I have to disagree with you that we live here because we lack a way out. All are not trapped, including me. Your path, lifestyle, choices, and income, morals, values, etc. drive a lot of the outcomes here. Using prudence and common sense was not exercised in this scenario. The consequence says it all. Our city is the largest in the Midsouth United States. We are metropolitan. Therefore, we have enough rough, middle-class, and affluent neighbors to where not all of us feel unsafe. This is the hometown of many celebrities who come back to visit and others follow. We have a rich culture in music, the arts, nature, history, and successful Blacks too. They don't talk about this in the news much. You have to be here to know what really happens here that is good and "normal." They instead show "ninjas," like the felon killing Ms. Plummer, and his goons posing as fathers. I don't walk our streets in fear, but I exercise caution because of the times globally-- just as I did when on business in Philly last month, during which time someone was robbed at knife point and I was warned not to ride the L. We are not the worst city, beautiful Nina whose shows I love. You just watched on the news the area that generally has the crime. It is usually isolated. This is not wide-spread, even though crime can happen anywhere, anytime. I felt far more unsafe when in Baltimore and living in metro DC-- where they are doing unheard of ish in broad daylight. I was surprised. I have a way out, and clearly could leave again. However, I do not feel I have to given that us locals know there is more to Memphis than the crime reported in the media. It is unfortunate that's all people believe about us. I would live here before Detroit and some other places. I invite you to come visit, actually.
