF'S FIST, GALLEON, GALAHAD, GREENSLADE, GAZPACHO
Here are my picks in alphabetical order:
1.-Genesis (Symphonic prog from the UK)-The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway [1974].
2.-Godley & Creme (Art-Rock/Zolo from the UK)-L [1978]
3.-Grudom (Avant garde Black Metal from Denmark)-Dødens Likvid [2015]. A very interesting band. Think of Trout Mask Replica played in a primitive (but clear and audible) black metal style, and this is what you get. Not for everyone, but definitely worthwhile.
The Lamb is killer!
@@bertkarlsson1421 Yes it is, my friend 😉👍
My nipples practically exploded with delight when Ken gave Green Carnation an honourable mention. Leaves Of Yesteryear is a fantastic album 👍🏻
Exploding nipples can be a sign of a serious medical condition. Please consult your physician.
The comedian Peter Cook is on the Godley & Creme “Consequences” not John Cleese, just wanted to clarify that.
Been a long time since I spun it.
@@lasercd7851 honest mistake, though to be fair, he did perform together with Cleese and Monty Python a few times.

@@sspbrazil At Amnesty International (he did EL Whisty with John Cleese - Interesting fact)

1. Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
2. Peter Gabriel - So
3. Gentle Giant - In A Glass House
1. Genesis
2. Gentle Giant
3. David Gilmour
4. Peter Gabriel
5. GTR
It would be cool to see a show on you guys each putting a prog beginners pack of maybe ten cd's covering different sides of Prog.
1. Gentle Giant - TIE: Octopus/Freehand/The Power and the Glory/In a Glass House
2. Greenslade - TIE: Greenslade/Bedside Manners Are Extra/Spyglass Guest/Time and Tide
Thanks! Keep watching. More to come.
@@chuckazeee How much do now I owe you? 😉

Thanks bib!
Terrific show by the seven Scottish presenters! I had chosen my three, but I need to listen to a stack of the bands mentioned and will probably revise: Gong- all phases, Greenslade - first two albums, Gryphon - first album.
Gryphon first album a pure English medieval music. Not a prog rock record.
@@МаксРогозин-е1ю yes you’re correct - I meant the second album , cheers.
I always enjoy that Gong discussion because the Teapot Trilogy has been the starting ground for any Prog stuff with me.
Stevens pick are awesome I can understand him fine
First The Power of Zeus and now Guruh Gipsy. Ken, you're killing me🤣🤣🤣
Like what I'm hearing so far on YT.
Staying within the rules, these are my picks for G:
The HALL OF FAME BANDS:
*Genesis
*Gentle Giant
*Peter Gabriel
Now the other top 3:
1. Kevin Gilbert/Giraffe
2. Gracious
3. Michael Garrison
Honorable Mentions:

Gnidrolog
Gryphon
Gabriel Bondage
Goblin
Manuel Gottsching
Gravy Train
Jerry Goodman
Phillip Glass
Go!(Now is this considered Stomu Yamashta's Go or just Go? I've seen it both ways) - Live in Paris
I was going to put Golden Earring on here but I don't think they did any Prog albums that I can remember.
Jerry Goodman's a good pick, his solo It's Alive & On The Future Of Aviation are excellent. Also his team-up with Jan Hammer on Like Children
Peter Cook is on Consequences (I don't think John Cleese is on there)
Fun fact: Galactic Cowboys has a song called Sea of Tranquility
Hooray for Chuck! You just made my day with Godley & Creme’s Consequences! A magnificent, most amazing and unknown album! I have all versions of it (LP, CD & Cassette), it’s incredible! Certainly by now someone has corrected you guys with Peter Cook (not Cleese), but kudos to you man, I love your musical taste! Cheers!
I might even like their combo L/Freeze Frame more...The collection Frabjous Days: The Secret World Of Godley & Creme 1967-1969 has some very interesting stuff on it
It was Peter Cook who wrote the dialogue and did voice acting on Consequevces, not John Cleese.
Gryphon ; Gong ; Giles, Giles & Fripp (Gentle Giant ; Genesis : automatic choices)
Mine staying within the exception rules:
1. Gong - “You”
2. Gryphon - “Red Queen To Gryphon”
3. Grobschnitt - “Solar Music Live”
Good choices! Gryphon’s Red Queen is fantastic! 👌👌👍👍
@@Ferion333 thanks man.
Kevin Gilbert was a musical genius.
Yes he was!!
Took tons of notes as always. Also, very good call disqualifying Genesis, Gentle Giant, and Peter Gabriel. 🤣
My picks for G and to follow the exceptions:
Gilgamesh - Arriving Twice (would have been in my original Top 3 as well)
Phillip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi/Glassworks
Guru Guru - Main und Friends (prefer this and Hey Du period over the earlier albums)
HM:
Jan Garbarek - Triptykon

Garaj Mahal right off the top! Seen ‘em many times. Took lessons with Kai. Great pick. Looking forward to someone talking about Giant Squid!
Glad you liked the nod to Garaj Mahal
Lucky enough to see, Gong touring the Shamal album at Reading Festival also saw the original line up of Gryphon at Leeds University Pete and Steven you are pronouncing Greenslade correctly.
Luis thank you for expanding on Kevin Gilbert
I cant deny Gong! I love all their early records. I saw them live. they've been a fav for a long time.
also:
I'll second Grobbschnitt, and Godley & Creme. I'll add Giles, Giles & Fripp (Robert Fripp's pre-Crimson band); Guru Guru (Krautrock with a humorous improv feel).
Golden Earring(69-77),Gentle Giant,Genesis
Hi everyone Steven took my picks as well it great that they are talk about
G is where things get serious
Big letter but not the biggest so far (for me anyway)...Does have THE best ever prog band of course/Genesis. I would've said put those 'Big Three' in a kind of 'permanent HOF' of prog instead of disqualifying/excluding them but I guess it's the same effect in the end - excluded from the discussion...
My 3 would be :
Gnidrolog - ...In Spite of Harry's Toe-Nail or Lady Lake, either one is great.
Very good.
1. Gojira
2. Golden Earring
3. Gillan
HM: Gazpacho, Guru Guru, Gorguts, Gong, Goblin, Gryphon
Most of your bands aren't prog. Love Gojira, Gillan and Gorguts, prog or not!
Not Gillan. Ian Gillan Band instead. A jazz rock band. I know that guy from Deep Purple wasn't happy and changed his style.

Mort Garson, Goblin, Jerry Goldsmith, Janez Gregorc
Great shout from Luis - not a 'G' band but Amorphous Androgynous is excellent stuff.
Also - GO (Stomu Yamashta) maybe should get a mention.
Hello from the UK 🇬🇧. Great show again Pete. For me Gong and Genesis are cast in stone but my 3rd choice would be Gordon Giltrap a very underrated musician. 🤘🤘🤘

Gentle Giant were phenomenal live band. On stage they had that raw rock energy a thing that not always evident on the studio albums. Advent of Panurge, Proclamation, On Reflection I prefer these songs live.
They are one of the greats for sure
And when will be K they'll exclude King Crimson and Kansas? Or even Kayak?
likely not Kayak...not really a big band.
Sorry Ive just gotten back to you. Midnight mirage is great too. Mercury release. But I prefer the first. The second 1 is awesome too.

Gerard (from Japan), by a long shot... (will anyone ever be able to locate their DVDs?)...after that, Gordian Knot and Glass Hammer are the only G's I own. That's right, I never cared much for Genesis...
