THE OLD BOOKS MARKET IN ABIDS IS WHERE THE WORLD COMES TOGETHER | HYDERABAD | SECOND HAND BOOKS
‘Mannn!’, said our co-anchor Anmona Chaliha as soon as she stepped out of the auto-rickshaw and set foot into the old books market at Abids, Hyderabad. Well, you would too. There just can’t be another expression for it. So much knowledge, stories, experiences, observations, theories, practices and an endless list of amazing things in one place. All packed in old books from all over the world. Some are disposed of by schools and libraries, some are just given away by customers themselves, and some are collected from really random places. The collection will just drive you insane. These are books you wouldn’t find in the big book malls.
Most of the super warm and friendly booksellers there do this as a side hustle on Sundays. Yeah, it’s a Sunday market, set up outside closed shop shutters. The brands take a break and the books come to the hustle. Name a language, you have it. Name a subject, you have it. Name a writer, you have it. Name a genre, you have it. Stalls and stalls, tables and tables, floors mats and floor mats of incredible books.
Don’t really know how old the market is, but the sellers gave us an impression that it’s over 6 decades old for sure. And honestly, there’s a whole universe out there. You’ll go mad picking a book for yourself. Met so many amazing book worms who frequent the market almost every two months and buy like a dozen books.
Walk around for an hour, and you literally spot a book on every damn thing out there. Fancy ones, big ones, tiny ones, fun ones, serious ones, and there really is no end to it. If you are in Hyderabad, drop by the next Sunday and pick yourself a bundle of stories. Better than those reels that make no sense. And so much cheaper than the books in big shops. You can bargain too, but please, try not to. It’s reasonable already.
    Thanks for watching..!!!

thank you so much for bringing back memories of old / secondhand books for me. Every city and town in India has such markets or even streets where books can be found cheaper than arcades . Delhi - Nai Sarak at Chandi Chowk, Mumbai - Fort area, Pune also has one. Everyone can tell the name of the market in their city in the comments below !!!
