I've had my 830 for more than 1 year now and really pleased with it. Definite upgrade from old Edge 1000. Especially like the loooong battery life. I also rate the Garmin Varia rear light / radar which I pair with the 830. Never leave home without it.
just ordered ! the review gave me the information needed to make a decision after days of looking at different units. My old edge 1000 now only lasting max 4 hours with most connections disabled... looking forward to the long battery run time..
I agree that it is a well designed object that is a joy to use when everything goes according to plan. In other less ideal circumstances, the navigation simply drives me nuts. The unit constantly decides that the correct route is one that is passing nearby in parallel from the route I traced in Komoot. It also sometimes sees mini loops in the route and tries to send me into U-Turns. It’s not just my unit, a friend who uses Ride With GPS routes on a 530 has the same issues. So, it spends most of the ride telling me to turn or U-turn. This is where the unit automatically switching from the dashboard to the map when a turn is approaching goes from being a cool feature to being a pain as I have to fight with it to get to the data I want to see. When I deviate from the planned route, it calculates new routes that seldom make any sense. Sometimes, it is so busy calculating new routes and trying to tell me where to go that it takes minutes to realise that we are back on the originally planned route. This navigation is the perfect example of trying to do too much and failing miserably.
I was considering purchasing this particular model. Could you please tell me if the data output also includes calories burned durning cycling? Thanks in advance 🤗🇨🇦👏🏻
I would rather see a tutorial on how to use the map and routes and how it interfaces with a smartphone app. I have been trying for hours my new one, and I am getting nowhere.
Good review. Key Msg to Garmin is that whilst the training effect is really nice touch, they need to find a way for it to work across all feeds eg Zwift and other Garmin devices.
They can't right now, the training effect engine is not theirs and can only be installed on the device, I have my garmin paired with my Turbo Trainer when running zwift to record power and HR so it calculates the effect, it isn't really any hassle to to that.
hi. the garmin segments don't work for me during course ride. I m talking about segments created on garmin connect,. when i ride without a course i see the segments. why is that ?
Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830. Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx
Is the battery of Garmin Edge 830 replaceable? If so, then from where should I buy the battery, what should be the specification of the replacement battery and how do I replace the existing battery ?
Must confess to being really disappointed with the 830. I spent more time with it not pairing to the phone that it did pairing and losing the GPS signal every time I went under some trees. Switched to the Roam and no problems. Garmin software is not very user friendly.
if you were listening carefully he mentioned different gps signal settings depending on where you ride. if you ride in open back country gps, forested or built up areas use the other options under gps + settings.
Settings Settings I have done that also. Worked fine except when under an arch of trees and since 8km of a 38km ride was under trees (not in all one stretch) it made a big difference to the recorded mileage etc.
Very good review, Thank you! If i may ask, if the price is the same for both, do you think 830 is still a better GPS computer then the 1030 (which is 3 years old now)?
Well, I still can’t understand how the configuration process and phone app for such a great device is so, so, so bad. I’ve got a Wahoo Bolt and a Garmin 830. The main reason I still use my Wahoo (besides I love it) is the headache for the frequent failures in sync and the pain in the ass that is to configure or change settings on the device through the app. All is so easy on my Wahoo. Otherwise the device is absolutely great. I’ve got same problem with my beloved watch (Garmin Phoenix 6) compared to my previous (Suunto). Why, Garmin, why?
Garmin Connect the app and Garmin Connect the website may seem a bit clunky compared to newer rivals, because both are older and embedded with older legacy approaches. They need a wholistic rethink and maybe make one version for serious training racers and another for tourist.
Just got one and it won't pair with a pixel 6 using Android 13. It pairs with my old pixel 3 (which no longer has my sim card, so not so useful to me).
I have a question about the 830 memory ... I believe it is 16 GB. Is that enough? Also, can the memory be expanded as it can in the 1030 and 1030 Plus?
I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 830 - first purchase of a Garmin product. My display seems blur, in particular the the large text/characters in the main menu with white background. Annoying, a bit uncomfortable but not dramatic. I don't know if this is a defect or if I am used to better screen in general (i.e. iPhone). Are you experiencing the same? Thanks. John
The Edge 820 is, hands down, the worst piece of technology I've ever owned. I'm very, very hesitant to buy another Garmin. When the Edge 820 came out, there were plenty of reasonable reviews. I'm worried the 830 is going the same way. The touchscreen performance to me looks absolutely awful still, despite what you say.
After some time I also started hating my 820, after about 3 years the battery only lasted about 4 hours without any backlight. And it was also really slow, navigation was pretty much useless. Last year I switched to a Wahoo Elemnt Roam and I couldn't be happier.
For buying any garmin device you should wait for year/year and a half so they can clear up all bugs. Then, you have very good device. I have 520 edge, now 3 years old, almost 100% reliable
I finally said goodbye to Garmin and went Bolt. What a relief! Wahoo just works! Had so much trouble with the garmin software and the touchscreen. Never again Garmin.
I have a Garmin Fenix 6x sapphire watch that I use for all my bike rides. I'd love to see a display on my bike while riding instead of looking at my wrist, would you recommend this Garmin for that or another model?
Finally, Garmin should realize that the selection of metric vs. imperial should not be per installation of Garmin Connect app, but rather per activity type. This is for those who run with a Garmin watch and ride with an Edge computer. I still understand running in miles and minutes/mile pace and cycling in km because it’s a European sport.
Only just took it out of the box the other day, did setup etc. setup was easy , but that is probably a function of Garmin upgrading their software. The 830 feels nice in hand.
